An interesting psychological analysis on Dan and Blair (and Chuck and Blair)

    This was really interesting to read, specifically because I like analysing the characters. I think people don't actually give the writers enough credit for these unique characters that they have constructed. All characters on Gossip Girl are never before seen to TV, specifically Dan and Chuck because I feel like they are part of the modern New York landscape. An indie-emo writer from Brooklyn and a playboy-businessman from the UES. I won't actually give this credit to the author of GG because her characters (although a good basis) don't contain the striking complexities that the writers have created. I've always felt that Dan and Chuck were probably at birth the same kind of guy. But their family environment and how they grew up shaped who they were and placed them on opposite ends of the world. I dislike when Nate and Dan get compared because honestly they aren't actually polar opposites. Dan and Chuck are the polar opposites in that regard. As the show has progressed, Chuck has moved closer to the "Dan" lifestyle in the sense that he has acquired more family, developed a moral code and learned to love. Dan is slowly being acquainted with the "Chuck" lifestyle because he is less judgmental, less afraid to do some dark things and is actually losing a lot of relationships. I really enjoyed seeing them become friends in season 5. It was like they had met each other at a crossroad or something, with Chuck helping Dan to become a risk-taker and Dan helping Chuck to embrace good feelings and got him the loyal Monkey.

    Perhaps many people can't help but side with Chuck and Blair as characters over Serena, Dan and Nate because they acknowledged and appreciated their evil side from the beginning, but are now trying to mature. I just think they're the ones that have had to take the biggest steps to grow up over the other characters, and they get admired for it. Serena and Nate progress a little and regress a little and people just roll their eyes at their behaviour. Dan is unlucky because he's supposed to be the utmost good guy whose opinions are the voice of reason, but any moral transgression he makes (no matter how entertaining or interesting) gets him labeled as a judgmental hypocrite.

    Dan: Likes to see the good, but can't help but see the truth. Blair: Claims to enjoy seeing the bitter truth, but actually sees things in a movie in her head. Chuck: Likes to see the evil, but also appreciates the powers of love, loyalty, bravery and fate. Nate: Likes to see the good in people and only sees good in most people. Serena: Likes to see the good in people and actually brings out the good in people.
