Possible solution to Peter's power problem...
So, there's a real dilemma here. I know that all of us fans want Peter to get his original power back, but Peter really needs to not be as over powered as he once was. Is there a solution?
I think there is. What if Peter was able to continue to take the power of whoever he touches temporarily, but is only able to permanently maintain a power from someone he has a real emotional connection with. This could push Peter away from being the wimp he is now, keep him from being overpowered, but still allow him to temporarily take the powers of enemies/aquantances should he need them.
Permanently, Peter would only be able to keep the following abilities so far: flight (Nathan), super strength/agility (Mohinder, who he's always had that weird ass connection with,) dreaming of the future (Angela,) and cellular regeneration (Claire.) Him getting the regeneration with any other power whatsoever makes him overpowered in my mind, though... But this would be better than nothing.Posted 10/5/2009 1:58:31 AM #
It could also lead to him becoming emotionally attached to people who's powers he really wants, though. Kind of a double edged sword there. Would he have conscious control over his emotions for someone?Posted 10/5/2009 1:41:50 PM #
Well, you can't fake honest emotional attachment. So he would only be able to permanently maintain the powers of those he truly has a deep connection with. And that would force the writers to actually, you know, focus on Peter as a character and develop his relationships with people. And, in my vision of how this could work, Peter could still steal powers from anyone he touches in the way he does now... he could just only keep those one's like he does now, one at a time.I think this would keep Peter from being overpowered, while also allowing him to "balance out" Sylar in the future. It could also keep Peter from getting "too powerful, too fast" like he did before.Posted 10/5/2009 2:27:27 PM #
I personally thought that the overpowered Peter was infinitely more interesting than this new version. The whole, I'm taking on so many powers that I can't control them concept was awesome, and kept him from becoming too powerful on his own. Then they had to give him the stupid "hunger" thing from Sylar and ruin everything. I thought that was such a bad idea, not just that Peter got it, but that it was brought up at all. Sylar was more interesting of a character when he was evil for the power, not because of it.Posted 10/5/2009 2:44:49 PM #
i used to strongly agree with the peter wasnt too powerful view. now i am in agreement, just not too strongly.
to me, peter the character represented the core human model of unconditional love. He displayed this, not just to family, but to others too, mostly people in need or danger.
he was neo, sylar was smith. jesus and the romans...etc
he was based on love, sylar on hate. one sought power, the other struggled to deal with it, and even avoided it. As people, we relate to the hero, the all powerful one. and we enjoyed the fights between them, and wanted more.
peter was limited by this love. he couldnt knowingly use his power in a negative fashion. he struggled to control the powers he gained for many reasons.
the first real mistake they made was showing a future, badass peter, because then we had a picture in sight of what peter would become when he finally mastered his powers, and could take control. like neo when he died and then came back and kicked smith's ass.
then we wanted the kick ass peter again.
so, when season two started, instantly we were disappointed because he'd lost his memory, and his development had been put back.
as this site has mentioned on numerous occasions, and righly so, season two was a shambles due to the writer's thingy.
but season three!! they regally shafted peter up the anal....with a strap-on!!!! why, oh, why did they give him the hunger????????????????? it went against all that was peter, and resulted in losing his powers!!
then the injection. again, would the season one peter inject himself to regain power? nope!
i know what people are going to say! he was too powerful. they needed to get rid of timetravel. he created too many loopholes. etc..... and you'd be right! he did. because of the storylines, writer's, and fan expectation.
but...his new power is good. he has to struggle to get the wanted power. then he has to rely on other heroes, or people for help. and then he kicks the person's ass whose ability he has taken. good writing is making his ability work. and the character has gone back to his unconditional love for others.
although, there is still scope for his power to progress and develop.
i said before, i think it would be good if he was able to permanantly take powers like arthur (although arthurs full power was not wholely wxplained). but because of his love element thingy, he'd only take powers off people who didnt want them anymore, or villains.Posted 10/5/2009 4:13:24 PM #
I hope that through his relationship with this Emma girl that he will begin to develop his power into something more. Can't really see how it will happen, though. Maybe he'll take her power and start to develop that, and then somehow it will lead to him rediscovering his lost potential. Fingers crossed, everybody!Posted 10/5/2009 6:09:02 PM #
His current power would be better if he could hold more than one power at once.
But Sylar's dad said that he had no idea how many powers he'd stolen still worked so maybe there is a limit to how many powers one can take, or maybe the transference process is imperfect and the powers fade if they're not increasingly used. Sylar has taken many powers and never used them again. So maybe the same would be with Peter if he took too many powers.Posted 10/6/2009 8:42:18 AM #
Ravehill..didnt you catch it...Peter can hold more than one power at a time...hes got the tattoo thing right now from samuel...he was trying to show HRG..and he used super speed right after meeting claire..which brings up a point ...is PETER ACCUMULATING powers....honestly because I thought it was one at a time after he touched someone...which is kind of cool...somebody explain to me?Posted 10/6/2009 11:41:06 AM #
I am not sure if the tattoo us really an ability because it worked around Samuel and then it dint when he showed to HRG. This is a good question I want an answer too!!Posted 10/6/2009 11:52:55 AM #
I would venture a guess that the tattoo on Peter was Samuel's poewr at work, and not necessarily Peter using Samuel's power. I think Peter is still only capable of holding one power at a time, but he has learned to control whether or not he "takes" a power. That is, he can hug Nathan without accidentally acquiring the ability to fly, and he can shake hands with Samuel without losing his super speed.
I'm going to posit at theory that is likely way off and never going to happen, but it is a possibility. After the eclipse in S1 when Peter discovered he could do all these things, it was also happening at a time when he was romantically interested in someone. As such, it could be argued that his "empathy" was at a high. Perhaps that is the role Emma will play. She will help Peter rediscover his true empathy and thus enable him to once again acquire more than one power at a time. A bit cheesy perhaps, but I agree that Peter was infinitely more interesting in S1 when he was learning to cope with all these abilities, and given his personality and natural inclination to help people, he would be the one not only most deserving of powers, but also best equipped to handle the responsibilities that come with.Posted 10/6/2009 2:48:15 PM #
