Mad Men Review: It Turns To Crap

How could people be saying Mad Men is in stride. Lane's wife buying him a jaguar on the day he is fired is just a stupid, overdramatic plot typical of many many other shows. Mad Men used to be better than this contrived crap. Anyway as for the comment about Don not being able to fire Lane, he didn't fire him - he made him resign. Lane could have gone to jail for forging the check and stealing money, Don forced Lane's hand.

Mad Men Review: It Turns To Crap

I am a huge fan of Mad Men, but I am surprised at all of the positive reviews. This show used to be subtle, it used to be about observing people closely, and the writing was always deft and three steps ahead of the viewers. There have been a lot of big dramatic story developments lately that seem off from how the show used to be. Last night was the first time I found the writing predictable, hackneyed, and common. From the empty elevator easter egg of several episodes ago I've been waiting for someone to die. Before this episode, when i saw the previews I guessed this would be Jared Harris' last episode. Then the scene before he got in the jaguar I said, he's going to kill himself. Then when they went to the jaguar I said - the jaguar's not going to work. The point is not that I am smart, it's that the writing has always been unpredictabe and reaked of real life. These last couple of episods have been really soap opera-ish and the writing is clumsier than usual imho. Serioiusly, is anyone going to argue that it was a stupid, contrived plot to have Layne's wife buy him a jaguar the day he got fired. It's just kind of stupid and sensationalistic boring television that can be seen on any other channel in the evening. While there were parts I liked and I still really like the show, I feel like it has slipped. I guess when the plot was about Don's false face/secret identity to the world, it was more involved, with more subtlety giving more of a payoff. Now we are reduced to secondary characters doing familiar sensationalized, overdramatic plots to try and manufacture drama. Hmmm, when is Megan going to become a star actress and Don becomes the less successful spouse in the household - I've been smelling that one the second she left the advertising agency.
