You do not fuck with them.
I can see that no matter what I say it won't matter because there seems to be some uninformed assumption here and in the chair thread that my opinions are worthless because I apparently only started watching the show in season 4 and I'm a dair fan so my opinion must be void.
I guess I don't owe it to anyone to say that I watched the first ever episode when it aired back in 2007, and havn't missed one since. Or that I used to be an obsessive Chair/Serenate shipper and even back then I didn't like the concept of the NJBC because we were given no evidence of them doing what they apparently stood for..
But you know, me sharing my opinion is obviously worthless because by the sounds if things you've all already made up your mind about me. So whatever. You win. Congrats.
Thanks Swampbox, that's exactly what I was trying to say. Somewhere along the lines though it turned to me apparently saying that chair fans only invented the njbc because they were jealous of dair. If you re-read my posts though you'll see that I said nothing even remotely similar. Just that I feel like fans make a huge thing out of the njbc while it seems like the the don't really see it that way based on the lack of attention. if the njbc was really some big important dynamic, you'd think they'd actually give us scenes of the group together njbc style.
I also loved what you said about the players of the njbc working well in one on one interactions, but as a group they don't. That's exactly what I feel too.
Now I'll bow out again before I'm accused of only saying these things because I like Dair and all of us dair fans apparently only started watching last year.
I just love this NJBC GIF set... it reminds me of old times. Gossip Girl's first season was beautiful, its most original, and best in quality. It was critically acclaimed, had a larger audience share, and critics as well as the cast were excited about it.
(I thought it was silly in 4x09 to rehash and recycle the whole "Jenny steals/duplicates Serena's costume and mask" deal.)
I also think the putting on and taking off of masks is symbolic. The first season's writers were extremely smart and talented people (one of them, Felicia Henderson is an EP on Fringe now). During the first season, the UES was its own living, breathing milieu, almost a character in and of itself. These teens grew up as part of it. And life on the UES means knowing when to don your mask for self-preservation and protection. So I thought it was fun to see how Dan and Jenny "borrowed" masks, how Vanessa didn't wear one at all, etc. It was a wonderful, subtle play on the social milieu.
I was just re-reading this thread, and actually All lurk and no play, forever-young said that she liked the concept of the njbc but not the way it was executed (or wasn't executed which is more accurate). That's exactly the way I feel too.
But If one of them is in real trouble as in Serena in season one - they are there not to judge but to help . I think Blair made that very clear in her speech in season oneRead more: http://www.tvfanatic.com/forum/gossip-girl/general-discussion/you-do-not-fuck-with-them/page-7.html#ixzz1rm7icyLO
(jumping in here) yes, she did, in season one, no one is denying that. but things haven't been that way in a very long time. now the only thing they do is judge eachother and throw eachother under the bus. Serena went behind nates back, nate fired serena, serena posts blasts that screw up blairs life and relationship. blair apprently gets her uninvited to some premiere. Blair doesn't really trust chuck anymore, or she didn't in 5x19. Its not one person straying, they all have lost touch with what was awesome about them in that one episode back in the first season, so at this point i just don't know why chair fans talk about how great they still are...
I don't understand how people are saying the njbc doesn't exist. It's been there since Season 1. I agree with Liz- I've always loved the saying "Make new friends but keep the old-the new are silver and the old are gold" The NJBC will always have a special bond having grown up together and been through so much together. I love their friendship and I hope they come together before the season ends!!
We're all entitled to our opinions, of course. This is why I maintain that the Chair vs. Dair debates aren't just about who Blair Waldorf should date. We see this TV show differently, for whatever reasons that we do.
The NJBC takes absolutely nothing away from Dan, Dair, or Date... he just has a different kind of friendship with them than they have with each other. Doesn't mean that Dan is a bad person or that he hasn't grown very close to Nate, and it doesn't mean that he doesn't love Blair. It's actually realistic and healthy for Blair and Dan to have friendships and relationships and interactions with other people.
More NJBC goodness... whether it's two, three, or all four of them, they rock.
