Entourage Series Finale Review: Too Good To Be True?

Cue Boyz II Men's "End of the Road." Or Led Zeppelin, that'll work, too.

I can't believe Entourage is over. Oh wait, that's right, it's not. They should've called this episode "The End...Until We're Done Shooting the Movie." But, luckily for us, this finale was everything the audience hoped it would be. When the credits first rolled, I had a huge smile on my face - and then I thought about it for a while and turned it over in my mind.

The longer I contemplated, the more a question bobbed to the surface: If something seems too good to be true, is it?

Let me start out by saying, if one more person uses the word "Bromance" to describe this series, I'll gag. I do, however, think that talking about genuine, enduring friendship - the kind that we cultivate as kids and hopefully remains pristine throughout life - is totally appropriate for this finale. And for the series, for that matter. In trying to decide if I thought that this was a great episode of Entourage, I had to first nail down when exactly it was that this show was at its best?

When Ari was on the war path and terrifying employees, that's when. When E was less slick and Hollywood-ized and they were still satirizing the kind of backroom deals the town is famous for, that's when. And when Vince and his loyal brood were busy damage-controlling the debauchery they caused between the parties, the women and the parties, that's when.

So, if that's the case, then can a finale that essentially told us what we wanted to hear really be considered great? Yes. When the dialogue and antics were reminiscent of the glory days of this show, and the moments were genuinely endearing, then I argue that the answer can still be "yes," even if parts of it were imperfect.

What parts, you ask? For starters, let's call a spade a spade here. Entourage was never intended to be the thinking man's show. HBO wasn't going for anything philosophical and profound with this one. We love it because it's entertaining. So to suddenly start talking about character growth and symbolism would be inauthentic, and a disservice, in my opinion. Whereas most of my reviews are the Gospel according to Me, I'm curious to hear what our readers made of this finale. I have a feeling it'll be a mixed bag.

I have no problem with the way Ellin, Wahlberg et al. left off with Drama or Turtle's storylines. In fact, Drama could bet anything on his career right now (balls crossed or not) and he'd still come out on top, he's in that good of a position for once. Likewise with Turtle, we may still see him as a pot smoking "valet," as Drama called him, but he's using his street smarts for good and he may out-earn them all one day. It's Vince and Ari where I ultimately get stuck.

If they spent so much time convincing us what a horrible, snobby, academic elitist Sophia was, how are we supposed to believe that she suddenly joined Team Vince and agreed to get married?

I didn't need them to develop their romance further, I just think the Sophia they built her to be wouldn't have been wooed by him sending her a compilation of adoring ex-girlfriend testimonials; the move would've repelled her. Vince is damn charming, and those eyes are impossible to say no to (just ask Sloan) but even he couldn't win her over that quickly. She would've found him abhorrent and vain. Unless Vince is to sex what Michael Phelps is to swimming, in which case say no more.... and dive right in, girl.

Either way, our Vince doesn't belong with a wedding ring on his finger, so the movie version will likely begin with Vince and Sophia pulling a Britney Spears-esque 55 hour marriage in ol' gay Paree. Or him opening up an all-cardigans store. One or the other.

As for Ari and Mrs. Ari (or Melissa as they now throw her name wildly about) I am similarly unconvinced by their ending (ahem, fake ending, because this is obviously just a place holder until the movie picks up where they paused). Why is it that Ari, who is spectacularly obnoxious and no holds barred in all other areas of his life, is a wuss when it comes to his wife? This woman must have lady parts made of pure gold, as readers have remarked in the past, in order to render Ari so benign all the time. Or it could be her flawless ass. I may not like her character, but I have to hand it to Perrey Reeves for giving all other women a complex after a lengthy tight shot of her posterior. Damn. Maybe Ari will be able to sustain his Blackberry-less life in Italy...

Wait, who are we kidding? No he won't. That's why, swelling opera ballads or no, that romance cannot survive him suppressing who he really is to make her happy. We know Ari loves his family, but Dana was a better fit for him, bottom line. It's great that Ari has been painted as a hopeless (if sometimes clueless) romantic, but people change from their 20s to their 40s, and who he was then isn't who he is now, a fact that Mrs. Ari just doesn't grasp. (PS, his kids suck, please leave them off every episode, series finale or not.)

What Ari did get right, however, was leaving things in Lloyd's capable hands. I want Lloyd to turn into the Great and Powerful Oz of gay television agents. And opera singing trio managers. And president of argyle sweater vest-wearers everywhere. We hadn't seen Lloyd this assertive since he quit and left Ari's car on the freeway. Yay for Lloyd, and for under-appreciated employees everywhere.

Last but not least, we have E and Sloan. Despite her irritating ways this season, I actually like them together, so I'll chalk her bitchiness up to pregnancy hormones and leave it at that. I cannot wait to see Terence pursue E like the pocket-sized, red-headed stepchild that he is (kidding...KIDDING!) and genuinely hope that they all live in a house together, a la Three Men and Two Little Men...and Sloan. Since she is, after all, carrying "their baby." Priceless. And to think, we have Vince to thank for all of this. Would we expect any less from the golden boy they built a series around? Pshhht! Never.

When all is said and done, even though I think that Vince's function was less to be a person of depth and more to be the vehicle that binds them all together, he came through, just like the boys from Queens have done for each other all along. I may not believe in everything that Entourage underscores from within the Hollywood bubble, but I do believe in friendship (cheesy, I know) and this show has always been about brotherhood. And boobs, and tequila, and cocaine benders and race car driving...but brotherhood, too.

So, even though at times it was a little sappy, or Ari's cry face got a little ugly, I can stand behind most of the moments in this series finale, if not every single one. Here's hoping that Entourage 2.0 will be better than the Sex and the City movies, or the second one at least.

Now let's hug it out, bitch.

Entourage Series Finale Promo: Friends Forever!

It started off slowly, but the final season of Entourage has picked up a bit over the last few weeks, as it all leads to this Sunday's series finale.

Is the event a bit anti-climactic because we all know a movie is in the works? Sure, but eight seasons is eight seasons. This still marks the end of an era on HBO.

The installment itself will find Vince taking an unexpected step with Sophia, while Ari and Mrs. Ari work on their issues and Vince, Drama and Turtle urge Sloan to forgive Eric. None of that is shown in the newly-released, simply trailer below, however. Check it out now:

Entourage Review: "Second to Last"

To quote Uncle Jesse from my Full House days, "WHOAH BABY!"

Eric, Eric, Eric. See what happens when you spend too much time nailing step moms? You turn your ex-flames into actual moms. That is, if Sloan decides to lay claim to E's vertically challenged baby and the impossibly short arms he/she will inevitably have. Sigh.

But at least everyone else in the wolf pack seems to be on an honest to goodness upswing these days. It's about time Entourage knocked one out of the park.

Thank goodness the action on "Second to Last" was more creative than its title. If I kicked off this rundown with anything other than the E/Sloan, ahem, development, I'd be remiss, so here goes:

Johnny Galecki's hair was really starting to bother me; Melinda's satin sheets and cougar-like grin were equally creepy; and Scott might've been right on the money when he called E a "little b*tch" because I'm assuming he was referring to Eric's couple's glamor shot screen saver. However, it showed that E still isn't over Sloan - duh - and maybe that means they have a snowball's chance in hell to fix things before she takes her trust fund east of the Mississippi.

Even though she's been really testy lately, I'd still like to see them get back on track. Sadly for E, Terence will probably reduce him to a red-headed stain on the carpet next week. Either way, it wasn't a terribly shocking twist in the plot, but a fun one nonetheless.

Another couple I'd been rooting for was Ari and Dana. Say it isn't so, Ari! I really, really, really (X 10,000) liked them together. Their banter was so sweet, and the fact that Dana was more sad than bitter about losing Ari shows she understands him. I'm still mourning the death of what could possibly have been the cutest power couple to hit L.A., and hoping that next week Mrs. Ari gets hit by something else (a bus, perhaps?) to prevent him from going back to her and her nagging ways.

I loved how Dana's advice about Mrs. Ari was so honest and simple - she's looking for something you're not giving her, figure out what it is. Even though things are getting really complicated in the Gold household, it's always smart to remember that what's at the core is perfectly uncomplicated. Also, I love how Ari surfs extremes. One second he's blubbering over how even the miner had a dog of his own, and the next he's threatening a room full of agents with cleaning tanning beds in "f*cking Rancho Cucamonga." Don't fret, Ari, maybe Phil Yagoda will get you a German Shepherd from his now financially-thriving charity.

Speaking of which, all hail Johnny Drama, king of C-list television projects! Even though Ari compared him to a special needs child, I still think he's a worthy cause to believe in and will end up rocking his new Movie of the Week. Plus, he showed his loyalty in delivering Vince's video to Sophia the Bore. PS, don't think we didn't catch that snarky little comment about Vince needing to read the Wall Street Journal because he's not smart enough for you, Sophia. Maybe condescending to people is cool in your country, but here it just makes you look like an uptight snob. I'd feel better about Vince going all Ghosts of Girlfriends Past for her if he was putting his efforts into someone who deserves it, but I'll reserve my official judgment on her until next week's finale.

Turtle's looking a lot hotter these days. Maybe it's because he lost a ton of weight. Or maybe it's because his phone is loaded up with A-Rod and Mark Teixeira's phone numbers (not to mention Amar'e, Melo and Eli Manning's digits). Or, maybe it's because he showed what a solid guy he is when he pleaded Vince's case to Sophia. Nah, who am I kidding? It's the $4 million he just scored. Well played, Vince, maybe you're not so stupid after all.

Now Turtle can stop clearing bongs and start clearing checks (Okay, he'll still clear bongs) and watch the money roll into his new restaurant. I'm not a big fan of Gina De Luca and her underbite, but I hope landing a killer space can sufficiently "impress" John and her enough to trust Turtle from here on out. Either way, Turtle - and the rest of them - are ballin' out these days.

And I, for one, am pretty damn excited to see how they're going to tie off this series next Sunday. Here's hoping it's with a big, Lloyd-shaped bow.

Entourage Exclusive: Jonathan Keltz on Satisfying Series Finale

Jonathan Keltz plays Jake Steinberg on Entourage. How did the actor react when he learned he'd landed the role of Ari's assistant?

"I did about 37 backflips," the actor told me over the phone.

Keltz said he was "possibly the biggest fan of the show," when he got the casting call. "Me and my buddies would always get together to watch... I was originally meant to be in just one scene and I didn't even tell anyone so they'd be surprised when I showed up on screen."

Two years later, Keltz has spent plenty of time sparring on screen with Jeremy Piven. He admits it was "intimidating" to star across a three-time Emmy winner at first, but:

"Jeremy and I got along very well. I showed up to do my job, prepared and ready to throw down. I think that was always appreciated and our scenes have always been a blast."

So, with two episodes remaining, what can Keltz tell us about the series finale? Not much. But he does say viewers need not worry about turning off their TV sets in disappointment.

"The fans are really gonna be be happy," he said. "I know that because, as a fan, I was happy. It's remisicent of the first season. Really about the guys and their relationships. Everyone will be coming back together for a really nice ending."

Entourage Review: "The Big Bang"

Looks like there's trouble brewing for Vincent "Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful" Chase.

Nah, not really. He's just unhappy because the Vanity Fair story was completed and apparently Sophia struck a nerve. I mean, all she did was tell the world he's as deep as a puddle - correction: an insecure, womanizing puddle - and he freaks out. What's wrong with that? I'll tell you what's wrong with that, Sophia. Nobody messes with our Vince!

You basically called him stupid to his face. Then, you tried to use your fancy accent and your sophisticated finance-y words to distract him from it. It was the old "Look Over There It's My Super Important Brilliant New Interviewee... And Something Shiny, Look!" move. It's the oldest trick in the book. Well, we're not buying it, Sophia, and now you've gone and given him a complex about it. Nice job.

In truth, she's probably not wrong that Vince isn't exactly the hard-hitting relationship type, but that doesn't mean he's not capable of one. It also doesn't give her permission to mock him about it to his face, that's cold. At least he'll look good on the cover of the magazine, though - the man can rock a tuxedo.

Elsewhere on "The Big Bang" Ari had it out with Bobby Flay... again. Is it me or was that the first time they've ever revealed Mrs. Ari's real name? When he called her "Melissa," I almost dropped the remote. It's been so secretive for so long that I thought for sure it'd end up being something more exotic, like Shakira. Or Beyonce.

Ari better start calling in favors, or set up a lemonade stand - pronto - or else he may lose his company. On the one hand, I'd like to see his wife show a shred of decency and not try to destroy him financially. But on the other hand, I'd like to see him get creative with bailing himself out. It would've been amazing if Beverly D'Angelo's character had been the one to give him the cash, but maybe I'm just partial to her because I have a soft spot for National Lampoon's movies. Either way, let's see less of Mrs. Ari and her "barbecuing boy toy" and more of Dana Gordon. I like Ari too much to see him so sad every week.

In other news, if Scott knows what's good for him, he'll heed Eric's threat and drop Johnny Galecki as a client (it would help if E were a little more intimidating in stature, but still...) Not that having him off the roster will keep Sloan from finding out E boldly went where HER FATHER has gone before, but at least it'll prove a point. Then we'll really see who's the bigger man in Hollywood.

My money's on E because it's been years since Galecki bedded Darlene Conner, and does anybody even really watch The Big Bang Theory anyway? Didn't think so. I can't lie, though, I'm pretty excited to see what happens when Sloan finds out about Melinda Clarke. I think she could take E in a fight if it came down to it, and it might.

As for the Turtle story line, I think it's Doug Ellin's way of fitting in as many celebrity cameos as possible this season, which is kind of cheap, but mostly awesome (if a little gratuitous at times). Amar'e Stoudemire and Mark Teixeira will be making appearances down the line, for example. Not that David Spade doesn't cut it, but the more big clams Don Peppe's brings onto the screen the better! Also, Turtle's really cute when he gets excited about something, so I hope the restaurant takes off.

Finally, we have Johnny Drama and his motley crew of supporters. It's no secret that I'm not Dice's biggest fan, but I have to hand it to him for going with his gut and getting himself and Drama the compensation they deserve. I guess this means Billy can afford to put maple syrup on his table now (nice touch using his kids for sympathy, by the way) and also that Dice can afford a nicer apartment. Which he should buy immediately.

If all goes well for Drama, he could be back in the television limelight again soon. We're all rooting for you, Drama. We're also alll (or at least I am) rooting for Lloyd to put in a little more face time. I was pleasantly surprised to see him in the fold again this week, but I won't be totally fulfilled until the man gets a spin off of his own.

I'm sure we won't get to the point in the plot where Vince films Airwalkers before the end of this series, but perhaps we can see the following: Lloyd conquer the television management world, E reunite with Sloan (or kill each other, whichever comes first), Ari find love again (Team Dana!), Drama's series take off, Billy wear a pirate costume again (pretty please, it was awesome), and Turtle become LA's foremost culinary entrepreneur.

But really, I'd settle for Lloyd getting his own series. Just saying.

Entourage Teaser: Will Vince Land the Cover?

Drama took a brave step this week on Entourage, while Vince set his sights on a Vanity Fair reporter. Read our review of the latest episode NOW.

What is on tap for this Sunday? On an installment titled "The Big Bang," you can look forward to...

Ari receiving disturbing news from his divorce lawyer.

Eric receiving a gift from Melinda Clarke... and a shock from Johnny Galecki.

Vince dealing with the fallout from his interview.

Turtle meeting his new business partners.

Entourage Review: "Motherf*cker"

So that's what a flat screen TV looks like if you smash it. I've always wondered.

Ari, Ari, Ari. You win some, you lose some. Though I would never cheer for the dissolution of one's marriage, it's a bit of a relief to finally have Mrs. Ari pull the trigger and file for divorce. After all, her incessant yelling every week was getting hard to bear. He could never please her, even though he nearly pulled off an introduction to Taylor Lautner for crying out loud.

Teenagers would practically commit murder to shake his abs... I mean hands. So if Ari could've made that happen, he would be a contender for Coolest Dad on the Planet. Let's see Bobby Flay top that one. With what, a meatball bust of Robert Pattinson's head? Pshht, please.

Luckily for Ari, he didn't have to lick his wounds for too long before Dana forgave him. Plus, she probably stopped him from pulling a Tommy Lee on that hotel room, too. The fact that they have history makes her one of the only suitable women to step in to a post-marriage meltdown. Dana gets Ari's lifestyle, and she doesn't castrate him every time he does something wrong. So even though he's technically down one nuclear family, he's still kind of winning in that regard. Yes, I realize that's a stretch.

Next up on "Motherf*cker," we have the Scott, E, Drama, Dice saga. Drama might be the only honest man in Hollywood, and when he offered to give some of his salary to get Dice back, it was beyond endearing. Granted, it's no king's ransom, but Dice appreciated the gesture. Then, he scoffed at it. Jerk.

In the end, however, Drama took a brave, albeit suicidal, step to force the network to bring Dice back. I'm pretty sure there's not enough weed in California to take the edge off of that decision, Phil, toke away my friend. I really, really hope it lands in Drama's favor. Like E said last week, it always works out for them in the end, so I have to believe that Johnny's Bananas will restore both Drama and Dice to their former (C-list) glory. Plus, Billy is hysterical and I kind of want to see him flip out when he finds out.

Speaking of flipping out, Sloan is going to spontaneously combust when she finds out E took the title of this episode to a new level. MILF, it does a body good apparently. Not that Melinda Clarke isn't stunning, but no amount of booze or commiseration should be siren song enough to actually bed your ex's (former step-)mother. Freud would have a field day with this one, I'm sure. Even though I'd really like to see E and Sloan work things out, if she finds out that E took down mommy dearest, that'll effectively flat line all hope of a reconciliation. At least Clarke got a manager out of the deal, but if I were her I'd request Scott instead. He's way more fun.

And, though it's nice to see Vince work his post-rehab charm to woo the ladies, he should probably not set his sights on a woman who could take him down in 3,000 words or less. Even though the Vanity Fair writer was a regulation hottie and went to that "pretty good school" Oxford, she's still forbidden fruit, Vince. He was right to smooth things out and re-do the interview, and it also reminded us all that his character has more depth than we see each week.

The two most implausible things about that whole set up were:

Sofia was a knockout - most writers do not fit that bill, trust me.

She drove a ridiculously nice car. We are all, for the most part, notoriously impoverished, therefore could never afford such wheels. Not even on a Vanity Fair writer's salary, but nice try Doug Ellin.

I'm curious to see what kind of story comes out of Vince's interview (or if she finally gives in to his advances), and I'm also waiting to see Turtle knock it out of the park with the Don Pepe's project. Entourage is at its best when Ari's cracking skulls, Vince is banging chicks, or Drama's life is melting down. I'd like to see two of those three pan out, but so far so good with this season taking the action in a better direction.

Now if only we could get a little more Lloyd in there, it'd be bliss.

Entourage Review: "Whiz Kid"

It's about time, Entourage!

Last night's episode was utterly brilliant, from beginning to end. After weeks of waiting patiently for this season to heat up, this week the action took off like a shot ... through Carl Ertz's head.

What, in poor taste?

But before we get to the business of Vince's, er, business, we have the story of Ari and Dana Gordon. Not to root for the Gold's marriage to fail, but I really like him with Dana.

They're like an adorable, blackberry-wielding power couple. With potty mouths and lots of intimidated employees. The more we're shown how far gone Ari's marriage is, the easier it gets for us to wish he was free of the yelling and was just happy.

Except what would make him happiest is to have his family back. Oh the conflict...

At first when he was sitting in Bobby Flay's restaurant with Dana, I almost thought she was aware of the situation (because, as Shauna said, everyone knows who's buttering Mrs. Ari's bread these days). But, then it became clear that she would never have allowed herself to be used in such a way, and when she sped off I wanted him to go after Dana.

Obviously he can't fight for both women, but I wish he'd figure out which one he wanted and then dig deep for whatever fight is left in him at this point. When Ari told Vince, "I've got nowhere to be," it was a sad and genuinely vulnerable moment. Oh how the mighty fall, Ari. Hopefully we haven't seen the last of Dana, though, and they can put down the blackberries and call a truce.

The real action on "Whiz Kid" was in Vince's pants. Literally. When Drama tried to get them to all drink vinegar it was a sign of how desperate their situation was, even if he is the champion of "secreting substances out of his body." Ew. If Vince had done anything shady in Ertz's house, that would've been one thing, but for him to face having his career (and freedom) jeopardized for taking a few hits of weed would've been a crying shame.

Luckily for him, Billy - the straightest arrow of them all these days - swooped in to save the day. Wasn't he supposed to be done with all the trouble? Call me naive, but I didn't realize that such a device actually existed nor did I have any idea what Billy was referring to at his house. I actually gasped out loud when Vince whipped it out in the men's room. A-ma-zing.

Though E always has to be the voice of reason, the fact that he didn't get pissed (pun intended) when Vince revealed he never took his fake junk off shows that he's still more of a friend than a manager. Granted, we could've probably all done without seeing the prosthetic penis being tossed about like a phallic hot potato when they found out he passed the test, but this is the kind of content we live for on this show.

Vince is right - this chapter is closed. It's time for them all to move on to clearer skies and bigger things. Maybe not everyone's ascent back to the top will be as easy (cough *Ari* cough) but with Air Walkers approaching, Turtle's new restaurant venture and Drama's series kicking off, it seems promising that the boys from Queens will get their feet under them again. I, for one, can't wait.

Entourage Review: "One Last Shot"

What a depressing episode.

First, Turtle gets politely pushed aside from a project he helped launch. Granted, no one was taking money out of his pocket, rendering him obsolete? Brutal. Alex not having the respect to break up with him in person was even worse, a total dick move. Way to reinforce the “women are shady” stereotype, Alex. Thanks for making the rest of us look bad.

No matter, though, Turtle will land on his feet. He always does. Time and time again Entourage has shown Turtle to be loyal, resilient and independent in his entrepreneurial endeavors... in between smoking copious amounts of weed, sure. But he’s still a stand-up guy.

When Turtle refused to leave Vince alone at Carl Ertz’s house and ultimately broke down the door (what’s the matter, Vince, afraid you’ll break a nail?) to find Ertz dead, I was almost relieved he was there to help Vince handle it all. I’m not sure how much help he can be when news breaks that Vincent Chase was involved in a coke-fueled suicide, but we’ll see how that all pans eventually.

Elsewhere on "One Last Shot," Dice did NOT land on his feet. Thank God he will not be returning to the screen any time soon. I couldn’t bear to see his crazy sideburns or hear him drop any more F-bombs; it was just too much. And who knew he borrowed his apartment from an early 90s music video. Neon, frosted glass and leopard print? Maybe Dice should’ve spent some time redecorating. He’ll have plenty of free time now, that’s for sure.

The move to swap him out for Jamie Kennedy’s awful Dice impersonation was classic Hollywood damage control, but it also seems like it may make Drama’s one big chance at career resurgence stall before it even leaves the gate. I hope I’m wrong. Or else I hope there’s another role out there where he gets to wear a Viking hat again. Either way.

As a side note: The permanent addition of Scott as a series regular(ish) was a strong move. He’s become one of my favorite Entourage men and perhaps the only one with the potential to bring the boys back to their roots of debauchery. If E’s smart, he’ll stick with Scott, if for no other reason than to let him kick up a little trouble in his social life. If the best way to get over somebody is to get under somebody else, Scott is brilliantly equipped to help him facilitate this mission. If, of course, E ever decides to use Scott to his full, sleazy d-bag potential.

We then move on to Ari trying to get his mojo back after years of being out of the dating scene. He’s like a romantic fossil. Covered in cobwebs. An analog phone, if you will.

On the one hand, it’s nice to see Ari so lovably clueless - but on the other, it’s no surprise that he reverted back to something familiar (i.e. Dana Gordon) to make him feel confident again. I actually like them together, but if Mrs. Ari finds out he’s moved on, it will definitely signal the death rattle for their relationship, making for some interesting therapy session content.

While it would be fun to see Ari sack and pillage all of Hollywood as promised (“women will fall and men will start wailing”) it wouldn’t feel authentic. We’re going to be rooting for Team Gold to reunite until the very last episode I surmise.

Viewers will also probably be rooting for Vince to get his image back, Drama to get his career back and Lloyd to rule his own pocket square-wearing media empire. Or maybe the last part’s just me. Whatever. Regardless, they’ve now used up almost half of this season getting the ball rolling, and practically ruined this episode by making it Dice top-heavy. Can next week turn things around?
