I read this article on twinflames/twinsouls, it really explains it well and i instantly thought of damon and elena.
Here's what it says.

I believe that Damon and Elena are twin flames and I hope that, even though the writers hardly ever stick with the books, I hope they keep that part.

I certainly hope they bring in D/E connection concept. There's no hope for D/E in the books now, considering publishers were huge twilight-fanboys and could not accept D/E endgame...

I think they will, I just think they go about doing things a different way. They still have the books to get ideas from and so they can use them to expand the show even further and do better with explaining the aspects taken from the books and placed in the show.

They can't use too many ideas from the book, since Books are sort of Elena-centered a lot...
And I just can't see current tv-show Elena invading hell itself or cutting a demon in pieces in the air with a simple scissors till it begs to spare its life.
