Okay this episode was mixed, and Im not liking the pattern!
On the upside, loved that Damon is back to his snarky, bad boy self, not obsessising about Poor Elena and what not! i sure as hell missed him.. I liked what he said in the end to Stefan, that was such a moment. I liked the Matt/Elena moments plus her and Alaric, it was sweet! What a twist the whole ring thing was! I was beginning to despise Elena but they r bringing her back!
On the downside, the whole flashback scenes were a huge letdown, I was expecting more Sage this ep but I guess she'll get more time in the next two eps! Those scenes did not deliver! Not even close! And that sucks cuz usually TVD flashbacks are so rich! Plus, no Kol, blah! They cut that part from the script, Im guessing it was Kol and not Fin who was supposed to be with Sage, but they changed it cuz of fan reaction to Nate Buzolic so now Fin is slated to die or something.. They also could have snuck in some Bonnie/Abbie scenes, missed a huge oppurtunity for character dev..

I pretty much agree with your entire post, but the part about Elena I have been thinking for awhile. Usually I like her character, but the previous two episodes before 1912, I wanted to smack her upside the head. I was also really surprised by how much I liked the Matt/Elena scenes. They have apparently found a purpose for Matt on this show. That purpose is to make Elena more likable and to force her to have honest discussions with someone about her feelings. I would never want them to be together, because that would be the world's most boring relationship ever, but I love them as friends. I also agree with you about the flashbacks, they were a bit of a letdown, but they allowed for the most awesome Damon/Stefan bonding moment, so I don't feel too bad about it.

And elena just goes "now you're just being mean"as if she was scolding a bold child not someone who for all intents killed her best friends mam.Someone said about the defan scenes feeling off?i think that's because the keep telling us these two love each other yet they keep letting a bratty 18 year old get between them.
Elena is annoying, unlikeable and character-less. End of story.
Also flashbacks completely and utterly sucked.
Show, you are NOT Lost. You are NOT BTVS. YOU ARE NOT ATS. YOU CERTAINLY are not once upon a time. Those shows have actual top notch writers and good quality writing, thus they are CAPABLE of making flashbacks integral in revealing and exploring character connections and plot points.
TVD's bunch of writing staff clearly can't even retain INTEGRITY of the storyline with flashbacks, let alone use them to flesh out the storyline and characters.
Dear TVD writing staff , please stop trying to immitate the shows that are miles above what you can do. It does not work and TVD is begining to be way too ridiculous to even watch seriously.

i didn't like this episode !,, it was boring and what annoys me the most is that it could have been easily less boring if... say they'd shown us caroline and bonnie handling the whole abby thing or maybe where's the original and what they're up to or what's Tyler been up to !
Sage was pretty useless in this episode , the whole hype about her appearance wasn't matched at all .
Also Matt and Elena =the most boring scenes in the history of scenes !,,,they really should end up together ,they are equally boring .
I still don't get the point of merideth being on the show !.
the last 10 minutes of the episode was decent ,but other than that it was boring.

I have to say it too... most boring episode ever! Yeah Matt and Elena are perfect for each other... and the flashbacks weren't interesting at all...
To the storyline with the ring... it sounds kind of stupid for the moment... Alaric getting insane from the ressuraction through the ring but it could get interesting if the writers would to something good with it, which probably won't happen...

They cut that part from the script, Im guessing it was Kol and not Fin who was supposed to be with Sage, but they changed it cuz of fan reaction to Nate Buzolic so now Fin is slated to die or something^ THIS is such an interesting theory and it would explain how Damon and Kol knew each other. but if it is true that they changed it, i am so glad they changed from Kol to Finn. Kol and Sage would look ridiculous
