Elizabeth is speaking at a fundraising event. Afterwards, she is ambushed by a father whose daughter has joined a cult, The Covenant of John. It appears they are planning a mass suicide in Bolivia. Elizabeth promises to investigate. She asks Henry to look into the cult and warns Congressman Ames to not get further involved since he arranged for the father to ambush Elizabeth. The U.S. relationship is strained with Bolivia due to a botched DEA raid. They won't allow the US to intervene without more proof of danger. Henry and Elizabeth are shocked when they meet Stevie's boyfriend. Arthur is her boss at MicroLoans and almost twice her age. He and Henry don't see eye-to-eye when they begin to debate some hot-button issues. Congressman Ames ignored Elizabeth and went to Bolivia anyway. Now he has been taken hostage by the Covenant of John. President Dalton wants the Department of Defense to take over the situation, but that will lead to many deaths. Elizabeth has another idea: let Henry call Reverend Finch and talk, religious scholar to scholar. Dalton agrees but wants Henry to speak with him face-to-face. Henry goes to Bolivia and enters the compound by himself. Watch Madam Secretary Season 1 Episode 18 online to see how Henry defuses the situation.
