Oh right Shannon, that hospital in Seattle is #12. How did you ever find that?

It was funny, when the story was in the news a couple of weeks back about the real life domino transplant (they mentioned Grey's in the article), I posted that (I think under Grey's Anatomy = Real medicine) and I think it was Emma asked if Johns Hopkins was really the number 1 hospital in the US. a couple of days later, that article popped up on my newsfeed screen when I got on the computer in the morning, so I posted it...I am impressed that they do so much stuff that is real. Some of it seems impossible, but then I search the internet and find that maybe it is rare or obscure, but it does exist!

Well they do have a medical producer, Linda Klein, who keeps the medicine as real as possible with some creative licenses.
That list is compiled by the US News & World Report and they compile it every year. They do undergraduate schools, graduate schools (including medical school), and children's hospitals in addition to hospitals.
What's interesting about the University of Washington is that although their medical center is ranked #12 as an overall hospital as of 2009, the University of Washington School of Medicine has been ranked the number 1 medical school in the country for the past 15 consecutive years in primary care; in research, Harvard ranks number 1.
Also note that the 2009 Hospital rankings didn't get posted until very recently (around July 15) so they could not have used the rankings listing in 2009 when the season 5 premiere was filmed in the mid-late 2008. If they did draw inspiration from the rankings list, they would have used the 2008 Hospital rankings and UofWashington was ranked #10.
It's merely coincidence that SGH was ranked #12 and then UofWashington was ranked #12 as well.
