Book Damon threatened to kill Elena's little sister to make elena drink blood, pretty much murdered people as he liked and was quite a dick. But the pairing worked. WHY? Because Elena had a propper character development for her to overlook these things.
DE stopped working not just because Damon went into a misogynist rapist crybaby mode. IT stopped working ALSO because Elena's character got retconed from a mere girl with ptsd and survivor's guilt into a complete and utter mary sue who actually IS all those traits she wants to appear to be.
DE stopped being feasible or interesting and became just plain creepy and as obnoxious as SE, not just because of Damon but because of miss cardboard too.

all that you said happened mostly after S1 when Elena was already built up as this incarnation of holiness who would never support that and damon became despicable.
lol what??you seem to have forgotten season 1.allow me to refresh your memory.Damon raped Caroline in s1,he attacked Bonnie infront of Elena in s1 and the fact that he slept with her mother and turned her was also revealed in s1 itslef.so before telling me to get my facts straight,maybe you should get yours.
also DE in s1 was pretty much a crackship.Damon was in love/obsessed with Katherine and Elena loved stefan and only viewed Damon as a friend.

Which would all be comparably okay if Elena's cahracter development continued the direction it was going then (Someone who used to be fun and badass, but due to the whole survivors guilt has developed cptsd and is trying to be and pretend to be this martyr because it makes her feel better - hell the whole point of Germy in S1 was so the viewers could see that despite what ELena TRIES to do, not everyone is fooled by her behavior and Germy did not fear to call her out on her selfishness and egoism, which suddenly disappeared in S2.)
As I said, Book-Damon threatened to kill a 5-10 year old sister of Elena just to make her drink his blood. And overall was a giant dick. But that was forgivable because Elena was no different.
S1 Elena was built in such a way that as she goes over her ptsd she would be able to forgive those things, not to mention that S1 DE was all about developing both of them into better and more honest people.
DE and the whole rapist problem became a real problem in S2 when Damon DID EXACT SAME THING with Andie despite now not having an excuse of "being obsessed with Katherine", AT the same time the pairing became unshippable because of Elena who suddenly became this reincarnation of jesus who does no wrong, instead of being just someone who wants to do no wrong because it makes her feel better.

Which is contradicted by entire narrative of S1 - The tomb episode was pretty much to show us that Damon makes a conscious choice to leave his past behind and look for Elena.

S1 Elena WANTED to view him as a friend, but S1 was clearly built around her hypocrisy and trauma with supposed goal of her getting over those things and becoming herself yet again.
Cue S2 and all of that is ruined.
I have no problems with both sides of pairing doing morally questionable stuff. After all my OTPs of all times have been LoVe, Spuffy and Chair(till hotel) and all three have their share of completely fucked up stuff. The problem is believability
Two dickish jerks falling for each other and starting to showcase their better sides is okay (which is essentially what Book-DE is )
Show trying to pair a friggin messiah with misogynist bastard is not.

I like most of them except delena ,St Elena,klaroline !I like the idea of kennett and I would not mind bam on either!for wood,srarolineare awesome!

being fun and selfish and egoistic is not comparable to rape and murder.like you said s1 elena had her flaws ,she could've gotten over the fact that he banged her mother and turned her but i still dont think she would've just forgiven him for raping and abusing her childhood friend and trying to eat her best friend even if it was in a fit of rage.
and as tvd show characters are too different and completely watered down versions of their book selves,there is really no comparison.and to me elena was more of neutral character than badass or even capable of badassery tbh.even then she was too moral to give damon a thought.

also at that point,even if damon had tried to move on, he wasn't completely over katherine either,case in point he would have taken back katherine in blink of an eye if she'd said the right thing.when you spend more than half your life obsessing over some1,i think it takes some time to get over them lol.
