The surgical training protocol is officially being changed, people. The bar has been raised. Consider yourselves on notice.

Richard

We're sloppy, just like everybody else. We've been resting on our laurels. You have all been failing. Failing to take initiative. Failing to ask tough questions. Failing to practice your skills. Failing to give opportunity TO practice skills. And I let it happen. So you have not failed. We have failed. Well, it stops, and it stops now.

Richard

I know you all have heard a lot of rumors, and I'm sorry for that. What I'm about to say will be hard to hear, and I'm sorry for that as well. The economic climate is... well you all know what it is. In the coming weeks Seattle Grace Hospital will be merging with Mercy West. I wish I could tell you you'll all survive the merger, but there are only so many jobs. And the board and I have some tough choices to make. I'm on your side people. I'm rooting for every one of you. All I can say is please, be at your very best.

Richard

Paranoia gives you an edge in the OR. Surgeons play out worst-case scenarios in their heads. You're ready to close, you got the bleeder. You know it but there's that voice in your head asking. What if you didn't? What if the patient dies and you could have prevented it? So you check your work one more time before you close. Paranoia is a surgeon's best friend.

Meredith (narrating)

Alex: Oh, he's lost a huge chunk of flesh. I see down to his mandible. We'll need plastics and an ENT consult.
Owen: Left IV looks as if it's clotted off. I need 16 gauge in there.
All the interns: I'VE GOT IT!!!!
Owen: Woah woah woah, what's going on? It's 4 in the morning, is everyone on call?
Cristina: It's the merger. Everyones scared to go home.
Owen: I don't think the Chief meant that people couldn't sleep.
Cristina: It's hard to sleep when your jobs on the line.
Owen: One of you... get as much type specific blood as they'll let you have and meet us in surgery.
Lexie: ME! I GOT IT! I GOT IT! I GOT IT!

Alex: Sloan and Shepherd are scrubbing out of surgery in OR 2, grab them before they leave.
Olivia: Let me know if you hear anything about the merger. Nurses are always the last to know, first to go.

Izzie: Oh Alex. What do you think? Looks real right? My mom sent it to me.
Alex: Ah, what are you doing here?
Izzie: Working.
Alex: Iz, we talked about this. You're supposed to be taking another 3 weeks. Really resting up.
Izzie: I have to come back now before I don't have a job to come back to.
Alex: Iz.
Izzie: I have to show people that I'm not gonna die. Unless I sit alone in that trailer for one more minute. Then I am gonna die. I'm gonna die of boredom.
Alex: Look, Izzie.
Izzie: Seriously. Looks real right? I mean if you didn't know I have cancer, you couldn't know I have cancer. Right?

Derek: Karev, what do you have?
Alex: 16 year old, dirt bike victim. GCS 15 reported before intubation.
Derek: Ok, on my count. Ready? 1...2...3.
Alex: I'm gonna scrub in.
Derek: So, he announces the merger, then he shuts himself in his office all day and refuses to talk to anybody.
Mark: This merger won't affect us. It's just a financial restructuring.
Derek: What do you think restructuring is? Cutting personnel. Are you prepared to lose all the good people? I'm not. Hey, tell Hunt he's good to go. I'll write up a consult later. I have to talk to Richard right now.

Mark: You're tired, you're angry. You're gonna say something you'll regret. Get out of here for a while. Go to the driving range, get a bucket of balls.
Derek: I have a surgery in an hour.
Mark: So take a walk. Grab Meredith, take a walk.
Derek: Meredith won't leave the hospital. None of them will. Everybody's waiting a word from on high. Look, don't tell me Lexie's not worried.
Lexie: Is he in here, cause I've got the... ugh! [falls]
Mark: No, Lexie's worried.

Mark: I think you missed a spot.
Lexie: Ok, you can't tease me about the blood thing because it's not funny. And, if it gets back to the Chief I may as well just pack my things.
Mark: You need to stop worrying about the Chief. All this is in your head.
Lexie: Really? 2002 Milwaukee. 3rd street hospital merged with St Annes. 13 residents were let go. 2004 Nashville women's absorbed Memorial, 9 residents were fired. 2006 Albuquerque.
Mark: Ok, alright.
Lexie: 19 residents.
Mark: Woah, stop. You need to pull yourself together. You deserve to be here. Act like it.
Lexie: Ok.
Mark: I meant later, you know, after you went home and got some sleep.

Intern 1: You're back!
Izzie: I am.
Intern 2: My mom's whole church prayed for you.
Izzie: Thank you.
Steve: It looks really real.
Izzie: I know right.

Derek: We need to talk.
Richard: Look, I'm busy right now.
Derek: Are you making cuts?
Richard: I said I'm busy.
Derek: If you're making cuts in my department you need to consult with me.
Richard: When it's appropriate I'll consult the people I need to consult with.
Derek: People? I'm not people. I'm the guy that saved your ass. When Jennings came to me, you were done. Out of loyalty to you...
Richard: Loyalty? You came to me so you would seem like a good guy before you stole my job.
Derek: Are you making whole cuts or not?
Richard: Look, I said when I'm ready to tell my staff about decisions I will be making I will. When I'm ready. So, don't come barging in here like I owe you. I don't owe you a damn thing Derek. You work for me. I'm still the Chief of surgery at this hospital.
Derek: Then start acting like it!
