Writers are Insensitive to Children with Cleft Palates
-
I came into this thread a bit late: BUT let me say Itsmiles910 YOU ROCK! It's about being respectful to the families of children afflicted with a cleft lip /palate. I have both and oddly enough most people don't even see it (no they aren't lying to make me feel better)! My mother however is left with deep deep scars from the comments of others! If she would have been watching this episode when I was young I can not begin to image the damage it would have done to her self esteem. The comment may have been off the cuff to some, but it was wrong in all sense of purpose! "A sucker for them." Interesting word choice a child with a cleft does not have the ability to suck until after the cleft is repaired and then is still limited.
If Sloans character needs so much attention bring the story line back around and show his repairing a cleft.
I only hope the ambassadors for www.smiletrain.com get a whiff of this story line~sure did win Smile Pinkie an Oscar!

Thanks sandyfayek for speaking on behalf of people with clefts. I started this post because I was outraged with the comment that the writers had Sloan making since my daughter was born with both a cleft lif and palate. I too think it would be awesome if they DID show Sloan repairing a cleft. We donate frequently to The Smile Train and Smil Pinky is a wonderful film that can help educate the many people out there that are ignorant and oblivious to this issue. Than YOU.

For one thing, they are always protraying Sloane as a mean person and always making inappropriate comments or saying rude things. When he said that about cleft palates, it was implied to the viewers that it was one of Sloane's mean, inappropriate comments, and that it was not meant to be offensive. It was just Mark being the Mark we know. Also, they are always insensitive about patients conditions on the show. They see it as science, not someone's pain. Remember all the times Christina was so happy when people were seriously hurt? To them, it's all medical, not concerning the people.

exactly, they love when patients are hurt, like the valentines one Hunt says it's serious, and both MEREDITH and Cristina are like YESS so excitingly lol

I mean this with the upmost respect because i do not have any children of my own but i love children with all my heart. I agree that it was a rude comment but i also agree that, that is how mark's character is.
This will be my one and only statement about this and i hope you do take it to heart. If your child is alive and healthy that should be all that matters, not something that a fake character on a medical drama says because there are mothers and fathers that would give anything to have their child alive or healthy, i personally know many of them.
I think it is great that you stand up for your child the way that you do, but think about it.. if it had been any disease other than one that affects you personally would it have offended you?? or offended you as greatly as it did?
Like i said i mean no disrespect my anything i said so if i did offend anyone i apologize

Lexie: Mark, I'm dying. Please tell Meredith I love her and that she is a good sister.
