  "Desmond was a passenger on flight 815." I thought it was obvious that Desmond "flashed" there. Although the plane was mid-flight, he was looking for a seat (because he didn't have one already) and he was suddenly there, then suddenly gone, without a trace. So even though the timeline is different in this reality, and Desmond wasn't in the hatch (because the island was on the bottom of the ocean), Des is still experiencing his flashes.
