Alternative Versions of Olivia and Walter: Coming to Fringe?

Even if you hate the Yankees, you've gotta be thrilled they wrapped up the World Series last night.

As a result, Fox will air a new episode of Fringe tonight, as opposed to the seventh game of the Fall Classic. What can fans expect from this show over the rest of season two?

Sci-Fi Wire spoke to many involved with it and asked that question. Most prominently: will we ever meet an alternate reality version of Walter and Olivia?

"I have that question as well," said Anna Torv. "I'm hoping there is [an alternate Olivia]. But then I don't know... with the discovery of the fact that the Peter here is clearly not from here, then it makes sense that maybe the Walter over there is angry with the Walter here, and that's kind of the whole thing behind [the Pattern]. But I don't know."

Nice to she's as intrigued and confused as we are!

Joshua Jackson, meanwhile,  is convinced we'll meet another Walter:

"In keeping with the mythology of Fringe, yes, there is a Walternate, and there would be... an alternate mother as well, because, you know, that dimension is so close to our own, that with only minor differences it is identical."

One more question, please, Anna: will Olivia ever meet the Observer?

"There's an episode coming up that is called 'August,' and it sort of deals with the Observer. It's a really, really beautiful, beautiful episode, actually, so I won't say anything more, but that's actually very soon. Yeah."

John Noble Previews Upcoming Observer Action on Fringe

Fringe viewers won't just learn more about The Observer as season two moves ahead; they'll meet multiple Observers!

What else can fans expect in this department?

John Noble (Walter) spoke to Fancast about the storyline during a recent set visit.

The Observer Photo

“Somehow along the line, because of Walter’s experiences, because of things he’s done, he’s been able to make communications with The Observer, whatever The Observer is – I’ll leave that for you to think about.

"That will continue, and that will become far more dense as the season goes on, as to what the role of The Observers are, and also Walter’s relationship with them. In terms of the teaser as to why Walter’s photo is in [The Observer's briefcase]: my feeling is because he’s their only live contact. The rest - they should not and cannot make contact with other people. And if they do – at their peril, which will also be revealed.”

Assuming (and hoping!) the Yankees defeat the Phillies in Game Six of the World Series tomorrow night, Fringe will air a new episode on Thursday.

The End of William Bell on Fringe?

Just a couple weeks after his latest appearance as William Bell on Fringe, Leonard Nimoy has bad news for fans:

He might never return to the show.

"I've done three appearances for them. I don't know if I will do a fourth," the actor told The Los Angeles Times this week.

Nimoy's Bell most recently appeared in "Momentum Deferred" an episode that revolved around Olivia's return to her alternative reality.

"They've asked me to do more, but we have to talk about where the character is going," Nimoy said. "So far my character and my appearances have been used to lay in information about this alternate universe and the experience of being in this other world. And that's OK, but I don't know yet what plans they have for really developing a dramatic story for the character. I'm waiting for a conversation about that."

Whether or not he appears on screen again, the star has nothing but praise for the show.

"They do a great production job. They have great story hooks, terrific production values and very interesting performances."

Fringe Casting Update: Sebastian Roché As The Leader

As previously reported, former General Hospital star Sebastian Roché has landed the role of a major villain on Fringe.

We can now confirm the dangerous character he'll be portraying: Roché will simply be known as The Leader, a mysterious humanoid soldier from another universe whose goal is to gather information about Olivia - and, possibly, start a war.

That can't be good.

Roché was recently seen on the short-lived CW series The Beautiful Life and on the previous season of 24.

Fringe Question of the Week: Where is Agent Jessup?

Prior to this season of Fringe, it was announced that Meghan Markle would be joining the cast.

But the actress' character of Special Agent Jessup has only been seen briefly and many fans are wondering what her status is. Entertainment Weekly turned to producer Jeff Pinkner for the answer. He said:

“There was never any length of time [assigned to her stay]. There’s no end date. She’s an available tool in our toolbox and we’ll use her as we see fit.

[But] we’re really trying to tell stories about our main characters… we want to get deeper with them, so we don’t have a lot of time to go into the FBI. I think our fans really want to get to know our [core] characters more and that’s what we’re endeavoring to do this year.”

First Look, Listen: Trent Reznor Featured in Fringe Promo

This is very cool.

While a new Fringe episode won't air until November 5, the show premieres a new promo spot tonight... featuring Nine Inch Nails singer Trent Reznor!

As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, the drama approached Reznor and asked him about using the song "Zero-Sum" in a commercial for the series. He did them one better:

Reznor recites lines of dialogue by William Bell during the ad, a favor he did for free.

“We offered him compensation, and he said, ‘No, no, I just want to have fun and be part of something cool,’” said producer Jeff Pinkner. “How often do you get the chance to work with somebody like that?”

Not often. Follow this article's jump for an early look at the promo.

Fringe Episode Stills from "Earthling"

Fringe Producers Peer Ahead, Answer Questions

Considering that Fringe is based around alternative realities, it's safe to assume viewers crave answers about a number of topics and developments.

With that in mind, TV Guide went straight to the souces: producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman. The pair dished on a number of show-related topics this week, from the other Walter to multiple Observers.

Enjoy these excerpts...

On interactions between "over there" Walter and William Bell: "Over there Walter may have never worked with William Bell. He might have gone to medical school instead of being a scientist. But it's very possible that over there Walter is working with over there William Bell -- and in the same field." - Pinkner

Back to (Alternate) Reality

On meeting Peter's mom: "You're definitely going to get answers about Peter's mother this season. That element will be very illuminating and also a fantastic journey for Peter." - Wyman

On two versions of the same person meeting: "They might not like each other. But it's not like one of them has to explode. This isn't a time-travel show. There are no philosophical or physical conundrums with two people meeting. Somebody has come from their house to visit somebody at their house. And they just happen to be the same person." - Pinkner

On the Observers: "We're going to learn a lot more about them. People are fascinated by them. There will be a lot of answers about the Observers this season." - Wyman

On next week's Fringe episode, viewers will learn a lot more about Broyles and his family. We'll review it in full after it airs.

Fringe Recap: "Dream Logic"

How did Fringe follow up on last week's great, William Bell-inspired episode? With an installment titled "Dream Logic."

It followed the team to Seattle, where it investigated the case of a man who stabbed his boss due to a bad dream.

Confused? Read our detailed recap and it will make more sense.

Father and Son at Work

We've listed a few of the best Fringe quotes from the episode below:

Walter: I need help putting this on.
Astrid: Walter, I do not think this is a very good idea.
Walter: Don't be such a grinch. I've told you science should be fun. | permalink
Walter: The ride back was invigorating. The turbulence over Ohio was like being in the belly of a seizing whale. I screamed like a little girl.
Astrid: I'm sure that went over well with the rest of the passengers. | permalink
Walter: Don't worry, Son. I promise to wear my shorts to bed so that if you bring any young ladies home, there won't be any embarrassing moments. | permalink

Coming Up on Fringe: More William Bell, More Astrid

A couple Fringe scoops to tide viewers over until tonight's new episode:

  • Leonard Nimoy will resurface as William Bell on the season’s 10th episode.
  • Astrid will actually leave the lab soon. We'll let producer Jeff Pinkner explain how that will work:

“Astrid gets out of the lab a lot more this season,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “And we just wrote a Astrid/Walter arc.”

Fellow producer J.H. Wyman added that Fringe is "looking actively for ways to expand the character.”

Got any suggestions for the show?

The Observer: Who is she? Why did you save her?
August: I saw her many years ago. She was a child. Her parents had just been killed. She was crying. But she... she was brave. She crossed my mind... somehow. She never left it. I think... it's what they call... feelings. I think... I love her.
