We met Annie Walker on the pilot episode and immediately learned she is fluent in six languages. We also learned, via a polygraph with the CIA, that she carried on a three-week affair with a man in Sri Lanka a couple years ago and fell in love.
But he ditched her in the middle of the night with a note that said he was sorry, it was "complicated."
Annie is then pulled away from training and taken to CIA headquarters. She meets Auggie, a former soldier blinded in Iraq and now a tech expert. She also meets Conrad, a guy that hits on her, along with Joan the boss of her department. Annie is assigned a task that involved posing as a prostitute in order to gather intel from a Russian spy.
The specifics of the mission aren't important, but this is: Annie proves herself very capable in the field. She takes chances and eventually discovers on her own that there's an assassination plot underway against a Russian author. Her instincts and intelligence pay off, as the CIA foils the plot. This proves Annie to everyone at the agency and she's kept on there permanently.
Here's what else we saw/learned on the pilot:
- Annie lives with her older sister, who can be a bit overbearing and tries to set Annie up with a date. She also thinks Annie works at the Smithsonian.
- Joan is married to Arthur, another boss at the CIA. She thought he was cheating and used company resources to prove otherwise. Arthur is busy dealing with possibly organization leaks, as a reporter keeps coming up with scoops.
- The man Annie fell in love with is named Ben. At the end of the episode, he is somehow the guy that saves her life and kills the man with whom she was fighting, though Joan tells Annie this was a fellow agent and it all happened quickly. Viewers then see Joan and Arthur discuss how Ben Mercer came out of hiding as soon as they brought Annie in. He appears to be a bad guy they are tracking and now using Annie to help capture, unbeknownst to her.
The episode concludes with Ben outside Annie home, in his car, looking at the bracelet he bought on vacation with her years ago.
