I'm a Heroes fan, maybe not as into it as some of the people here, but I do really enjoy the show. Am I the only one who thinks the whole circus storyline is completely lame? I want to be immersed in the show and love it, but the main circus guy sometimes makes me burst out in laughter because he's so not scary, ominous, or powerful. Everyone at the circus seems overly dramatic. I don't know, my wife and I used to love Heroes Night, and we still watch it, but now we roll our eyes and groan an awful lot. It's almost like it's not even the same show anymore. Can anyone else relate?
Not really. Samuel is scary BECAUSE he doesn't look or act that scary. He's like the serial killer living next door that you have no idea about until you're locked in his basement.
And what do you mean he's not powerful? I'd say that anyone who could control the earth under your feet clearly has the upper hand in any battle that doesn't involve flying.
He can use it to block energy based powers, cause earth tremors to knock concentration of mental based powers, and if they're still alive, he can bury them.
Plus he can control basic minerals which allows him to do the whole tattoo thing.
I think one of the things that makes Samuel so scary is that his main weapon is manipulation, and not violence or outright aggression, a la Sylar from S1. He obviously has his carnies living in fear of him, and has proven to be a master of saying what people want/need to hear to get them to join his fold. I love that cerebral aspect of the character.
Samuel does not need to show Evil in its entirety..the Mystery element he portrays is supposed to send chills down our spine. He's sick, twisted, manipulative, selfish, and wants power. Now ask yourself would you like to be friends with somebody that has those qualities?? Doesn't that make you afraid if somebody like that is talking to your children?
Wow, ok. I guess I'm alone on this one. You guys are right that he is manipulative and has a supernatural power and could be a powerful enemy. I think there's just something in the actor's portrayal that isn't working for me. Plus, in the past all the powers have been more or less believable (at least within the context of the show): Nathan could fly, Peter could absorb, Claire could regenerate, Parkman could read and control minds. Samuel can inject ink that moves through someone's body and chokes them in the shape of a hand. I know I'm posting this on a fan site, but that's just lame writing. It could be a lot better. If he used a power to choke someone directly it would be more scary than going through all the trouble of using that ink. Just my opinion, of course. I still enjoy the show, but it seems to have slipped a bit for some reason.
Thanks for all your thoughts, though!
Oh, with regards to the serial-killer-next-door comment, that's a good point. To me, however, that effect would be achieved far more successfully if he looked mild-mannered and harmless as opposed to the flamboyance, spiky hair, black nail polish, etc. that he has now. Again, just my opinion.
But he's the ringleader of a carnival. He's going to look flamboyant.
This could probably go under a "Samuel's Powers" topic, but since it's being called into question here, I have a theory about how his power works.
From reading these forum's I've come to associate Samuel with Magneto. So if you think of Magneto's powers of being able to move metal, and thus being able to move Wolverine, or people who have been injected with Mercury, I think Samuel's power is somewhat similar.
Obviously, he can control dirt and maybe other minerals, on a massive scale, but he can also control them on a microscopic level as well. So he uses a special ink that he can control to alter photos and make tattoos that he can move and control.
Definitely an odd extension of his powers, but useful when used with Lydia's fortune telling ability or just to display how powerful he is by demonstrating that he has several different methods of killing someone.
Besides, in a show like this, abilities are going to be copied from other sources, but I like it when they come up with a unique spin on things.
Bottom line, Samuel is good for this show!
