When a homeless man is set on fire while sleeping on a park bench, no one calls 911 and the man dies. A reporter, Ann Farrell blames the NYPD and Frank Reagan for poor policing in the area and not enough surveillance. She later interviews the killer who says he did it as a gang initiation and plans to kill again. Frank wants Ann to turn over the killer's name but she refuses, saying that she has to protect her source. But since the killer said he would kill again, Erin is able to get a subpoena to compel her to turn it over. When Ann refuses, she is put in jail for contempt of court.

Erin thinks she's doing something to help Alex when she reopens the cold case of his mother's murder but realizes too late that she's opened up old wounds for him. With the help of better DNA technology, she is able to rerun the DNA evidence and much to her shock finds that Alex's father killed his mother all those years ago.

Nicky does a school project asking those closest to her what they would tell their younger selves to do differently.
