Eric Braeden Speaks on Exit from The Young and the Restless

Has Genoa City really seen the last of Eric Braeden?

That's hard to imagine for viewers of The Young and the Restless. But the veteran actor got his walking papers late last month, and talks about what went down in a new interview with TV Guide Magazine.

On whether he's really gone: It is not a fait accompli but I am seriously thinking about various other career options. As you know, I came to Y&R from film, from nighttime television, from theatre. It’s not that one isn’t willing to acquiesce to [a lesser salary], but it is the way in which I was approached.

I was dealt with in a cold, deeply insulting and unconscionable manner and I’m a defiant bastard. I feel a great loyalty to the character and to the show, but that loyalty is not reciprocated. The daytime business has become cutthroat.

On his rumored pay cut: It’s like being hit with a sledgehammer. What is sad is that they are playing with - and easily disregarding - the contributions made by a lot of the actors who have been on the show for a very long time, and it seemingly makes no difference to them. As a result, there is an enormous feeling of emotional upheaval on the set. And that was the intention, of course.

It’s all about intimidation. It’s all about leaking things to the internet before I even knew I was going to [be asked to] renegotiate. I had no idea! There are obviously leaks coming from the inside, all there to bludgeon you, to intimidate you.

Eric Braeden: Written Out of The Young and the Restless

The economy continues to take its toll on the world of daytime drama.

The latest tragic example involves Eric Braeden, as TV Guide Canada reports his character of Victor Newman has been written out of The Young and the Restless. The actor has already taped his final scenes.

Soap Opera Stalwart

With budgets cuts affecting even the biggest names, Braeden had been locked in intense negotiations. He's signed through 2010, but that contract is apparently void now.

“Everyone knows they have to take a slash in pay,” an insider said. “That isn’t the issue — the issue is that their current contract isn’t being respected. Once you open up a contract during a cycle, the original contract is null and void and you must start over from scratch. Eric thinks he should be paid his current salary until next year."

We'll keep fans apprised of this situation as news develops.

The Young and the Restless: Casting for Malcolm Winters

The Young and the Restless has put out a couple of casting notices this week.

  • The first seeks an actor to bring back the character of Malcolm Winters. He was previously played by Emmy Award-winner Shemar Moore from 1994-2002, and again in 2004-05. Malcolm will re-appear in November.
  • The soap opera is also casting for Tucker, an older man described as a 55-60 year-old maverick billionaire. Also set to air in November, Tucker will hopefully be played by a "known, established actor," the notice reads.

Any thoughts on who should take on these parts?
