Can I just say what bothers me for some reason? The fact that they are making Dan a d-bag by writing a book and burning all bridges....but hasn't Gossip Girl already uncovered all secrets of the UES? Isn't this the premise of the whole show?
Absolutely First Aid Kit, these contradictions are in my opinion the other main characteristic of the show. What I also find “interesting” or indicative is that certain people are enjoying the current direction of the show despite the major contradictions that are necessary to give us this direction. I think that these writers also write Mitt Romney’s speeches.

@pennfan: Oh no, I agree. Actors in indian dramas have to work very hard. Its not them I have a problem with. They're very hard-working, and some are amazingly talented (i.e.: my fav Drashi Dhami :D I swear I would go lesbian for that girl lol TMI?) But yeah, its the writers, producers, and networks I have a problem with, and their insistence that average indian audience doesn't appreciate good writing.

There is no character development to speak of, and even the more progressive of the shows have a very regressive thinking. Its strange but I really like Pratigya when it first started. It was crazy and backwards as hell, but for a reason. The oppression of women wasn't shown as something that just is, it was shown as something wrong. Then you have shows like Kya Hua Tera Vaada, which makes absolutely no sense. When someone tells me that KYTV is more progressive than Pratigya I tell them to shut the fuck up. Seriously lol. There seems to be a running formula on daytime tv right now. To make your show seem "modern" the family must (1) have a flat (2) be living without extendend family (3) have dress in jeans and tunics, and (4) speak a lot of English.
Who says the English language is a mark of progression? Of intelligence? I hate how its supposed to wow the audience. I would rather they speak good hindi (and not hinglish). Have stories about Indian princesses and maids instead of Cinderella and Belle (from Beauty and the Beast). Talk about famous Indian authors and playwrites instead of Tolstoy and the like.
Basically what I'm trying to say is I don't think the people making the shows understand the criticisms they recieve. People complain about Indian shows lacking equality and being regressive, and in response the writers have the girls wear jeans and live without their mother-in-laws underfoot. Writiers and networks see all the criticism as an issue of appearance. They alter all the surrounding trappings of a story instead of the story itself.We didn't need them to stop wearing suits. We need them to start writing stories about girls we stand up for themselves, and mothers who stand up for the women their sons fall in love with. By telling the same story over and over again, and refusing to acknowledge the wider audience (i.e.: everyone who isn't a middle-aged housewife), they really loose out on making great tv. Instead they get ratings. Its a business for most people involved in indian television. Its not about the love of making good tv. I think its probably because for the longest time we've had a few people monopolizing the whole industry. This is slowly changing (i.e.: Four Lions) but slowly.
To sum up, I just really really dislike the writing. Sometimes it feels like they have no respect for audience's intelligence. They assume we're all idiots who can't tell when we're being fed complete crap. There's so much concern for wardrobe and packaging, but the actual stories tend to really fall short.
PS: Did I mention how much I loved Geet? Did you ever watch it? The lead pair were just something else. So much talent. And the writing was for once, so on point, and very very good.

Random observation. I was just standing outside a lecture hall, and managed to overhear two girls talking about GG. One of them had watched the show (Person A), and the other (Person B) had just finished the fourth season.
Person B had been spoiled about a certain car accident that was to occur in the fifth season. "Oh no" said Person A. They basically had a conversation about how it really became boring mid season 4 but became much better near the end. And that the upcoming car accident was quite a dramantic and nerve wracking thing.

We wondered why the writers insist on CB. This is your answer. There are people watching this show that are amazed and really in awe of the awesomeness that is Chuck and Blair's (ill)fated romance.

I hve to agree with everything you're saying. Even shows which started to show maladies of child marriage, female infanticide somehow ended up celebrating those things. Another problem I hve with indian shows is they mostly potray successful independent women as vampish who are after other women's husbands. As for geet I didn't really watch it. I don't watch much TV but have just started watching Madhubala coz of my mom. Although I think drishti and vivian are doing a good job and look good together.Posted 10/30/2012 6:16:46 AM #

Yeah, beleive it or not though, I actually really liked Twilight. The first book and movie wasn't bad. SM really screwed it up though by writing another 3. She had a great story and then just stretched it on and meandered on until things came to a very very uneventful conclusion.
The first book worked great for Bella, but as the story streched on, it seemed more and more as a foil to explore SM's desire to be trapped in a 3way.
What started as a first person story, strictly from Bella's view flitted (for a few pages and then 50 page chunks) to surrounding characters. It had without a doubt became Jacob's story by the start of the 3rd book. SM should've just cut off Twilight and written a story for Jacob. It was almost like she had no direction in mind though. She just wrote without any idea of where she was going, and ended up with something that seemed just horrible because she put hardly an thought into what she hoped to acheive. And then instead of going back and editing, they published that disorganized stuff. Good writing is one thing. Atleast have good characters or even a good story to support it. Tha last 3 books had none of the above.
Btw did anyone know that 50 Shades of Grey was originally Twilight fanfic?? Hate people who claim to know what BDSM is about, but end up writing really emotionally abusive stories. There are much much much better and more deserving authors.

Haha charishma. I think I don't find vampires fascinating at all and thus can't be invested in stories involving them although I do watch tvd and true blood but that's only n only because of good looking guys on those shows. I used to think ian somerhalder and eric from true blood really hot. I really think that penn badgley is really hot no matter what he wears and how he cuts his hair.Posted 10/30/2012 11:38:14 AM #
