Word on the street is that Taylor Momsen has just been cast as the role of Katniss in "The Hunger Games" which is set to begin filming in July. Lionsgate announced yesterday in an official press release that Gossip Girl's Taylor Momsen has been slated to star as Katniss Everdeen, the female teenage protagonist in the 2011 flick "The Hunger Games", a film based on the dystopian YA novel by Suzanne Collins. "The Hunger Games" tells the story of 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a nation born of the ruins of North America called Panem, where the harsh government called The Capitol randomly selects one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts to participate in a fight to the death in a televised competition. As fans of the Hunger Games series will be quick to point out, Katniss Everdeen is described as olive-skinned with black hair and gray eyes and Momsen is well, quite frankly the opposite. Momsen doesn't seem to think that this serves as any obstacle. When asked about the obvious differences in her physical appearance, she replied, "I guess I'll have to wear contacts and dye my hair black. Whatever, I bleach my hair all of the time for Gossip Girl, so it's not a big deal." Momsen also stated that although she had not had the chance to read any of the books in the series, she's very excited to take on a role that will distinguish her from Brooklyn-hipster-turned-Manhattan-socialite Jenny Humphrey. Now that the role of Katniss has been cast, the next big question on our minds is who will play Peeta, Katniss' love interest and partner in the games. We asked Momsen for her opinion. "Chace [Crawford], for sure. He's like, a big brother to me, so it would be great if he co-starred. We have real chemistry. As for Katniss' other best friend, I've always wanted to work with Adam Brody, so I'd say him. I know both of these guys are in their twenties, but so is Robert Pattinson and he's supposed to be 17 in Twilight. Anything is possible with the right amount of make-up."

The film, which begins production July 2010, has yet to announce a director, but Collins herself will be adapting the script, while Nina Jacobson will produce. The Hunger Games is scheduled for a 2011 release. (TBH, I haven't read any of these books, nor even HEARD of them for that matter until now, nor do I plan to read them anytime soon, but I'm happy for Taylor I guess.) Any thoughts??

Wow, the books sounds like trash and so does the movie.

    Congrats, Taylor!

The Hunger Games is a really, really good book. A lot of people at my school have read it and loved it. It's not trash. /:

But it's probably not true. If it is, congrats to her. (: It'll be nice to see her in a movie role.

    Intelesting. Veddy veddy intelesting. XD

Stella, the books are actually fantastic. I'd recommend 'em to anyone in a heartbeat. Seriously, they're FAB. I don't see TMoms as terribly fitting for the role, tho. I think her attitude clashes with it, if that makes any sense. She's all rebel-without-a-cause and smoking and hooker tights...but whatevs, I'd give her a chance. I'll be curious to see if this is true.

I'm thinking this is an April Fool.  A slightly odd one, but a prank nontheless.

    Yes these books are fantastic!

So I can't wait for movie, but I can't decide wheter it's good thing that Taylor got this role wheter it's bad.

Bigger part of me says that it's a bad, bad idea to cast Taylor, but maybe I should give her a chance to show that she's better than I think.

And as Peace/Love/GG  I'm curious too see if it's true.
