Gossip Girl Round Table: "The Lady Vanished"

Welcome to TV Fanatic's Gossip Girl Round Table, where we gather to review the events of "The Lady Vanished" and discuss the developments to come.

This week's topics include memorable GG quotes, Serenate vs. Chair (again), Jenny's v-card, various shady characters and whether Danessa is hot or not ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. What was your favorite Gossip Girl quote last night?
DANdy: Blair to Serena: "You haven't eaten bread since middle school." BAM!
Gossip Guy: I don't know why, but Chuck's line about Bart telling him kids wear should wear suits to Kindergarten killed me. Maybe it's because I pictured a five year old Chuck rocking a pin stripe as he managed the other kids finger painting.
Mister Meester: An epic Chuck Bass quote, just two words long: No talking.
2. Who's shadier: Damien or Chuck's supposed mom?
DANdy: Tie. Damien is more outwardly, unabashedly so, having no regrets about slinging drugs or trying to get Jenny naked. But is Chuck's "mom" up to something more diabolical?
Gossip Guy: Damien for sure. Besides carrying the name of the demonic child from The Omen, look at the dude's creepy '80s hair. Who does he think he is, Gordon Gecko? I say watch out Jenny, he's probably just coming in for a Bass Industries hostile takeover.
Mister Meester: Elizabeth/Evelyn. Something about her story doesn't add up. If I were Chuck, I'd ask for a DNA test, 'cause his mommy issues are getting straight up exploited.
The Tuesday Gossip Girl Plus/Minus Index
It's time once again for the Gossip Girl plus/minus index from New York Magazine, a thoroughly entertaining perspective on the show from New Yorkers and GG worshipers.
Some highlights from their take on "The Lady Vanished" ...
  • When this whole Jenny-as-crazed-aggressor plotline started up, we thought to ourselves, “Have Jenny and Damien ever even kissed? For more than three seconds?” Then we remembered that Jenny is 16. Plus 4.
  • Jenny Humphrey looks sort of normal and pretty during this episode. Minus 2, because this is also an episode during which the girl runs away.
  • The random Le Creuset pot sitting in the kitchen? Eh, a hotel would do that, for effect. Nate probably puts spare change in there at the end of the day, because he doesn’t know what the pot (or change) is actually for. Plus 2.
  • Why all this fuss about Jenny and nobody talks about how Serena just left? Minus only 1, because Rufus later took a swipe: “This isn’t Serena!”
Waldass
  • Blair looks amazing just lazing about and doing nothing, flipping through fashion magazines in a rough tweed skirt, great lipstick, and fab necklace. Plus 2.
  • Chuck breaks in and steals the locket, only to give it to his friends and instruct them to throw it away? Minus only 1, because he knew Blair never would.
  • God, the caramel make-out thing was DISGUSTING. Seriously, we will never look at a Whatchamacallit  the same way again. But, sigh, real. Plus 2. Also, the nod to Nate and Serena's original bar-top hookup was cute.
  • Isn’t Damian’s dad like an ambassador or prince or something? Wouldn't anyone notice if he was cracked out of his mind all the time? Minus 4.
  • Dan Humphrey totally checked out the dude walking down the hall flexing his six-pack. DO NOT THINK WE DID NOT NOTICE. Plus 5.
  • Jenny just threw away like hundreds of dollars worth of drugs? Damien wouldn’t have been all tender, he’d be PISSED. Minus 4. Also, what kind of bizarre pill drugs are these? Quaaludes? Is this the eighties? Minus 3.
  • At first we were annoyed at how melodramatic the Dan and Vanessa situation was. Like, why was she angry at him for confessing his feelings? But then we remembered hooking up with someone you really like at that age is exactly that melodramatic. Plus 8.
Gossip Girl Review: "The Lady Vanished"
Last night's Gossip Girl didn't have many shocking moments, but there were plenty of racy scenes, quality character moments and major story lines beginning to slowly build up.
While much of its buzz stems from its "OMG" factor, Gossip Girl has become, at its heart, a character-driven show, and "The Lady Vanished" proved why it's one of our favorites.
Who would have thought Chair would be the most adult couple on the show, including the actual adults? Season One, this is not ... and we're loving every second of them.
Chuck and Blair were the focal point of the episode, with a scandalous Jenny side plot and Dan and Vanessa doing their crazy thing somewhere else. But first ... Serenate.
The episode begins with Serena, Nate, whipped cream and strawberries, and no pants. Wow. Not one to be outdone, Blair moans loudly from upstairs to get their attention.
All in the first five minutes! Parents, hide your children!
Turns out Chuck is not there and Blair's show is a one-woman job, however. He's up to something B doesn't know about. We do. He's been stalking Elizabeth Fisher, his possible mom.
Chair Discussion
CHAIR FTW: Chuck and Blair stole the show again last night.
Ed Westwick killed last night, as Chuck's wide range of complicated, deep-seeded emotions were evident throughout. Did he want to get to know her? Even he wasn't sure.
When he finally confirmed that she was indeed his mom (does that make her the Mother Chucker?), he decided he'd rather just get a drink than catch up. Then S intervened.
Somehow making the drama with Chuck about herself, and eventually realizing her own father doesn't want to be found, Serena set up a meeting with Chuck and his mom.
Again, Chuck is standoffish and offers her a "test," i.e. a huge check to take a hike. He later said he wished she turned it down. What he really wants is to get to know her.
Which he does. She may well have ulterior motives we aren't clear on yet, and may not even be his mother. But last night ended on a definitively positive note for Chuck Bass.
Behind it all was the amazing Blair, going to great lengths to make Chuck happy. Schemes have their time and place, but our girl is as honest, loving and sincere as it gets.
Leighton Meester has done a terrific job portraying the evolution of this character. There are so many layers to Ms. Waldorf, but she handles them in perfectly nuanced fashion.
At the end of the episode, right before getting to know Elizabeth, Chuck actually smiles. Other couples on Gossip Girl could take a cue from Chair. Speaking of those couples ...
Tonight on Gossip Girl, Rufus and Lily grow suspect of Jenny’s relationship with Damien, and Chuck learns more about the woman who may or may not be his mother.
Gossip Girl Notes: Carter Baizen, Blair's Bulimia to Return
A couple of minor Gossip Girl notes from EW's spoiler chat today:
  1. In response to whether the show will revisit Blair Waldorf’s eating disorder, Michael Ausiello writes that they will, "but if you blink you’ll likely miss it." Executive producer Stephanie Savage teases a “moment” coming up that touches on B’s struggle with bulimia. “It’s very subtle, but for people who are looking for it, they will find it.”
  2. Carter Baizen (recurring guest star Sebastian Stan) will be making a return this season, and it’s supposedly tied to the arrival of Eric and Serena’s father (Billy Baldwin).
With Georgina returning too, this season is definitely going out with a bang. Any thoughts on what might bring Carter back to the UES? Or what trigger's Blair's eating disorder?
Sebastian Stan is poised for another stint as Carter Baizen.
