Addison's field

   I have a question, and maybe you guys can answer it. Exactly what is Addison's specialization? I thought she was OB/GYN but they don't take care of babies. And pediatricians don't take care of women. So.... anybody?

   I thought pediatricians do take care of women when there's a baby involved...but I could be wrong.

   Nope they don't at all. (I know this cuz of going through the whole crazy pregnancy/labor/delivery with mine). The OB takes care of the pregnant woman and delivers the baby, and then immediately hands it off to the pediatrician, or the neonatal ICU if necessary. Hmmm .... we'll get this figured out...

   ScaryandDamaged is right, OB's don't take care of newborn infants, and pediatricians don't take care of women. I think they have really stretched the limits of medical realism with Addison's field. She appears to be an obstetrical surgeon, but also looks after pregnant women not needing surgery, takes care of the newborns, and pitches in whenever help is needed in the ER or OR as well! But who cares, I heart Addison.

   Got it! Perinatologist: An obstetrical subspecialist concerned with the care of the mother and fetus at higher-than-normal risk for complications. Since the perinatal period, depending on the definition, starts at the 20th to 28th week of gestation and ends 1 to 4 weeks after birth, a perinatologist logically could be a obstetrician or pediatrician but, in practice, a perinatologist is an obstetrician. The comparable area of pediatrics is neonatology. A high-risk baby might be cared for by a perinatologist before birth and by a neonatologist after birth. The word "perinatologist" is a linguistic sandwich of the Greek "peri-" meaning "around or about", "natal" from the Latin "natus" meaning "born" and "ologist" from the Greek "logos" meaning "student of."

   I think they actually called her a neonatal surgeon on one of the GA info sites I was reading last night, but a perinatologist could be a neonatal surgeon.

   ScaryandDamaged you are right--according to the offical GA magazine which I just got, it lists Addison as (head)neonatal surgeon.
