and well, most of monsters or creatures in first season is a homage. (Master is a direct homage to Nosferatu). The first season is bassically a homage to various old horror movies and popculture references. The second season pretty much transitions between that and the real BTVS, building up certain characters and relationship till it all crashes down during Buffy's birthday.

bassically whedon came to meeting with FOX and WB(now cw) execs and siad here i have this idea, give me some money for 12 eps and see how it goes, with written-legal-promise of not meddling into my decisions. They agreed and the show got off on a very strong note for that time of tv shows.

Then the show's budget increased with every season, allowing more massive things to happen, something TVD will never ever get to do.

Then there's more metaphorical thing:

The seasons represent Buffy's life, in most instances, taking up one year of her life. Season1 is her childhood. Cue more adventurous tone, and more clear definition of villain and hero. Then, theoretically, as she ages and goes through problems and tragedies, her real motivations get fleshed out and the chraracters around her get more development, her world around her gets darker and more real too.

And then, the more cheery and child-like world of S1 allows for many emotional clashes with reality of latter seasons :)

Here's a simple hint: even during first season there are certain things that do not quite fit in Buffy's behavior. :)

And yes angel gets the basis of his character in seventh episode of first season called "Angel", however that is just the very top of the iceberg, there's a whole lot more stuff to go through about him(as well as everyone else.)

Also, metaphorically, one of s1 episodes, called "Nightmares" is important, because it foreshadows some of the things as far as 5 seasons latter(since by that time the show was already renewed for 2nd and 3rd seasons) and scratches upon the reasoning behind Buffy's character quite a bit.

@Halde alot of what you say makes sense...that it was low budget and got better as seasons go on. So I hope as I keep watching, that the "cheesiness" goes away, lol.

This might contain a bittie late spoilers

So am i the only who thinks S4-5-6 Xander is a little like Matt in relationship?

They both dated someone who needed to be taught how to be human.

They both treated their girlfriends as if they were the boss, who knew what was best.

They both took almost all the decisions in the relationship.

This is NOT as an all around character because that's not even a question. But i have just watched S5 and I am about episode 10 S6, and Xander is being a douch to Anya. He gives her a ring with the clear promise to marry her, whereafter he then perspone and perspone because it dosen't fit into the premise of present day.

And Caroline even killed a guy and ate him and scrued around with other peoples minds. Anya didn't do this(Matt might not have known, but Caroline acted totally innocent when she told him she was a vampire).

Anyway if we look at how they both acted towards respectivly Anya and Caroline, can anyone else on this thread see the comparision?

The vampire monster face dosen't change and most demons still have a kinda bumpy forhead. It's obvious with the vampires, but they simply needed to make the monsters look scary, and IMO they succeeded in this.

So in some ways BtVS can't be compared with new shows, because today evil people need to look incredible hot and gorgeous. That wasen't needed back then. In BtVS they play much more with actors/tress talent and character than looks(not counting the cloths, but the physcial appearance of the actor/tress.

(Although most of the actors/tress's is hot in BtVS as well, it is not the todays teen model angelic face they all wonder around with. It's grown-ups;))

Yes, considering Xander is pretty much based upon Matt of TVD Books, yes.

However apart from that he is nothing like TVD show matt. The reason he post poned that again and again was NOT because he was afraid OF her. it was because he was afraid of THEM together, and both of them were afraid of THEM together. Given Anya's history of love interests and Xander's history of social life, its not that surprising.

Anya didn't do this

You are right. Anya did worse for far longer time :P

Well I would say that Caleb looked quite angelic, Glory was pretty too. Season 6 Villain was certainly no ugly too and S7 THE villain was verrry pretty for most of time, maybe prettiest of everyone in the cast(given who plays that villain, not surprising)

And I'd say most of that makes sense in BTVS - for most of time you are not encountering some sort of earth-born thing. Most of powerful but not powerful enough things are there from other places, while the most powerful ones look quite good.

And yes, BTVS could be VERRRY scary at times. Gentlemen still give me the creeps, as well as the Moon Purger(that one from season 5), not to mention anything and everything that has to do with hellmouth itself

And main characters did manage to be quite scary at times too. Buffy especially managed to give off a sense of dread and fear around her atmospherically from time to time.(or the kind of feeling that causes you to run the other way). ANd then we have for most obvious reasons Willow. And obviously Giles.

Giles rapefaces were the best.

"would you like me to convince you? *smile*"

They looked pretty, but far from in the same way as today.

Well in present day tv shows people apparantly all have a curse of perfect make up, so they wake up with make up and perfect hair already :)

Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Damon

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.
