Recap

Meredith fires her therapist, or at least decides she no longer needs to be going there. Dr. Wyatt disagrees, but Meredith is not willing to listen.

Izzie gets out of the shower and finds Derek casing out her room to turn into his new study in the expectation that she and Alex will move out.

All three confront Meredith - all wondering why she hasn't mentioned their moving out.

Everyone gathers to hear the Chief's announcement of the new teaching protocol at the hospital.

Erica invites Cristina to scrub in on a surgery, but the chief assigns Alex to help Hahn instead. No more de facto specializing, says the Chief.

The patient, now Alex's, mourns his lack of luck and the fact that things seem to break around him, including the wheelchair that Alex is trying to push him in. When Alex goes to find another, the patient decides to just walk and slips in a puddle from the leaking ceiling.

The chief orders a CT scan, but the ceiling leaks onto the machine and the patient is left in darkness. Afterwards, the patient considers not even having the heart surgery that he came for, fearing that his string of bad luck will mean that the wound will get infected or something worse.

Heeding the Chief's words about improving bedside manner, Alex insists that the man's luck has to turn eventually and that he needs to find something or someone to live for in the meantime, while he himself stares at Izzie.

Cristina is assigned to work with Derek on a patient with chronic migraines instead of Meredith - The Chief has announced that personal relationships, loyalties, and favorites will no longer be a factor.

Callie has outed herself and Hahn to Mark, who has started teasing Hahn about it. Hahn is far than pleased that anyone knows her business, Mark especially, but Callie says Sloan is her friend and she needs to talk to friends, even if Hahn isn't a fan. Erica eventually agrees.

Meredith's patient's sister is being driven by her sister's obsession over her cancer and begs Meredith to talk to her about anything but that. Grey agrees begins whining about her roommates and her Derek dilemma.

In surgery, Bailey finds that the patient's tumor is far more advanced than they thought, growing around a major artery and making it inoperable.

The patient tries to put on a brave face, but when she guesses that Meredith is considering choosing the roommates over Derek, she begins to bemoan the unfairness of Meredith throwing away a hot guy when she is dying.

George is finally getting a chance to retake the residency exam and is just about to start when the ceiling begins leaking onto his test. Literally.

The maintenance guys want to shut off the water in order to fix the leak, and Bailey suggests shutting down the surgical wing until the leak can be fixed, but the Chief is determined to keep things operational.

Lexie Grey is helping Yang and Derek with their migraine patient and tries to tell them about an article that she remembers reading that might provide a clue to the patient's problem, but both blow her off.

She runs into Mark and, since the research she remembers involves Ear, Nose, and Throat doctors, and he's a ENT specialist, she tells him about it. Sloan decides to check the patient out and discovers that Lexie nailed it.

As a reward, Mark offers to let her scrub in, but she refuses, deciding to help George - who has gone back to helping out the Chief as his intern for one more day amid the crisis and the Chief instead.

The leaks get worse throughout the day before the roof actually collapses down on Alex's patient in the middle of surgery.

While making sure that the open wound area has been cleared of any debris from the ceiling, Alex discovers a malignant tumor on the man's pancreas.

After testing the tumor, they find it was at stage 1, a point at which it's virtually impossible to diagnose pancreatic cancer. Alex says that by the time pancreatic cancer is usually discovered, it's advanced to the point that it's a death sentence. So the flood saved the man's life.

The man realizes that his luck has finally turned.

The Chief finally shuts down the surgery wing, sending the patients to other hospitals.

Cristina finds Meredith's psychologist and begs her to tell Meredith that she needs to keep going to therapy. Dr. Wyatt responds that it must be hard for her to lose Meredith. Meredith runs into Wyatt later, though, and the shrink convinces her she's not done, even though she has made progress.

Meredith tells Derek that Izzie and Alex are family and she's not throwing them out. Derek wants to talk about it again later, but agrees for now.

The Chief and George find a quiet room so George can take his test. The Chief acts as the proctor, saying George has earned his chance.

Eat the muffin, Mer. Taste the muffin. Remember. The muffin.

Izzie

Cristina: There's no way that guy has been living at an 8. He's a wimp. His 8? My 3. I can take pain.
Meredith: You can't talk to my boyfriend for 10 minutes.
Cristina: Well there's pain and then there's torture.
