Josh interview about Chuck (his other show) He mentions CB fans
-
Josh gave an interview about Chuck (his other show), because after yesterday episode it looks like viewers were pissed and he mentioned CB in one of his answers:
Well, in terms of being receptive to the fans versus telling the story you want to tell, is there a danger in just giving the fans what they want?
JS: Absolutely. Having been raised in the slums of the teen drama - just kidding, it's not a slum, it's a beautiful part of the state - those kind of shows, they just exist on the relationships that people are invested in. It's what they drive on week in and week out. As you stated yesterday in your blog, Chuck and Sarah is but an element of our show. There's a lot of other storytelling imperatives that are driving how these episodes unfold. Chuck and Sarah is a critical element of the show - we have said before that it is the heart of the show, and we stand by that - but there are other factors that are driving the story here. Given time, I think you will see this is a story that's unfolding not just on a romantic plane. There's a lot of Chuck and Blair fans on the "Gossip Girl" sites who've heard that couple's in trouble and are up in arms in a similar way, and it's like, if people are only happy, there is no conflict, therefore there is no storytelling, or drama. We're not arbitrary about it, we don't do it to drive conflict, We're not just going, "How do we keep them apart?" Part of your job as a storyteller, part of the writer's jobs here on the show is to mine all of these characters for maximum conflict and drama. There is an overarching design to the season, these stories are more than just romantic stories, and people have to trust that the journey we are taking them on is one that is designed to give audiences both what they want and what they need

You can create drama without breaking up a couple

Well at least they know that Chair fans were freaking out...lol...
And ITA with what you said. There a lots of internal issues that Chuck and Blair could explore. I'd rather see them together scheming against their enemies than apart.

And I think the CB breakup is more upsetting b/c we've already seen them as a non-couple for 2 seasons. Can't they just stay together for 1 whole season? They could have waited until season 4 to break them up, imo.

And when they get together, their relationship is put in the background, because they only have 2 or 3 little scenes each episode this season. Now we know why chair had so little screentime this season, in their heads you can't have SLs without drama.

This is where Josh and most other writers are wrong. Two people in a relationship can be happy with each other and yet be interesting by dealing with so many other issues either related to their relationship or it could be something totally unrelated.Part of the fun of a serious relationship is in growing up because of that special someone and in contributing to the growth and happiness of your better half.In real life every couple goes throught ups and downs but that doesn't mean they are facing, all these over the top dramas some of these TV Couples face. With this type of an approach i don't see them being able write a real relatable relationship. The pity is Chair have undeniable chemistry, they are undenialbly in love, so that don't need to do anything over the top and just give them simple S/L's but they don't seem to get this.
We're not arbitrary about it, we don't do it to drive conflict, We're not just going, "How do we keep them apart?" Here he is contraditing himself,he begans by saying that they are not doing it to drive conflict but latter he is saying it is his job to mine all these characters with maximum conflilct and drama, which just shows he is confused lol.
And as far as what the audience wants and needs is pretty simple if you look at it.The reason we are so invested in C and B is that:-
- They are fun and entertaining to watch.
- Some of us like to see something which we would want to have ourselves in real life and the things we saw in Chair were the connection,Chemistry, how two people can be themselves around each other freely,Passion, understanding and loving someone deeply, having someone to be by our side when when we need the most, how they contribute to each others growth.
Thus most of us want to see Chair succeed is because they get each other, they have been judged their whole life yet in eachother they have found someone with whom they don't need to worry about being judged. They are people like most who have self-doubts and that's when Blair comes in and shows Chuck how great he can be and similarly Chuck being beside Blair tells her that she doesn't need to overtly strive to find societies approval to make her special. Thus we all want to see a couple win against all odds with nothing but each other to carry them, and drama once in a while to create a road block for them to overcome is understandle it is TV afterall. But nobody want's that all the time,we want to see a couple happy and triumph, this is what most want and need and not conflict and drama. So i dont get what Josh says by giving us conflict he is giving us what we want and need.
But still lets hope these guys know what they are doing and that there is a ultimate purpose behind it all as he is saying.TBH i think Chair will come out of this stronger than ever. But still these guys need to understand that nobody wants drama, conflilct and tragedy all the time.

Interesting that he uses the word "trust" again.
This part confused me though b/c it may be true for the tv show "Chuck", I don't think it's true for GG at all...
There is an overarching design to the season, these stories are more than just romantic stories...
Really? Like what? B/c as far as I can tell GG is all about relationship whether they be romantic, friendship or family.

people have to trust that the journey we are taking them on is one that is designed to give audiences both what they want and what they need.
I don't consider myself one of those chair fans 'up in arms' about the break up - in fact im kinda all for it, but this statement irritates me. I find it extreamly hard to trust the writers especially when they are claiming all their storylines and conflicts are developed to take us on a journey we want. What did the Elle/Chuck and Vuck storylines give us besides the urge to vomit. In my eyes those two storylines tarnished the Chair dynamic rather than add to the suspense and angst of them getting together. Also how did the Serena/Tripp affair develop either Serena as a character or our love for the character. It may have led to an NS reunion, but, if anything left me feeling less than excited for the eventual hook up. I don't know, its just my opinion but the writers always seem to piss me off whenever they open their mouth. :)

Josh Schwartz if just full of it. He does contradict himself. He really believes that for a couple to be interesting and thrive, they need over the top storytelling. This is how he ruined the OC. The characters became caricatures, they started sleeping with everyone including each other and the storylines were just RIDICULOUS. Looks like he's not just happy with ruining one show, he has to take Gossip Girl down too. It just sucks that Chuck and Blair have to be his storytelling prop especially since they're the BEST part of Gossip Girl.

Well at least he is aware that the large CB fanbase is upset. I think the more we let our voices be heard the better.

Blair: You say I always bet against you. Not this time. I'm all in.
