Stephen Hawking could ride that bike. (1/7/2011)
This is one of the funniest shows on TV. I was extremely offended at the “Stephen Hawking could ride that bike” crack. Does the writer that came up with that line have any idea what disease Stephen Hawking has? It is ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Your life expectancy is three years from diagnosis, funny right? During this time the hands and feet may be affected first, causing difficulty in lifting, walking or using the hands for the activities of daily living such as dressing, washing and buttoning clothes. As the weakening and paralysis continue to spread to the muscles of the trunk of the body the disease, eventually affects speech, swallowing, chewing and breathing. When the breathing muscles become affected, ultimately, the patient will need permanent ventilator support in order to survive. The worst part is not being able to communicate with the patent. Every day ALS steals a little piece from its victim. It’s like watching a candle melt away. I lost my brother to ALS eight years ago. He was 43 years old. The bicycle remark was so unnecessary, and I don’t understand how this was even considered funny. All I can say to the writers and actors is: Father forgive them for they know not what they do"
