Dan's a wanna-be, if I understand the reason behind the writing of the book. He always wanted to be ONE OF THEM; it sounds like his goal was to 'infiltrate' and expose their lifestyle. Except--he really wanted that lifestyle, as well--what better way to get a foot in the door, than to date the "IT" girl, Serena.

Elena DID die; and the tethering to her father brought her back. That would break the 'seal' on the house. That's how Katerina got in.
Excellent episode--I like not knowing WHY Elena kissed Damon. I have a feeling I'm not going to like the 'old' Stefan...
