Details Emerge on James Franco's General Hospital Role

It's not a rumor and it's not a publicity stunt: James Franco is really coming to General Hospital.

In an interview with TV Guide Magazine, show writer Bob Guza confirms that the actor didn't sign on just to research a film role and that Franco was "fantastic" during his first day of shooting.

James Franco, General Hospital

As for the character he'll play, details have finally emerged about him: appropriate, his name is Franco and he's connected to the mysterious C077X graffiti tag that's been popping up around Port Charles.

Franco (the character) is a psychotic, albeit self-deprecating, artist; fixated on death and connected to Jason Morgan, the mobster played by Emmy-winner Steve Burton.

“Franco is fascinated with Jason and what he does for a living - he thinks they both love death and are essentially the same kind of guy,” Burton said. “But then Jason refuses to meet with him and that’s when things start to go south.”

The movie star debuts on the soap opera on November 20.

Grey's Anatomy Review: "Invest in Love"

Last night's Grey's Anatomy was all about three children - a prematurely born baby, a terminal 10-year-old, and a 15-year-old whose drug use landed her in the ER - in dire straits.

Much like last week, there was a seemingly impossible case on the table, and the emotional stakes were high. Unlike Derek Shepherd, however, Arizona Robbins did not save a life.

But because of the way she carried herself, she may have saved countless lives down the road. How? For a full guide, check out our recap of "Invest in Love." Now, some thoughts:

Before touching on Arizona's big storyline, we must touch on Justin Chambers shirtless. You wish, right ladies? Yup, Dr. Alex Karev was forced to lose his shirt to save a baby's life.

Babies thrive on skin-on-skin contact, especially under duress, and as if Alex whispering to a preemie, "you're not alone," wasn't enough to make us swoon ... him shirtless? Wow.

We liked how Bailey mused that Karev would be good in pediatrics. It's almost like we've heard that before. Oh yeah, we have, three seasons ago, when he was working with Addy!

Oh, Yang

Cristina went rogue last night. It was kind of awesome.

Meanwhile, treating a teen who fell off a roof, Cristina goes rogue in the O.R. and Jackson has her back! She's testing Owen's patience and seems perfectly okay getting reamed out.

After all, she stepped in and performed invasive cardio procedure herself, even though she is technically unqualified and with two attendings screaming for her to stop. Rogue, alright.

Jackson thinks it's hot and later tries to plant a drunken kiss on her. She pulls back, but we're liking the direction this is headed ... a little romantic tension never hurt on this show.

The big star of the episode is Jessica Capshaw's Arizona, who treats 10-year-old Wallace. A proposed operation will only buy him two more months, so Robbins doesn't want to do it.

Until the Chief and a $25 million donation from Wallace's parents persuade her, that is. The surgery goes alright, but complications arise and he dies while Arizona tries to save him.

Arizona Picture

Arizona didn't save a life last night, but came through just the same.

This is where she really shined. Clearly furious with the huge dollar signs in the Chief's eyes, she told him how it is, and demanded to speak to the parents despite his objections.

She did, and given her obvious compassion, the parents decided to give the hospital $25 million anyway. With that money, she can make a lot of magic happen for years to come.

It was also Arizona's birthday, and she cried at the party Callie threw for her. We have to say, we love them together, and not just because they're lesbians. Because they're people.

They're just a great, believable and enjoyable couple to watch on screen who happens to be 100 percent female. Callie was second fiddle to Arizona last night, which was great, too.

Like last week, when it was Derek's storyline and Meredith just supporting him in bed, there doesn't have to be "couple" drama in every episode to make you appreciate one half.

Fringe Review: "Earthling"

After a long playoffs-related break, Fringe returned with its spookiest episode yet.

A shadow from Broyles' past came back to lurk the halls of a Boston hospital, taking its victims in their beds and even following them home. These victims were then turned to dust.

Is the killer a man at all, or something more alien than anything the Fringe team has dealt with? As the team races to stop this latest oddity, Broyles may have stepped on a few too many toes in Washington, putting himself at risk. Read the recap of "Earthling" and then the review below...

What We Liked: How It Looked
The shadow man was one of the coolest villains we've seen thus far on Fringe. Whether sneaking through an apartment, a darkened hospital hall or gliding through security footage, this thing was just plain creepy to look at. The little girl's line at the end - coining the "shadow man" phrase - was a perfect end to a spooky character.

Broyles Photo

What We Didn't: How It Read
It was a key plot point to have the Koslovs be Russian, but c'mon - couldn't big bro Tomas speak English to his comatose brother? It's not like he could tell the difference, and it would have made for significantly less reading on our part.

What We Really Liked: Walter Making Us Laugh
In addition to being one of the best shows on TV, Fringe is also one of the funniest thanks to Walter's off-the-wall outburst, ideas and antics. The choice ones from this episode included his high-tech method of transporting the turned-to-dust remains of Randy back to the lab (in several Dustbusters) and his offering licorice to Agents Broyles and Dunham when they showed up at the Harvard lab. Both worthy of chuckles, another snack we assume Walter keeps on hand.

What We Really Didn't: Randy Making Us Look Bad
An elaborate hoax to trick your wife into thinking you're away on business on your anniversary, then sneaking home to set up the apartment for a romantic dinner? Way to make all the rest of us dudes look bad, Randy.

The Vampire Diaries Review: "162 Candles"

Stefan turned 162 years old this week on The Vampire Diaries - and he celebrated by almost killing his brother!

Read all about it in our recap of "162 Candles." We also got to meet Lexi, though we might not be seeing her ever again.

This episode started out slow, but when the action picked up, it really picked up! Let's review a few of the plot points that worked and a couple that need work:

THIS WORKED: The casting of Marguerite MacIntyre as Sheriff Forbes. She's hard to read, which is always a good thing for a character. Does she really believe Damon has pure intentions? Or is she on to him, at least just a little bit?

Stefan Image

THIS WORKED: The relationship between Stefan and Elena. They're not together, but they're certainly not not dating... if you know what we mean. That's actually how high school relationships often work; and we're glad the show is giving these characters constant interactions and connections, instead of playing the "will they or won't they?" card.

THIS NEEDS WORK: The secondary characters. With the exception of Forbes, it's hard to get into Caroline, Matt or even Bonnie. The first is just your stereotypical cheerleader; the second seems too nice to be real; and the witch storyline has taken too long to develop. Based on the conclusion of the episode, perhaps the latter will now change. And based on a werewolf rumor, perhaps there will soon be another side to Matt.

THIS NEEDS WORK: It's not clear to me why Stefan spared Damon. No one is advocating for Damon's demise, far from it. That guy rules! But Stefan's speech about all the mayhem and death Damon has caused made perfect sense. We know they're brothers, but come on. Once Stefan had made up his mind, as he claimed to Elena moments beforehand, wouldn't he have gone through with it?

Agree with this review? Disagree strongly? Weigh in now in our Vampire Diaries forum.

Also, check out a few of our favorite quotes from the episode:

Stefan: Everywhere that I go, pain and death follow. Damon follows. No more. | permalink
Caroline: I'm worse than shallow. I'm a kiddie pool. | permalink
Damon: Does it get tiring, being so righteous?
Elena: It flares up in the presence of psychopaths. | permalink
Damon: Stefan smiles. Alert the media! | permalink
Stefan: Elena is warm and kind and caring and selfless and it's real. When I'm around her, I completely forget what I am. | permalink

Malese Jow to Play a Love Interest on The Vampire Diaries

Malese Jow has landed a role on The Vampire Diaries.

The actress, who has appeared on Hannah Montana and The Secret Life of the American Teenager, will play Anna; she's described by producer Kevin Williamson as "Jeremy's smart, new friend."

Malese Jow

Following Vicki's death last week, we're pretty sure Jeremy needs more than a mere friend.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Williamson told TV Guide Magazine. “Jeremy certainly turns her head. She gets a crush. It starts in one place and maybe ends someplace else.”

That sounds like The Vampire Diaries we know and love!

Alternative Versions of Olivia and Walter: Coming to Fringe?

Even if you hate the Yankees, you've gotta be thrilled they wrapped up the World Series last night.

As a result, Fox will air a new episode of Fringe tonight, as opposed to the seventh game of the Fall Classic. What can fans expect from this show over the rest of season two?

Sci-Fi Wire spoke to many involved with it and asked that question. Most prominently: will we ever meet an alternate reality version of Walter and Olivia?

"I have that question as well," said Anna Torv. "I'm hoping there is [an alternate Olivia]. But then I don't know... with the discovery of the fact that the Peter here is clearly not from here, then it makes sense that maybe the Walter over there is angry with the Walter here, and that's kind of the whole thing behind [the Pattern]. But I don't know."

Nice to she's as intrigued and confused as we are!

Broyles and Olivia

Joshua Jackson, meanwhile,  is convinced we'll meet another Walter:

"In keeping with the mythology of Fringe, yes, there is a Walternate, and there would be... an alternate mother as well, because, you know, that dimension is so close to our own, that with only minor differences it is identical."

One more question, please, Anna: will Olivia ever meet the Observer?

"There's an episode coming up that is called 'August,' and it sort of deals with the Observer. It's a really, really beautiful, beautiful episode, actually, so I won't say anything more, but that's actually very soon. Yeah."

Coming Up, on The Mentalist...

On tonight's new episode of The Mentalist, Patrick Jane goes to jail.

As for the next couple weeks? Creator Bruno Heller previewed upcoming storylines in a recent chat with TV Guide Magazine. Stop reading now if you prefer to be surprised...

November 12: Jane gets walloped on the head while working on a case at a baseball stadium. As a result, says Heller:

“We have a series of flashbacks showing how Jane was raised as this psychic boy wonder in the morally ambiguous world of traveling carnies. It’s like a Gypsy Rose Lee scenario. Fans will get some very interesting insight into Jane’s character.”

Bosco Pic

Later in the month: As Jane and the CBI team look into a dead body that’s been hidden for two years under the floorboards of a house, Bosco appears at the same resident, seeking a woman that’s been kidnapped.

The pair is forced to team up and, as Heller puts it: “Cue the fireworks.”

Lie to Me Episode Stills from "Fold Equity"

With the World Series behind it, Fox is set to return to regular programming.

Case in point: Lie to Me airs a new episode on Monday night, one that will reveal a lot about Mekhi Phifer’s Agent Reynolds.

Viewers will learn that this character has been hiding something in his past from the rest of the group. Expect sparks to fly, and expect these scenes to take place during "Fold Equity."
