Except that that show was self-aware. People lived there and just ignored that its going on, being in denial and all

for hundred years and more Mayor kept everything under the wraps

Oh, I know that but still. There were times when it was so obvious...     In TVD there's no real exposition nor narrative to explain why the town is SO FUCKING LIFELESS.    Well, there is the Coucil that covers everything up and hides the truth. And like in Sunnydale they are in denial. Actually, if you think about it the deaths here aren't that much compared to Buffy were every single day people died since Sunnydale is full of demons and vampires and other creatures so it make sense that in Mystic Falls they don't notice... but there was that time when Klaus- during the day!- tried to destroy Elena's house. That time we discovered that Elena has neighbours... they should have noticed that something was wrong!  That made me want to write a fanfiction about Elena' s neighbours... I mean all those time that Elena screamed they should have heard it... and why nobody was curious about who attacked John? ... If you think about it Jenna got stabbed too and Alaric... IMO everyone in Mystic Falls either think that the Gilbert's house is haunted or they think that Elena and Jeremy and all the others are criminals or something: that would explain the screams and Jeremy has a bad reputatio since he was a drug addict and a drug dealer... maybe they think that Elena is like him who knows? It wuld be nice if we could see the point of view of the normal people, what they think about the Gilberts and the Salvatores and if anybody wonders what happened to Zack Salvatore (poor Zack, no one cares about him :( no one finds strange that his "little vacation" isthat long).

The amount of that stuff is bigger, but so are counter-measures.

I mean, we have a law-firm spanning entire world and multiple other dimensions, with the higher-ups being able to  turn back time and alter reality.  We have Powers That Be that have also displayed a horribly huge amount of power.

Sunnydale citizens did notice it all, they just ignored it. Hell, Joyce herself ignored all the strangeness surrounding her daughter till she outright spelled it out to her.

Then in third season when Joyce makes the whole anouncement, the town people gathered ALSO are not surprised at the stuff.  They are just in fear.

Sunnydale is no different from Twin Peaks, Innsmouth or any other "shady town with secrets". Those who live there fear and pretend its all not there. People who graduate would go away to other towns, new clueless people would arrive, writing off all the stuff as "local folk legends" and the town would go smaller and more desolate over the time - after all Mayor did not plant o have this town stand there for long. He just needed it to last a hundred or so years.

With Mystic Falls we saw NO AWARENESS AT ALL apart from the council, who is ALSO damn clueless.

In Sunnydale you could have deaths and all the strange things becvause those responsible for keeping track of it would just look away. Because the narrative actually completely explained and showed how it all works and how world outside the town is.

In Mystic Falls, A TOWN WITH ONE STREET TOTAL (compared to Sunnydale which is medium-town at least, with districts), you had gazillion of deaths of KNOWN people - council members, founding families, news reporters, policemen.

Mystic Falls might have no demons, but the deaths are harder to cover-up yet there's no narrative indication that anything is EVEN BEING covered-up.

As you said yourself, Klaus throwing stuff in the middle of the day in populated area, hybrids being beheaded on the porch, people getting hit by car and walking away....it all makes no sense reaction-wise.

Also how the council has apparently been putting vervain in the town's water supply, and yet there's a free-for-all for all vampires, everyone's compellable. When was the last time Klaus, Damon, Stef etc. couldn't bite a girl because she was on vervain? Kinda ironic how the only ones who seem to still be on vervain in this town are Stefan, Damon and probably Caroline(and of course Elena).

Speaking of - why wasn't Bonnie on vervain in 3x20? She's a witch who doesn't trust vampires and yet Alaric got a lovely meal out of her. That's even more stupid than Matt's lack of a health insurance.

Not to mention that according to 2x15 Elena's parents were hardcore vampire hunters, and yet their pretty teen daughter, who'd already been targeted by an original vampire a few years back was very much vervain-free and defenceless.

Not to mention that vervain can be very toxic, cause miscarriages to pregnant women, etc, not counting allergies.

Who looked like Stepford Parents and showed no indication ever of being in any way competent. WAs the show supposed to convince they were these badass hunters? Sorry, objective failed, show

their pretty teen daughter, who'd already been targeted by an original vampire

And it was never explained how they knew that she was a Doppelganger.      We have Powers That Be that have also displayed a horribly huge amount of power.  Yes, but the Powers That Be  didn't care about Buffy or about the people that live in Sunnydale. They only cared about Angel.      With Mystic Falls we saw NO AWARENESS AT ALL apart from the council, who is ALSO damn clueless.   That's true. :(      When was the last time Klaus, Damon, Stef etc. couldn't bite a girl because she was on vervain? The girls couldn't be on vervain because it was important for the plot that they weren't. Speaking of - why wasn't Bonnie on vervain in 3x20?     Because they needed her to be bitten by Evil!Alaric for the plot!     Not to mention that according to 2x15 Elena's parents were hardcore vampire hunters, and yet their pretty teen daughter, who'd already been targeted by an original vampire a few years back was very much vervain-free and defenceless.   Of course she was vervain- free! How could she have that special moment with Damon otherwise? The show needed to be vervain- free so they could have Elena is Season 4 remember that moment and be oh so confused. So the reason for that was the plot again. See, every problem in the show is because of this: the characters don't do things according to who they are but according to what the plot needs them to do. In Buffy instead the characters reacted to the events according to their personality.

Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Damon

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.
