You have to admit, it was pretty clever indeed for Steven Moffat to latch onto the idea of Clara as The Doctor to the extreme he did in...
Doctor Who Season 8 introduced us to Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. He took over from one of the most popular Doctors of all time, Matt Smith. Coming with his regeneration was Clara Oswin Oswald, the Impossible Girl, who was formerly Eleven's companion. Even Twelve admitted that he thought he might have had romantic feelings for Clara when he was Eleven, and that it wasn't Clara's mistake in thinking of their relationship like that, but his own.
Immediately upon his regeneration, Twelve did what he could to distance himself emotionally from Clara, calling her names and pointing out her mannish body, etc. As a result of his newness as The Doctor and Clara's experience, there is an interesting dynamic between the two in Doctor Who Season 8 with Clara having a stronger and almost more powerful and persuasive persona than The Doctor himself.
Early in the season, The Doctor meets with the Daleks and questions whether or not he is a good man, something his encounter with the Daleks proves to be very fruitful at explaining. We also meet a new character, Missy, who apparently runs Heaven. That's a completely new thing for Doctor Who and together with Clara's visiting The Doctor as a small boy makes one wonder if Twelve really might be the last regeneration of this particular Doctor.
