Private Practice Round Table: "Gone, Baby, Gone"

Welcome back to TV Fanatic's Private Practice Round Table!

With Private Practice Season 5 in the books, TVF staff writers Christina Tran and Carissa Pavlica join newcomers Caitlyn Castro and Jarrod Mitchell for a Round Table Q&A discussion of the finale.

Here's the TVF panel's take on everything from the emotional season-ending "Gone, Baby, Gone," with a look ahead to the recently-announced sixth season next fall ...

----------------------------------------

1. What was your favorite quote or scene from this week’s Private Practice episode?

Jarrod: Favorite scene was Amelia's turnaround of wanting to hold her baby. It was just really sad that she couldn't be with him any longer.

Caitlin: I actually enjoyed almost everything in this episode so I'll just mention what I didn't like which was everything to do with Violet and Pete then that last bit between Sam and Addison.

Carissa: The look on Sam's face when Addison was making out with Jake.

Christina: Mason asking Charlotte if he could call her “Mama”.

2. How did this Private Practice season finale rank with finales past?

Jarrod: This is definitely top 3. I wouldn't really consider season one, as it was abruptly cut short, but this season finale was done well. However, nothing beats Violet getting Lucas cut out of her. Such good memories!

Caitlin: I think that through Amelia's arc, it was definitely a lot more emotional and heartbreaking compared to the others. It wasn't really a finale that kept you looking for more, of course aside from knowing who Addison chose. But for the others characters, their storylines were tied up well which was probably done in case the show wasn't renewed.

Carissa: It seemed like they were giving some closure in the event the show wasn't picked up, so not as dramatic.

Christina: It was subpar because there really wasn’t an OMFG cliffhanger. However, it was still powerful and heartfelt – just the way I like my Private Practice.

3. Sam proposed while Jake was on his way with Chinese food and flowers in tow. Who will Addie choose?

Jarrod: Definitely Sam. I love Jake and Addison, but this is Addison. She's just gotten the man she loves to purpose, have a baby and a life together. I agreed with her "too little, too late", but face facts; Addison can't help but choose the opposite of what she needs. Personally, if she chooses Sam, then I hope Jake doesn't come back, because I think he deserves better.

Caitlin: Please let it be Jake!! As Addison said, Sam's a little too late. Even before they started out, she knew that Jake wanted the same things as she did while Sam made it perfectly clear that he didn't. It's Jake time now and I hope she sees that!

Carissa: Jake. If she chooses Sam, I'm done. I just don't like Sam's wishy washy decision making process and it's time for him to find someone else.

Christina: Neither! She’ll realize that the only man she needs in her life is Henry.

4. Amelia made a difficult decision regarding her child's organs. What did you think of the dilemma?

Jarrod: I thought it was a wonderful thing. I signed up to organ donation when I was 17. So the fact that she decided to save so many lives over the few moments she could have had with her child was the most selfless thing I think I've ever seen done. Furthermore, I'd like to congratulate Caterina Scorsone for not just this storyline, but for the entire season. She's done an amazing performance these past 8 and a half months and I know for a fact that she deserves an Emmy!

Caitlin: It wasn't really a dilemma to me. Amelia had made the choice and it was an undeniably difficult one to make but by making it, her baby became a unicorn baby.

Carissa: I didn't think it was a dilemma at all. It was horrible that doctors who consistently rely on brain activity to determine whether or not someone is a viable candidate for organ donation, to the protest of their families and their hopes they will one day wake up, would condemn Amelia when her child would NEVER wake up. Shame on them.

Christina: As I mentioned in my review, I didn’t see the dilemma at first, and it took some time for me understand where those who were against what Amelia wanted were coming from. In the end, I was glad to see that the team of doctors were able to help other babies and give Amelia what she wanted.

5. Share your predictions for the sixth season.

Jarrod: I foresee Pete gaining some miracle and avoiding prison. Cooper and Charlotte finally having a baby. Sam and Addison getting their happy ending, while Jake and Amelia will probably have some form of romance. As for Sheldon, I can only hope a storyline will come for him such as a love life. As for Violet, hopefully we see something from her past come up such as her parents. In regards to past cast members, I'm hoping a guest appearance by Audra McDonald. Perhaps the wedding of her and Fife? Just something unexpected would be fantastic!

Caitlin: Unfortunately, I think Addison will choose Sam instead of Jake. Pete and Violet will still keep going back and forth in their relationship because ultimately Pete did what he did for Lucas and not her so there's still something missing between them there. Amelia and Sheldon will still just be BFFs because she's probably not ready for anything else after everything she's gone through. Now I'm hoping none of those happen but for the sixth season I'm desperately hoping for a baby for Charlotte and Cooper. They deserve it and both are on the same page already when it comes to kids. With only a 13-episode order so far - these doctors deserve some happy endings already!

Carissa: Short season, I'm guessing a wrap up final season. My wish is that high and mighty Pete goes to prison. Violet moves away from people who obviously lead her down dark paths, Jake and Addison get married and move away from Sam. Sam falls in love with someone new. Sheldon and Amelia fall in love and get married and Charlotte and Cooper have a baby. My prediction is that none of that will happen. LOL.

Christina: A different season for Private Practice – one that shows Addie facing some failures with her career and Pete facing real consequences. I’m also down for a CharCoop baby, and hoping Addie either raises Henry alone or works it out with Jake. I don’t want Sheldon and Amelia to get together because I sincerely appreciate their friendship. As for Violet, Private Practice just wouldn’t be the same without her so I’d love nothing more for her to show us why the VAS exists. Seriously! One more thing, thanks for reading and joining in on our Round Tables! We’ll see you in the fall.

Private Practice Review: Unicorn Baby

Wow. Let’s all together take a deep breath and sigh in relief for two reasons.

First, that was one heck of a season finale! Seriously, talk about intense. Secondly, we really ought to celebrate news of the renewal of Private Practice together. Although we can’t actually high five, rest assured that I’m just as enthused as you are to know we’ll see our favorite doctors once again.

"Gone, Baby, Gone" mainly focused on Amelia going into labor. The Seaside Wellness doctors were at odds after all learning about Amelia’s controversial decision regarding her child's organs. The doctors questioned whether what Amelia wanted was actually murder and if it was ethical.

At first, I felt like what Amelia wanted was just what needed to be done. However, I slowly understood that what I thought appeared to be clearly black and white was indeed a very gray area. Nevertheless, I thought that Amelia’s choice was brave and amazing as her “unicorn baby” was very much a miracle.

When Amelia held her child and had only a couple of seconds to decide what to do next, I simply couldn’t hold the tears back. I thought to myself how incredibly difficult it must be and realized how incredibly strong she has been as she’s overcome such a great deal throughout this season.

I’ve said it before and I need to say it again: Caterina Scorsone was absolutely fantastic tonight. Every ounce of her pain and angst was perfectly expressed. This girl needs to totally be honored for her work.

Elsewhere: There was lots of touching, making out and even more with Jaddison this week. However, as we all know, nothing ever comes easy for our girl, Addie. In fact, Sam definitely through a wrench into Addie’s new plans with Jake by professing his love for her and even proposing. Where did that come from?!?

Sure, it was nice that he finally manned up and decided to fight for her, but I’m with Addie. She responded to his rant by saying it was simply too little and too late. However, with Sam claiming he was all in and Jake on his way with flowers and Chinese food, we were left not knowing who she chose.

Who would you like to see Addison pick? I, for one, still want her to choose neither. She’s hardly ever been truly single and I hope she chooses only Henry. The men can wait.

Meanwhile, Charlotte and Cooper shared some incredible scenes as usual. It’s evident that their love has never been stronger than ever. Every scene with Mason was also perfect, and I just love their family dynamic. I am really looking forward to what happens next for this family. Maybe Charlotte will be pregnant soon enough.

Thanks to the recklessly annoying Pete, there won’t be a Violet Annoyance Scale this week. Though he finally realized that he needed to cooperate and do whatever it takes to get back to his family, I hated how stubborn he was and thought he was absolutely ridiculous when he told Violet to just tell Lucas the truth about his whereabouts. Seriously? If that type of behavior persists, we might have to consider a Pete Annoyance Scale.

Other Memorable Moments

Sheldon and Amelia finally made up. They really are best friends, aren’t they?

As Cooper was speaking to Pete about stepping up and being a parent and husband first, I couldn’t help but to be so proud of Cooper. He’s come such a long way.

How many of you smiled when Mason asked Charlotte if he could call her “Mama” the way that she calls her mother?

Well, TV Fanatics, it’s been a pleasure. See you next season! Be sure to hit the comments to share your predictions for next season. Also, don’t forget to return later this week to chime in on our Private Practice Round Table.

Private Practice Season Finale Sneak Peeks: A Baby with No Brain

Consider yourselves warned, Private Practice fans: tonight's season finale won't be all sunshine and jelly beans.

The ABC drama takes on an even more serious tone than usual, as "Gone, Baby, Gone" features Amelia going into labor and the Seaside Wellness doctors all learning about her controversial decision regarding her child's organs.

Is it murder? Is it ethical? Watch the debate unfold in one of the two finale clips below:

Paul Adelstein Previews Private Practice Season Finale

Go ahead, take a deep breath and celebrate, Private Practice fans: this ABC drama has been renewed for a sixth season.

So, without the possibility of tomorrow night's "Gone, Baby, Gone" serving as a series finale, what can fans expect from the episode?

"Amelia goes into labor," Paul Adelstein told me on the phone last week. "And that's a big deal, obviously, given what she's going through… it will be revealed to everybody and there will be a disagreement over the ethics of that. Things get pretty heated."

Private Practice Season 5 Finale Promo

Where will Cooper come down on the controversial topic?

"From a medical standpoint, he's such a child advocate," the actor said. "The upside of saving all those children really appeals to him."

Meanwhile, Cooper, Mason and Charlotte will continue "figuring out how to be a family," Adelstein said, acknowledging that his character's main storyline on season five has "certainly not been what I expected."

"It's been a great journey for Cooper," Adelstein said, looking back over the course of the series. "You saw someone at the beginning with a lot of potential, but he was still a man child, for lack of a better term… then he fell in love with this great woman and discovered he had a child and that's something he always wanted. He's really incorporated that into his growing experience."

And nothing symbolizes that experience more than Cooper's priorities, Adelstein explained. Just look at his focus ever since Mason came into his life.

"He was really worried over whether Charlotte would take to being a mother. She was just thrust into that role… So he's enjoyed a great deal of relief and joy at seeing her step up to it and really development a deep love for Mason, and vice versa."

Similarly, Cooper and Charlotte have developed a deep love for one another, which is a rarity on a Shonda Rhimes show. They are simply… happy. Together and happy.

"We thought it would be a rocky relationship," Adelstein said when the couple first got together. "And there's been some backsliding. But both had huge happenings in their lives - her father died, she was assaulted and raped - and they really came together as a result... Sometimes opposites just make such a strong bond. I just totally buy them a couple."

Private Practice airs its season finale tomorrow night on ABC.

A very busy day at ABC continues.

Private Practice Round Table: "Drifting Back"

Welcome back to TV Fanatic's Private Practice Round Table!

Our Private Practice review broke down last Tuesday's "Drifting Back," in detail. Now, TVF staff writers Christina Tran and Carissa Pavlica join newcomers Caitlyn Castro and Jarrod Mitchell for a Round Table Q&A.

Read their answers below and weigh in with yours!

----------------------------------------

1. What was your favorite quote or scene from this week’s Private Practice episode?

Jarrod: The talk between Jake and Amelia. It was sweet, insightful and caring. I just hope Shonda doesn't show any love investment between them. I liked my Jaddison kiss at the end and would like for that to have more investment.

Caitlin: Again, it wasn't exactly an episode that blew me away so I didn't think any scene was particularly spectacular. But as a huge Charlotte and Cooper shipper, I did enjoy their office sex. Especially the way Cooper said "Awesome". And the Jaddison kiss was pretty great, too!

Carissa: Most definitely Addison walking over to Jake, sitting on his lap and planting a kiss on him. Most definitely.

Christina: This one goes to Jake: “I see that we're all in it together, and I think I'm good with that.”

2. Sheldon's back. Were you as excited as everyone else at the practice or could care less like Amelia?

Jarrod: I was excited to have Sheldon back, but I could care less about his character not having a storyline. I thought we were in for something exciting and it turns out that we get nothing. I'm not sure if the writers just wanted some drama between Sheldon and Amelia or what, but come next season, Sheldon better get something!

Caitlin: I'm kind of disappointed with how he came back. I really thought the ex-wife thing would mean a short arc for Sheldon, but it delivered nothing for the character except that he wasn't there for Amelia when she needed him. He practically spent the hour running after people asking about her and he got nowhere. I feel as though they just made him leave to give Amelia a reason to really lean on Jake.

Carissa: Amelia cared more than anyone. She would never admit it for as hurt as she was, but she needed him like never needed anyone before and she was so hurt. That's why she pretended she didn't care that he was back. I love Sheldon, I was as happy as the rest of them to see him back at the practice.

Christina: I was excited, but it was a total letdown for him to not really have anything going on once again. Then again, I think that this season has had so many strong arcs that an actual storyline for Sheldon should take place next season.

3. Cooper and Charlotte have been getting it on at the office lately. Is it time for them to catch baby fever?

Jarrod: As much as I'd like a CharCoop baby, I think that Mason is enough for now. They're already adapting to life with a 9 year old. Come next season, Shonda can throw in all the babies she wants. Although, I have this feeling that Shonda won't make babies between these two easy. As you can tell, she has a thing about making people barren.

Caitlin: That's definitely what I'm hoping for! I think it's the next best thing for them especially after how Charlotte's really become a mother to Mason. They've been through a lot this season so hopefully this will be their happy ending for the season.

Carissa: It's still a possibility, but they had much of the story this season, so I think their next big story will come with a new season.

Christina: I’m with Carissa on this one. My favorite couple is CharCoop and I’d love for the writers to go there, but I feel like the baby craze is off the charts already with this season. I’d love to see Charlotte pregnant next season! I mean even Kadee Strickland wants the same thing!

4. Harder to believe: Violet is finally putting her house on the market or someone at Seaside Wellness will actually face consequences?

Jarrod: That's a trick question. I expected that house to go on to Lucas' grandchildren until one day it blew up from the meth lab inside it. In regards to Pete, I have no words. I respect what he did as a doctor, but did he think of his family? What impact it may have? He says he loves his son and wants to be there when he gets older. Good luck doing that when you're serving a life sentence.

Caitlin: It was about time Violet put that house up for sale so I'd have to say that it's surprising for one of the doctors to actually face consequences for their actions. The last time we saw something like this happen was with Cooper back in season three but that didn't really reflect on him as a doctor nor jeopardize the practice/hospital. What Pete did definitely does and Charlotte didn't really have a choice.

Carissa: Someone will actually face consequences. But oh happy day it was Pete!!!

Christina: Violet finally putting her house on the market. My home is nearly brand new and I had some minor water damage recently. That alone made me want a new house. Seriously, what has taken her SO long?

5. Pete was arrested. What happens next?

Jarrod: An obvious slap on the wrist. Over the years, we've learned that Sam killed a pedophile on his table. Cooper was aiding and abetting someone who kidnapped his son. Charlotte was addicted to drugs and ran a woman off the road. Amelia practically assisted in her friend’s suicide. Not to mention, Pete and Sam both assisted in euthanasia in a patient back in Season 2. I'm not saying that Addison, Violet, Sheldon, Naomi, Jake and Dell (may he R.I.P) are all in the clear, as I'm sure they've got skeletons in their past, but if you think about; do any of these characters actions have consequences that don't relate to their personal lives?

Caitlin: Hoping for two things. One is that it just further proves that he and Violet don't work out and they should stop trying to force something that just isn't going to happen. And another is that this doesn't get resolved in the season finale. It shouldn't be so easy for him to get out of this and I think it should be one of the things left hanging as the season ends.

Carissa: He goes to prison and gets written off the show. He's always been so self-righteous and annoying. Bye bye, Pete. Hope you spend more time in the pen than Dr. House.

Christina: I want Pete to face real repercussions. Whatever they may be, he can’t get away with… murder. Maybe he will lose his license to practice medicine, written off the show, and then sail away with Violet in tow. The only thing I'd hardly miss is Lucas. They just never showed enough of him.

Private Practice Season Finale Preview: A Difficult Delivery

What's beautiful about the finale is we discover new things about our characters and watch our characters discover things about themselves and we realize that the women in the show are all in very different places than they were when we started this year. We discovered how much they've grown and how much they've been fundamentally changed and that's exciting.

So said Shonda Rhimes to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview when asked about next Tuesday's "Gone, Baby, Gone" and whether it was written as a season - or a series - finale, given the struggling Private Practice ratings.

The creator emphasized that the episode leaves plenty of material available for a sixth season, as Pete and Violet will come to a realization about their relationship, following events from this week's "Drifting Back," while Amelia will go into labor and Addison will face what ABC hypes as "the hardest decision of her life."

Watch the official trailer now:

Private Practice Review: In It Together

Tonight’s penultimate episode of the season – but hopefully, not the series – could have certainly served as a season finale.

Between Pete’s rash judgment to help his patient and both Amelia and Addie facing life-altering decisions, there were choices galore to be made. Rest assured, though, the Seaside Wellness doctors will be back next week and we’ll hopefully get some, if not all, of the answers to the questions we were left with after "Drifting Back."

For now, let’s discuss what went down.

Sheldon finally returned from his two-week vacation in Aruba with his ex-wife. It was really nice to have him around, but a shame we didn’t get to see more of an actual storyline with his personal life.

Everyone but Amelia was excited to see him. At first, she was utterly cold toward him and then was asking for his help in an extremely unexpected way to help her forget. I love how frustrating Amelia can be at times, and then she can immediately make you feel every ounce of her pain.

Thank goodness, Jake was there all along to help her stray from slipping away back to using. Though it was short, I appreciated the way he was able to relate to Amelia by sharing more on his background story. All in all, Jake helped Amelia realize that in order to choose to stay alive, carry her baby to term and for her baby to help save the lives of other babies, she couldn’t let her addiction kill her nor the child.

Elsewhere: Sam and Addie spent most of the time playing house, finally pushing Addie to ask Sam what he truly wanted. We weren’t shown his response, but Jaddison shared yet another explosive and surprising kiss.

I loved when Jake said: "I see that we’re all in it together, and I think I’m good with that.” That’s totally how the doctors at Seaside Wellness are – all in it together. For more lines, don't forget to check out our Private Practice quotes section.

Meanwhile, this week’s episode focused on two different cases. In the first, Sheldon and Violet worked together with a family troubled by a father who couldn’t control sexual feelings for his daughter. Luckily, Amelia was able to save the day by removing a lesion on the father’s brain. I thought it was realistic for the daughter not to be able to forgive her father right away.

As for the second case, Pete was caught between a patient's partner and father over the course of life saving treatment. While both Sam and Charlotte were able to separate their feelings from the law, Pete refused to honor the patient’s father’s wishes and helped end the patient’s life. Last season ended with the practice in shambles, will the hospital face the same fate?

Now it’s time for the Violet Annoyance Scale (VAS). Thanks to Pete acting like an irate child and incredibly irresponsible throughout the entire installment, I’m rating this episode a 2 on the VAS. Violet constantly tried to get him to talk about their relationship, or the lack of one. The harder Violet tried to talk to Pete, the more it seemed like he would go to the extremes to avoid her. Regardless of their circumstances, she made it clear that she wanted to fight for what they had. Hey Violet, key word is had. These two together are beyond excruciating to watch now.

I honestly laughed out loud when Violet asked if she was repellant. I also loved when Cooper stated that she, Pete and Lucas made a great family but questioned if she and Pete were actually a great couple. This is something most of us have been wondering for quite some time now.

Other Observations

How adorable was baby Henry? Seriously, his big eyes show just how happy a baby he is. Then again, who wouldn’t want to be fed while listening to the waves crash?

Violet is FINALLY selling her murder home. Seriously, that house could be showcased on American Horror Story.

So, what did you think, TV Fanatics? Hit the comments to share your predictions for next week’s season finale. Also, don’t forget to return later this week to chime in on our Private Practice Round Table.

Private Practice Round Table: "True Colors"

Welcome back to TV Fanatic's Private Practice Round Table!

Our Private Practice review broke down last Tuesday's "True Colors," in detail.

Jarrod: Probably when Addison went off at Sam on his office. Honestly, he did offer to watch baby Henry, so why be such a jerk about it?

Caitlyn: Nothing really stood out for me in this episode, but I guess what I liked the most was the last scene between Cooper, Charlotte, and Mason. I'm hoping this is the beginning of this family functioning well. It might be a little too ambitious to think Cooper might finally grow up, but one can only hope.

Carissa: Charlotte: “There's only one child in this family Cooper, so get over it.”

Christina: For maybe the first time ever, I didn’t have a favorite moment. It was only an okay episode to me.

2. Which medical case did you like more: the pregnant illegal immigrant or the child facing a gender identity disorder?

Jarrod: Probably the gender identity disorder. It was something different for Seaside Wellness, and Mason got to play a part in it, too.

Caitlyn: I was more interested in the GID case simply because it's something that PP hasn't tackled before. It was interesting to see Cooper and Violet work on it for two reasons. One was because it served as a catalyst for Mason to reconnect with Cooper and second because for once Violet didn't come out to me as her usual pushy therapist self.

Carissa: Neither. Far too politically charged for my taste and I prefer my TV to show both sides of the story, not slam their political leanings in my face. That's something The Good Wife and Boston Legal before it were always able to pull off very well - to show both sides of the story and not offend either side by compassionately examining both sides. Instead, Shonda clearly marked her personal views in the sand and didn't allow room for critical thinking. Bad move.

Christina: I liked both equally, but was more surprised of the former’s ending.

3. Cooper called Mason a jerk. Based off of last night’s episode, who’s the real jerk: Cooper, Sam or Pete?

Jarrod: I'd say Pete. I'm sorry Pete fans, but when his wife ran away, he lashed out at her like some crazy baboon, but it's okay for him to leave? Furthermore, isn't he basically pressuring Violet to get back with him? I highly doubt that jet-setting off would assist in putting your marriage back together.

Caitlyn: All three were incredible jerks to their significant other or to the woman in their lives. It's hard to choose between Cooper not apologizing to Charlotte, Sam getting pissed at Addison that he had to watch Henry (even though he offered), and Pete willing to go to El Salvador for a random patient. But if I had to choose, I'd say Cooper because Charlotte's my favorite and I think she's the one that least deserves the jerk treatment.

Carissa: A trifecta. Cooper is acting like he's Mason's brother instead of his father, Pete almost ran away to Guatemala with another woman and her baby to avoid his own (seriously???) and Sam didn't want a child of his own but now that Addison has one, he can't keep his hands off of him and yet angrily accuses Addison of forcing Henry into his arms. They're like the Three Stooges.

Christina: All were asses. I’ve got to pick Cooper as the biggest jerk of them all though. I loved when Charlotte told him to grow up.

4. When Addison came home realizing the nanny and baby Henry were missing, what did you expect to happen next?

Jarrod: I expected Sam to be holding him. Plain and simple.

Caitlyn: It took a while for it to click but when it did, I expected he'd be with Sam again.

Carissa: Exactly what did. But I didn't expect Sam to be such an ass about it. The men on this show need to grow up.

Christina: I guess I am far more gullible than everyone else on the roundtable because I totally was expecting the worst.

5. There are only two remaining episodes. Share the one thing you’d like to see happen most.

Jarrod: I am hoping for everyone to just be happy. That way when we enter Season 6, everyone has their fresh new start and challenges to face without anything else still pulling them back since last season. I'm also hoping for a surprise appearance by Audra McDonald. Sadly, I don't think that'll happen.

Caitlyn: Would it be too idealistic if I said I'm still hoping Charlotte is pregnant before season's end and they start the next from there? I guess it's pretty unlikely, but I'm really crossing my fingers for this to be their family's happy ending for the season!

Carissa: For the women to go on strike. For Amelia to have her baby and have a happy ending, knowing how many other children she was able to save by carrying her baby to term. For Pete and Violet and Sam and Addison to call permanent ends to their relationships. Enough already. They do not work. I loved what Jake said about not going back to the same watering hole (or whatever), and for Cooper to be a man! Take charge and show his new family how much they mean to him, as a whole.

Christina: If I had to choose only one thing to see, it would be for Addison to end this season with her undivided attention only on Henry. Although I was recently rooting for Jaddison, I believe Addie only needs one (little) man in her life for the time being. I can wait for Jaddison.
