Simmons: I'm not doing it for you. Don't want you all mucking up Fitz's return.

Simmons: Death.
Gideon: That's right, well death is the only thing returning through that portal. Fitz is just an offering to show it the door.

And the entire planet is a wasteland. How that came to be I can't really say. Not in any scientific terms, but my sense, and certainly Will's heartfelt belief, was that the creature is the one responsible. That it caused the desolation.
