Who's to Blame? Nate or Chace?
-
It has come to my attention that a lot of people are becoming bored with Nate because of his storylines. I'll admit that I do feel bad for Chace because lately his storylines have been sucking majorly and given him little screentime in which I usually find myself cringing because his scenes are so cliche or boring. But has anyone actually thought that, maybe it's not his storylines, maybe it's his acting?
Take Ed Westwick for example; in the first 5-6 episodes of Season 1, Chuck did not have much of a storyline. He was featured regularly alongside Nate giving him advice about his relationship problems with Blair; but he never had much of a story of his own. It was only until he hooked up with Blair did he really become a central character; but that's off topic now. What I'm trying to say is that in those 6 episodes, though Chuck was not much of a central character; Ed Westwick managed to grasp and fill in the role of Chuck so well that I simply fell in love with him. In what little amount of script Ed had to act out, he put a lot of effort and work into playing the character of Chuck that it made him stand out even when he was just a supporting actor in the storyline.
I think that what makes Nate so dull is because Chace doesn't have the same charisma as Ed does. Though he is mighty fine to look at, he just doesn't seem to capture the essence of the character of Nate the way Ed captures the essence of the character Chuck. When I watch him, I feel like playing Nate in Gossip Girl is just a job to pay the bills for him; but when I watch Chuck, I completely forget that it's a totally different person who plays Chuck. It seems he really understands and cares about his character. Ed Westwick absolutely OWNS Chuck; no one else could possibly fill in the role of Chuck the way he does. However, if they replaced Nate it probably would not make much difference. Unless of course, Nate is MEANT to be boring and dull in which case Chace does a fantastic job. I'm just saying...
Anyone agree with me?

I actually disagree with you I think Chace is a great actor but his storylines are borying that is it !! we have never seen Nate as a bad guy to judge ! I think playing bad guy is more interesting and likable for the fans .. while Nate in the books supposed to be lost and that he is in the show ..! Chace grapped a lot of girls fans in the show with his good looking comparing to Ed or Penn and that is a really good idea ...

Yeaa I don't actually think Chace is a terrible actor but he really doesn't get given much to work with, so it's hard to tell. I also agree with leightonlover that maybe the reason as to why Chuck appealed to many people early on in S1 is because he was the bad guy. He had some great quotes and was so bad compared to normal characters like Nate that people liked him for that. However, I do still agree with some of your points, I don't think it is fair or correct to soley blame the writers for the fail that is Nate Archibald of late. But all that being said I still love Nate no matter how boring his storylines is a core character of the show and it would be great if he was given better storylines and developed better.
And if all else fails well...Chace is still so preety to look at.

end of rant

Yeah I guess that the writers haven't given Chace much to work with other than the cliches which we've all seen already, so we haven't really been able to see the extent of Chace's acting. However, in comparison to Chair in the last episode - they didn't really have a storyline in that ep but they still managed to hold my interest enough and not seem forced or awkward in their scenes.

I can't decide whether it's Nate or just Chace's acting skills. I get lost in his eyes hair everytime!
Posted 10/17/2009 12:07:02 PM # - I think that since the Bree chick just broke it off with him that he should come to Jenny for support and they start dating. I don't know. That's just my opinion, but then again I'm a huge Nenny shipper.Posted 10/17/2009 12:15:04 PM #

I think Chace is a horrible actor, lmao. He's got two facial expressions and his voice is bland and dull. If he could act, maybe I wouldn't hate poor little Nate so much, but I do.

I think it's Nate. Chace can act btw, look at the other movies he has been in. The writers give him shitty storylines and make him a man-whore so of course we are going to think he sucks.

Chace is a good actor. It's the SLs as well as the fact that are about 1,000 other good looking blond surferboy-look alikes in the states. Ed is quite unique. It's pointless to compare them.

I think both. I don't find Chaces acting nor Nates character that interesting.
