How is it that Jake can do magic by himself ?

Maybe, because he was near a witch (a.k.a Cassie), and he was able to use the magic.

wen they wer bounding circles powers diana sed that they had 2 bound the circles powers 4 control n wen nick died cassies granma sed that the familys blood lines r bounded so mayb jake is only bound by blood line not by his powers probz cus he wasnt ther wen the rital/ceromony tuk place :D

i think it is one of those things that shouldn't be looked at too closely, it's a tv show and they just broke the rules a little to move the plot in the needed direction. or he has the family's cristal since he also has the book.
oh and btw, the correct term is warlock not wizard, that's how they call the male witches in TVD.

Jake is a witch as well. I think he isn't fully a part of the circle. But only because of his bloodline (because his brother bounded). It don't think that that means that if your brother dies, you will loose your powers. So he can still do magic, because he is a witch and isn't fully bounded to a circle.
