that Vanessa was African American?? I just thought she had a tan-ish complexion, if the homepage didn't mention that she was black or half black or whatever, I would have never have guessed it. And be honest guys, if you didn't just look on Jessica's wikipedia page, would you have noticed this?? And plus, what are your thoughts on the casting of her mom? Was it a good one and\or who would you have chosen instead??

jessica is half-african american yes i knew that, you can tell by her complexion and facial features.
but 'vanessa' ( which threw me off when i read your post ) in one of the previous gossip girl episodes that just re- aired, her heritage was alluded to as 'native american'.

Jessica's supposedly part Arican-American part Hungarian or something...in other words she's sorta like Esmeralda from Disney's "Hunch Back of Notre Dame"
(Funny enough, ethincally in part, both Jessica Szohr and Sebastian Stan are partially Eastern European because Seb's Romanian, or something.)

And about Seb. I knew he was Romanian, oddly enough and no one really had to tell me, idk why I knew that but by looking at him I could just tell. The word "Romanian" flashed in my head :-P

Yeah I know, I used to think so too, until I asked a question on anoher messageboard and found out she was partially black. And about Seb. That being said, hopefully Seb wasn't one of the Romanian orphans profiled by 20/20 nearly 20 yrs ago! That'd be so sad!

Probably not, but if he sticks w/Leighton I could imagine them adopting a Romanian orphan someday themselves someday.

but i also remember what was referenced on the show and i am pretty sure in the magnificent archibalds episode where dan asked what her thanksgiving holiday plans were she mentioned that her family had plans to stage a protest on some reservation and how she planned to pass that and stay holed up at her place.
thanksgiving + reservations = i pretty much drew my own conclusion that the heritage they were going with for her at the time was clearly native american
(to which i am offended to even type that)
i get that her mom casted is black. i obviously can't explain that, other than its not the first time the writers have decided to mess up character history (see chuck bass and his mom mention in season one) lmao

I could always tell by her hair, it's got the African-American texture. I may hate Vanessa, but Jessica is so fricken beautiful.

Well Vanessa, for the purposes of the show atleast, could still be part Native-American. So many Americans are. More than you'd think. She could even be African/Native American/Hispanic all at the same time. Gina Torres, the actress cast as Vanessa's mom is Cuban.

On a side note, Breanna Garcia who was cast as Bree Buckley is also Spanish/Cuban, though she doesn't look very exotic to me but her wikipedia bio say she speaks fluent Spanish and teaches ESL when she's not acting. Interesting, I thought.
