Sara Ramirez's Dangerous Diet
-
-i just thought this was interesting "Grey's Anatomy" star SARA RAMIREZ has struggled with weight issues for almost as long as she can remember. But that didn't keep her from becoming a success in a business where packing on the pounds is considered career suicide. In the January issue of Glamour magazine, the Tony® Award-winning actress talks frankly about her yo-yo weight loss -- down to a size six -- and gains -- up to a size 14. A talented singer, Ramirez attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where, surrounded by skinny actresses and dancers, body-image issues came to the fore. "I would diet hard-core, lose a lot of weight and feel really good about myself. Then I would have moments of unhappiness. My way of dealing was to eat and eat and eat," she tells the magazine. Ramirez stayed in New York following school and performed in PAUL SIMON's musical The Capeman on Broadway. After the play ended, she decided to try television, so she went on a starvation diet, comprised of a celery stick, some peanut butter and two protein shakes a day, plus a strenuous workout. She lost weight, but when she moved out to L.A. and went on auditions, she still felt like the largest girl in the room. "I started taking these crazy diet pills," she recalls. When they started to make her heart race, she got scared, but she didn't quit until she had been on them for six months. Now, a series regular on "Grey's Anatomy," Ramirez has had to learn to accept her body since the show's executive producer ,SHONDA RHIMES, keeps writing scenes where she appears half-naked. "I went to Shonda Rhimes, and said, 'Do you really want me to do this? Why me? I have so much cottage cheese here and here,'" Sara tells Glamour. "She just looked at me and said, 'Work it.' And sure enough, doing the scene helped me get over a lot of my issues." Sara Ramirez plays Dr. Callie Torres on "Grey's Anatomy."Posted 12/8/2006 1:00:00 AM #

This made me so sad. Why the media has been allowed to get away with imposing narrow standards of beauty on people I will never understand. It is so irresponsible. I think SR is totally beautiful yet even she has struggled with weight issues most of her adult life. Imagine what it must feel like if you're not a blonde size 0. No wonder so many young people have problems with body image and low self esteem. As far as I'm concerned it is a damning depiction of just how shallow some peoples ideas of beauty remain. Yet another reason to laud the incomparable Shonda Rhimes and Greys.Posted 12/9/2006 1:00:00 AM #

I agree with you Didi..I read that article about SR. I can really relate to her character on GA but I think she is beatiful. What is wrong with some curves? I was skinny like Ellen P. until I turned 28 and the last 3 years I have gained weight...So I guess I can say I can relate to both of them.Posted 12/9/2006 1:00:00 AM #

That is so funny purplemerder, I was never "skinny" in my twenties, probably an American 6 but when I had my daughter 5 years ago - I gained some weight - now an 8 and it's still there! Skinny people rarely get the sympathy curvier girls do and being skinny can be just as tough on the girl - either you're assumed to have an eating disorder or envied for getting into that size 2 outfit - whichever way you cannot win! Our obsession with weight is ridiculous, as long as a person is healthy, eats the right food and gets adequate exercise that is fine. EP talks about the obsession with her weight in most of her interviews and you know what? She is probably dealing with issues similar to SR. People pick on SR because she is curvy, then they turn around and pick on EP - too thin. Make up your minds people - or leave them alone.Posted 12/10/2006 1:00:00 AM #
