-Melissa Joy (MJ) Black is brutally killed and left tied to a pier piling with a note and an ice pick through her chest. Mob boss Patti Doyle (Maura's biological father) is the main suspect. Because of her connection to the case, Maura has Dr. Pike perform the autopsy.
-Maura has to push Pike to do a thorough autopsy. There is skin in the victim's teeth. MJ bit her attacker.
-MJ took a job on the docks to prove that her father's accident was not alcohol related like the union says it was. She followed Union rep, Ray who was meeting with Sutton, a representative of the new company taking over the docks. Sutton paid off Ray to overlook safety precautions and get work done quicker.
-When they caught MJ recording them, they killed her and tried to pin it on mob boss Patti Doyle.
-Doyle gets shot and shows up on Maura's doorstep. He holds her and Tommy at gunpoint while Maura tends to his wounds.
-Ray is found dead. MJ's bite marks match marks on his arm. Doyle tortured and killed him. Before he died Ray gave up Sutton.
-Jane, Frost, and Korsak arrive in time to save Sutton but Doyle escapes.
-Tommy, Jane's brother spends the night with Maura playing chess.
