     I don't think they ever meant to entirely base TV Elena off book Elena, i think Plec said something along those lines. This Elena we see was always what they had in mind of the character. Although they borrow the book stuff, it's kind of a lose adaptation. The Elena I saw in S1, I never for a second believed she used to be a cheerleader, was popular and all. Grief or not she came a bland packagae already. S2 and S3 she just became even worse.

     I think she even said that book Elena is too selfish or something so the viewers wouldnot like her.....LOL as if they like her now...

      

     The Elena I saw in S1, I never for a second believed she used to be a cheerleader, was popular and all. 

     You know even if in s1 you could have sort of believed it...LOL s3 finale convinced me she was lame retard ALWAYS.

     Yeah,a pparantly Book Elena was "too striking and rude" so they made her "more modest".  Still there were shades of book Elena in S1 Elena. 

     The Elena I saw in S1, I never for a second believed she used to be a cheerleader, was popular and all. 

      

     Disagree. - She had make-up on, she constantly switched into different clothes, she had jewelry, from time to time she would blow up at people for something(mostly at Damon). It felt like she was toning both how she dresses and how she acts down because she was mourning. 

     Cue S2 and its like she is constantly high.

     ^ I certainly didn't see the popularity aspect. But rather she was more strong willed, her tolerance of bs was still low and she cared about her friends then. But overally, I just saw Elena as the same person she is in the present, just that she's even worse now.
