@Cora- that doesn't cut for a diverse cast. TVD doesn't just account for this problem only though. MOST shows are like this.

There are races never shown in media. That's a fact. How come we never see native americans, asians, middle easterns, indians, hispanics, etc? Even though african americans are put in shows, most of the time they are underrated (role wise).

Yeah Michael Trevino is mexican but not a lot of people know that. He looks passable to be white. I think to bring on more diversity in shows, they should show people of different of color. The thing is, being irish or french or american isn't the point of discussion. Ethnicity and race are two different things. Plain and simple the US is VERY diverse. Shows like TVD aren't realistic in displaying society. There are more races than 2-3 races.

I'm korean personally. I rarely see a korean in american media. Nor a native, hispanic, middle eastern, etc. It's really fucking sad.

Even when different ethnicities are included (rarely), for some odd fucking reason there sterotype is bound to be glued to them. It's really disgusting.

Maybe you should educate yourself and not be so hot headed when it comes to topics about racism. It's better to talk about it then leave it closed behind doors. We are living in a society that still is racist. Accepting the truth is the first step in dealing with it.

AMEN Elijah's Hottie.

What really pisses me off the most is people that aren't willing to accept the truth. It surprises me how minorities act like this too. Lol like seriously? We should be sticking together in trying to eradicate racism and these false outlooks by media on everyday society.

People need to educate themselves first before anything. I learned a lot from my sociology classes. A theology class on islam in the US was eye opening enough for me though.

I get the idea behind the thread, but i think we can say it's less racist than almost everything else (everything else that's not deliberately catoring to a certain ethnicity). In my head, it's actually kinda progressive.

That KW is gay is kinda news to me, and i can almost pat him on the back, because just because you're gay doesn't meant eveything you do has to be gay. (Talking about the glee guy here) (although the true blood guy manages to use his gayness to make evetything in TB ultra sexy)

Also, just because Bill is gay, shouldn't make him tolerant of everything else. That's like saying black people shouldn't be homophobes. It's like "dude, you're a fag (insert random derogatory name). You're not allowed to have opinions about vampires or anything, just be grateful that no one's stringing YOU up." So i thought it was cool that they could seperate the issues and not have him as some all-inclusive, uber-tolerant atheist.

And wrt the race thing. TVd is probably the most inclusive show on CW to date. Calling Trevino hispanic is like calling lorenzo lamas hispanic. And calling bonnie black is like calling thandie newton an african. See the point? Not that they aren't, but are they the most representative of the entire body? Perhaps not. Not that we have a black scale, or a chinese scale or a hispanic scale, but be real... How mexican on a scale of 1-10 is Trevino?

But check out anything else on tv and it's worse 9times/10, where there's one single mixed person total, including walk-ons. Are they racist? ... they might be recovering racists... They're trying. you can see the effort.

Catering to another race? Oh, I get it. You mean like the ten thousand shows that cater to just white people right? That has got to be one of the most insensitive and retarded statements to EVER grace this site. Progressive is not throwing one or two minorities into the mix out of twenty in the hopes to create a level of realism in a show that doesn't even come close to existing.

First, REPRESENTATION, a term I used in my post, should ONLY be addressed if you know what I was talking about. The term is used to address the ideas and images that pervade the media and form of communication and culture. Both visual and written. Sociologists, psychologists, and other researchers have agreed that this gives people the right to think about media and communication, an extention of images in a certain form, attaching meaning to it, interpreting it. This happens through representation. ALSO professionals have agreed through research that race is a significant problem in the media...Oh, by the way, that INCLUDES television.

But check out anything else on tv and it's worse 9times/10, where there's one single mixed person total, including walk-ons. Are they racist? ... they might be recovering racists... They're trying. you can see the effort.

They are trying...so we should tolerant the inconsistencies of media representation right? Oh, of course... Perhaps you find that appealing, but some of us do not believe that it is something that should be just simply...tolerated. Ironically enough, according to Dr. Grewal,  culture within itself is a poltical matter. Some things are clearly fixed, evident to the point of being downright pathetic. To say that this is not an issue and we should brush it under the rug is to go against the large amount of evidence accumulated over the years that HAVE PROVEN this is considered a problem.

So what point are you trying to make youngnan?

Good points Real. Since I come from a family with different cultures and ethinicities--well, more than some people--I tend to take the time to listen and look, really look at the patterns and structures of the media. Also, I spent a year researching media representation from a sociological perspective, so it gave me a deeper understanding of the problems we face in society with this issue.

In that time, I have had my fair share of people make excuses for the media's inability to place constraints on the bias interpretation of race and culture. It is very frustrating, but the research continues. I do think dialogue and the field results make it essential to calculate a form of production that doesn't require full personal agenda. Perhaps, in time, we will find this.

Also, that class you mentioned sounds interesting. :)

LOL  Glenna, you have no idea how many times I have come on this site on my phone in the middle of a class and laughed from one of your awesome comments.

Cora wake the fuck up. This show has like 1 black girl while the rest of the 20 something cast are all white.

Cause it is culturally divrse but to YOU ita not. It sounds like a personal problem.

Sounds to me like YOU are the only taking it personal. It's sad that YOU want to defend and excuse the fact that media is bullshit. The cast is not diverse. It doesn't take a retard to see that.

THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING POSTS:

Many producers and writers are not cognizant of how unrealistic shows are when they fail to bring diversity into the equation.

To argue this is not the case, is to insult the history of slavery, discrimination, and every other facet of evil misconceptions that has been intrinsically exercised on this Earth to hurt others.

There are races never shown in media. That's a fact. How come we never see native americans, asians, middle easterns, indians, hispanics, etc? Even though african americans are put in shows, most of the time they are underrated (role wise).

So far black people have been two things:

1. Witches.2. Dead.

Sadly the truth.

Your attitude or disposition on the issue means shit to me. My exact thoughts. Also, LOL.       Something I want to repost:   Maybe you should educate yourself and not be so hot headed when it comes to topics about racism. It's better to talk about it then leave it closed behind doors. We are living in a society that still is racist. Accepting the truth is the first step in dealing with it.   ^win I find it fucked up when you actually learn how people really feel about other races. You will never hear it publicly (ocasionally) but more so behind the scenes. They don't say it outloud but quietly. People need to admit to being racist (or we could run around it and make excuses/lame defense points for it and get nowhere <eye roll>).

Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Damon

Damon: You know what they are? Children. Like lighting a candle's going to make everything OK, or even saying a prayer. Or pretending Elena's not going to end up just like the rest of us murdering vampires. Stupid, delusional, exasperating little children. And I know what you're going to say: 'It makes them feel better, Damon.' So what? For how long? A minute, a day? What difference does it make? Because in the end, when you lose somebody, every candle, every prayer is not going to make up for the fact that the only thing you have left is hole in your life where that somebody that you cared about used to be. And a rock with a birthday carved into it that I'm pretty sure is wrong. So thanks, friend. Thanks for leaving me here to babysit. Because I should be long gone by now. I didn't get the girl, remember? I'm just stuck here fighting my brother and taking care of the kids. You owe me big.
Alaric: I miss you too, buddy.
