Californication Review: "The Apartment"

This week's episode of Californication, called "The Apartment," really made a huge comeback after last week's slump!

In the newest episode, Hank has a string of unsolicited visitors to his apartment, which results in games of hide and seek that are reminiscent of something out of Three's Company - we totally loved this week's episode! Did you? Let us know what you thought after reading our full recap of the episode!

For now, some musings on Hank and his female predicament:

Stacy Koons calls Hank the "girl whisperer," since women fall all over him even when he's such a jackass most of the time. There really is something special about Hank and Hank really nails it on the head when trying to explain to Becca why he behaves the way he does.

The Dean

He did have good intentions with each of these women - with Jackie, he wanted to show her she had potential and could be more than just a stripper, with Jill he wanted her to have self-confidence again, and with Felicia, he wanted her to know that she deserved to be happy. But of course by being with these women and showing them how each of them is special, he's going to have them fall in love with him! Isn't that exactly what every woman is looking for?

But now that he's built up all these women, he's afraid to let them down, it seems. Is that why he's having so much trouble breaking it off with them? He has so many great opportunities to just end things, especially in this episode, yet he doesn't do ANYTHING!

Stacey asks Hank point blank if he loves Felicia - obviously he doesn't love Felicia, and things are falling apart left and right at the apartment, but he just doesn't say anything and waits to be saved by the arrival of Becca and Chelsea. Why doesn't he say anything??? It just doesn't seem realistic or true to Hank's character... it does make sense if the writers are just trying to drag out this storyline a bit further.. but come on!

I can't wait for this story line to come to an arc - let's get Karen back in there because you know she'll be kicking ass and taking names!

Here's a look at a few of our favorite Californication quotes from the hour:

Jackie: No more grinding up on middle-aged hard-ons for me, except for yours of course. | permalink
Rick Springfield: Nothing like the sound of a stripper's head on a hard-wood floor.
Hank: What the f**k is wrong with you?
Rick: What, oh you don't rough 'em up? Well excuse me George Bailey... | permalink
Stacey: You obviously have this thing with women, some very strong connection, that no matter what you do, no matter how big of an ass you are, they seem to respond - you're a goddamn girl whisperer! | permalink

Gina Torres to Play a Witch on The Vampire Diaries

Last week on The Vampire Diaries, Damon tried and failed to resurrect Katherine.

But you didn't think the heartbroken vampire would just give up, did you?

In casting news that also acts as a spoiler, Gina Torres has landed a role on The CW hit. She'll appear on the show's 10th episode as Bree, a witch with a connection to Damon. Look for him to try and get her to pick up where Emily/Bonnie failed last week: accessing Katherine's tomb.

Gina Torres

Torres is a busy actress these days.

She recurs on a pair of other shows: as Stan's wife on FlashForward; and as Vanessa's mother on Gossip Girl. Neither of those roles require witchcraft, however.

Brothers & Sisters Review: "The Wine Festival"

There were six separate story lines intertwining on Brothers & Sisters last night, which always seems appropriate for such a huge family. Also appropriately, some ended well, some did not, while some featured plenty of drama and some none at all.

A lot like real life. Click here for a full recap of "The Wine Festival." Below, we've written a brief review of each of the characters' story lines and why they worked or didn't ..

Kitty & Robert: Kitty's rocking a shaggy, blonde wig these days and Robert is all over that. She worries it's all about the wig, and that he's pretending she is someone else.

But he's not. When she shows him her bald head as a test, he doesn't bat an eye. He loves her for so many reasons that have nothing to do with her hair, he says. Swoon.

Sarah & Luc: Sarah wants Luc to design the label for the Walkers' new wine. Because he is so laid back, he can't fathom why she wants him to commercialize his talent.

Sarah being Sarah, she asks where this is going, how he will get a visa to stay in the U.S., etc. Luc being Luc, he paints ... to paint. He doesn't want her to be his agent.

In the end, she tells him she loves him and will support him no matter what. But he goes back to France anyway. Bad move, Luc. You don't know what you're missing.

Luc and Sarah

Gilles Marini's run came to an end last night as Luc returned to France.

Kevin & Scotty: They're researching the perfect egg donor. Predictably, Scotty wants a healthy kid and that's it, while Kevin goes OCD trying to craft the perfect child.

Saul puts it in perspective with a great metaphor: Like wines, all children are unique, unpredictable and shaped by their caretakers. Kevin lets Scotty pick at random.

Nora & Simon: Our favorite story line of the night, and one you don't see addressed on other shows: Widowed mother of five Nora struggling on the dating scene.

She and Simon are going well, but the age difference clearly bothers her. He tells her it's not going to work as long as she lives in a safe little box. That one hurt.

In one of our favorite Brothers & Sisters quotes, Nora insists to Simon that she doesn't live in a safe little box, but she could embrace more of his attitude as well.

Justin & Rebecca: Justin is stressed over a med school test and can't make time for Rebecca. She can't find the time to tell him she's pregnant. He's, like, so busy.

Please. You're marrying the guy. He has a right to know. Okay, so he said he doesn't want kids three weeks ago. That'll change in two seconds. Man up, Rebecca!

The Wine Festival Picture

The Walkers' wine won big ... until shady Ryan ruined everything.

Saul, Holly & Ryan: After Saul actually loves the new, inexpensive wine and wants to enter it in the local wine festival, Holly is thrilled. This is her last chance to succeed.

She's even more excited when it does really well, and it's looking like her business and personal financial prospects are finally turning around. But Ryan is not as thrilled.

He wants the company to fail, after all. The annoying little sleaze.

After the success of the festival, Ojai is planning to roll out the wine ASAP. But Dennis York tells Ryan if they do, he'll never gain control of Ojai. Ryan needs to fix this, now.

Oh, and fix it he did. Holly and Saul find all the wine drained out of its tanks. Holy crap. Kid better skip town and change his name. It's gotta be obvious who did it, right?

Seriously, that's got to be at least somewhat difficult to pull off, right? This isn't just a box of Franzia where you leave the tap open. Oh, and are there no cameras in there?

Logistical plot holes aside, it was a solid story and episode.

Dexter Review: "Road Kill"

The main plot of this week's Dexter episode appeared to mirror the issue the show is currently having.

Dexter went from trying to kill Trinity to actually saving his life, as Arthur was prepared to commit suicide until his friend/enemy made a last-second save. You can read all about these developments and more in our most recent episode guide.

The same back-and-forth seems to be going on with the series itself. It's not sure where it wants to go with the Dexter/Trinity relationship.

For the majority of "Road Kill," Dexter was stuck on the issue of remorse. Did he feel badly or not after killing an innocent last week? The answer, via Dexter's internal monologue, appeared to be no, but his reaction after learning of his mistake was a resounding yes.

The most intriguing aspect of this season's storyline is how Dexter tries to forecast his own future via Arthur's life. After Trinity tried to kill himself, Dexter wondered: if this how I'll eventually go, following years of pent up sorrow and regret?

A Kill Room

While Dexter's questioning of his own humanity is an interesting dilemma, any relationship not involving the main character is a snooze. Does anyone care about Angel and Laguerta? Is Rita really gonna cheat with her neighbor?

It all feels like filler meant to give Michael C. Hall a break from being in every single scene.

Overall, a mediocre episode. The action needs to pick up, as this week's installment simply felt like a look inside Dexter's head. That's a scary place, but not as scary as kill room that actually gets used.

Check out a few of our favorite Dexter quotes from the hour below:

Trinity: Confession is good for the soul.
Dexter: All the more proof I have no soul. | permalink
Deb: I love you, bro, but sometimes you're a f**king 'tard. | permalink
Dexter: I really do need to stab something. | permalink
Vince: I've almost banged so much tail at those geek fests. | permalink

Don and Betty Draper Are Over

Good luck ever getting Mad Men spoilers out of creator Matthew Weiner.

He's more tight-lipped about his show than anyone on TV.

But in an interview he gave after the incredible third season finale, Weiner did address the future of Betty and Don Draper. How come? Because he doesn't consider this a spoiler. It's so clear, he said...

It’s so unambiguous to me that this marriage is over, but the audience seems to cling to the idea that they should be together because we want to believe in those things. The marriage was not good. It was built on a lie and the lie was exposed. In the end, Don coming clean really damaged his relationship with her, more than the lying, her seeing who he actually was.

Couple at Dinner

I do believe when he says his mother was a 22-year-old prostitute that Betty is looking at something that is very far from what she had planned for herself... That was the whole story of the season. When Henry Francis came on to her… a switch went off in her head of what was missing in her life, which was a true, romantic attachment.

In the end, that combination with her gut feeling that something wasn’t right in her marriage and finding out the truth, they don’t belong together anymore, kids or not. You’ve got to take it pretty seriously when someone’s flying to Reno to get a divorce.

Will January Jones remain on the show as Betty? Viewers will need to wait a long time for that answer.

Coming to The Vampire Diaries: Taylor Swift?!?

Brace yourselves, Vampire Diaries viewers. Producer Kevin Williamson is teasing some possibly fangtastic news...

Asked about his dream guest star, Williamson pointed to the most popular singer on the planet in an interview with E! News this week. He said:

"I'm desperate to have [Taylor Swift] come play a vampire. Wouldn't she make an amazing Kirsten Dunst circa Interview With the Vampire type? I cannot tell you how hard I'm trying to get her - I would kill to have her on the show!"

Do you feel the same? Would you wanna see Swift appear on The Vampire Diaries?

As for former character, Kayla Ewell hinted that Vicki might not be as dead as she seems.

"I'm still under contract," she said. "But that's all I can say... We'll see what happens."

Williamson has been clear that Vicki won't be rescurrected, but you never know. After all, did anyone expect to see Logan's smiling face wrap up the most recent episode?
