After a beloved three-decade long run as Brooke English on All My Children, Julia Barr left the show after an ugly contract dispute 2006.

So you can imagine the surprise of fans when they heard the following news: the actress will appear on the show's 40th anniversay episodes, which air on January 4 and 5.

Other former stars returning for the occasion will be: Kelly Ripa (Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Mateo), Eva LaRue (Maria), Taylor Miller (Nina) and Laurence Lau (Greg). But all eyes will be on Barr.

She spoke to TV Guide Magazine about the comeback in a recent interview. A couple of excerpts follow...

On her original exit: It was not an appropriate way to go. After being on the show for so long the character needed some kind of closure and so did the fans. For whatever reason that didn’t happen. Now, hopefully, it will.

On her return: This is to the show’s credit. It’s a good, lovely, positive thing. I truly appreciate the cast and crew I worked with... for the greater part of the 30 years, I had an incredible time and that was due to so much to the people around me.

As we head into the winter season, here's what fans can expect next week on All My Children...

• David (Vincent Irizarry, pictured) is crushed when he receives Trevor’s DNA results.
• Liza turns down a kiss from Zach.
• Adam and Scott are arraigned. 
• Bailey comes to a major decision after talking to Damon.

A major writing shake-up has gone down on All My Children.

The somewhat controversial reign of Charles Pratt, Jr., which began in June 2008,is over. He's been released from that position, ABC confirms, though the network won't elaborate on the reasons behind the firing.

Reports indicate that former writer Lorraine Broderick will take over, as All My Children transitions to filming on the West Coast.

She served as co-head writer of AMC from 1987-1988 and has also written for Another World, As The World Turns, Days of Our Lives, Guiding Light and One Life to Live.

It's a holiday week, so just three new episodes of All My Children air over the next few weekdays. These developments will take place during them...

• Adam begs Annie to return to him.
• Zach (Thorsten Kaye, pictured) lets his anger get the best of him. 
• Amanda makes a difficult confession to Jake. 
• David gets thrown for a loop.

Sorry, Scott. It won't be a great week ahead for you on All My Children...

• Madison, drugged, struggles to get a message to Jesse.
• Adam tests Scott and Annie.
• Adam tries to make amends with JR.
• Twice the bad news for Scott (Adam Mayfield, pictured).

As previously announced, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos will help All My Children celebrate its 40th anniversary.

But those won't be the only alums making appearances on the special January 4 and 5 episodes of this soap opera. Here's a list of who else is expected to guest star:
