Big, Huge Hahn News!!!!!

McSmarty: I totally agree with you, you took the words right out of my mouth. I am almost unable to think about this yet, it is so shocking and it disgusts me. It goes right into my gut, and I almost feel sick. If it weren't because of the Callie-Erica relationship that Brooke was fired, what was it then? Sure as hell not crappy performances, as Brooke Smith is one of the best actresses on that show. Seems to me like a little too much of a coincedence that Brooke Smith is fired at the same time as they are rewriting Melissa George's role as a bisexual intern (is this true?)
Anyways. Bad move to fire Brook Smith, really bad move.

Shonda Rhimes' response to the matter:
"Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian, Erica Hahn. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incrediblecomedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie-Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."

ABC is collapsing in on themselves; they've become a living contradiction.
ABC claims they didn't fire Brooke Smith because of her gay character, and claim it was because they didn't like her character. Which is it? Did you not like Erica Hahn because she foiled the egos of characters or did you not like Erica Hahn because she was gay? Either way ABC is in the wrong and their rationale unjustified.
If you don't like where the character is at, do some re-writing. They've done a major overhaul with multiple characters: look at Addison who was hostile in her first season or Callie who was the "freak" and completely ostracized.
You don't stop writing a character because you don't like her--you stop writing a character because you have to smother a fire before it gets out of control.
You don't fire an actress because she agrees to fight for a cause she believes in--you fire an actress because she fights for a cause the conservative media disagrees with.
This goes above and beyond Grey's Anatomy losing a character and an exceptionally talented actress. (Yes, I'd like to see you pull off bitch like Brooke does. Such emotion requires more concentration than happy-go-lucky.) In fact, it has to do with the fact an actress unjustly lost her job because she saw the opportunity to further equality.
Brooke took on something much larger than herself: she and Sara Ramirez entered into the first fictional lesbian relationship on prime time TV. They're not the young, hot blondes that sneak a passionate kiss in the locker room, they were curvaceous, middle-aged women that represented the real physique of America's female. They saw an opportunity to give a voice to those who didn't have one--who knew they would be stripped of their security?
Let's put are biases aside--the Callica fans and the non-Callica fans--there is a larger issue here: the media is stifling the voices of the writers and thus ignoring the voices of the people.
This is bigger than Erica Hahn. It's bigger than Brooke Smith, her husband, and her children. This is about you and I, and the media dictating how we view the world.

I haven't been this furious at a network in years. Almost everything I've wanted to say about this has already been said above, so I won't bore anyone with repeating it. But the rewrite of Melissa George's character, the firing (or letting go), of Rebecca Romijn's bisexual character from Ugly Betty, and now Brooke Smith getting axed...it is absolutely clear to me that ABC is making a statement on its opinion of GLBT. I don't care if they say it's not because she was a lesbian. 'Simply don't like her' is not a reason to fire someone. If that's the case, Addison should have been axed in II, Callie in III, and Alex in I. Brooke Smith was obviously caught completely offguard by this, which makes the point that it wasn't a money issue. And from what I can tell she hasn't been making any iffy news like Isaiah or even Katherine. I firmly believe they fired her because they were too worried about having a lesbian relationship develop full force on a prime time TV show.
I'm not like McDreamy - I'm going to keep watching the show. It's not the show's fault, and it's not Shonda's fault, so I don't think the show should have to suffer any more than it already is. But I am FURIOUS at ABC for doing something so hypocritical and shallow.

I agree with most of what has been said here, so i'm not going to re-say it. I have been loosiing interest in this show for a while, but this is the final straw. I respect everyone's opinions and I am not saying you are wrong for what you feel or are doing, but this is good bye for me, from this show and this website. Thank you all I will miss you but i must stand up for what I believe in.
