As it turns out, Solomon was attempting to time-travel back to that fateful day and spare the girl. Of course, this would rewrite history so Ichabod and Abbie had to stop him at all costs. Ultimately, Solomon is defeated and while the witnesses are off in the distance, Irving appears and kills Solomon. He also steals the Grand Grimoire from the dead body. Though this case appears to be a win for the good guys, we soon learn that Captain Irving is still in league with Henry. He turns over the enchanted black book to his mater.
