Liza Minnelli to Recur on Ugly Betty

If she's half as funny as she was on Arrested Development, we'll be tuning in...

Liza Minnelli has landed a recurring role on Ugly Betty. As first reported by Fox News, the veteran actress will recur on the ABC as Lena Korvinka, Mark Indelicato's high school drama teacher.

"There were massive rumors last year, then again in early January that Liza was being courted for the show, but Liza originally hadn't planned to do [it]," said an insider, adding:

Ugly Betty producers presented her with a great offer and a hilarious story and they kept coming back to her. She's going to be playing an outrageous drama teacher and it is going to be fun! Liza is excited to be playing another off-the-wall character like Lucille 2 on Arrested Development."

On other Ugly Betty casting news, Kristen Johnson reprises her role as Helen on next week's episode.

Ugly Betty Review: "Blackout!"

On this week's episode, "Blackout!", there is nothing like a city-wide blackout to mix things up!

Who would have ever guess Wilhelmina and Daniel to have a semi-make-out session? (Obviously we knew it was coming from the previews, but still!) It was great to see Wilhelmina punch Daniel in the face.

But, did we catch something at the end? That look she gave Daniel clearly meant something. Did this kiss open the door to a potential new office romance?!

We think that Betty's optimism can get kind of annoying, especially when you are in Marc's position. His chips are down and it looked like there was no hope. Although, having a Betty around in these negative times proves that it pays to be positive. She wouldn't let Marc give up - and it landed him a  new position at Mode!

Really happy or faking it?

We were so happy to see Bobby and Ignacio finally getting along. It looks like Bobby has made his way into the hearts of all the Suarez's now! Hopefully, since they are sans baby, Bobby will still be the man that he has proven himself to be. What can we say, we are most definitely Team Bobby!

I am not sure if we give Amanda as much attention as her character deserves. She is definitely one of the funniest people on Ugly Betty - always saying or doing something completely ridiculous. That is why we love her so! It has been a while since she's landed a beau. We think it is about time to bring in a new love interest!

We leave you with a couple of our favorite Ugly Betty quotes from last night. This week we have to give it up to Amanda:

Amanda: I'm so getting another chimp out of this! | permalink

Amanda: Like a month to the flame burned by desire. | permalink

Amanda: Betty's voice brought darkness to all the land. | permalink

Ugly Betty Preview: "Blackout!"

Newly single Betty tries to be neighborly by planning a karaoke party in her apartment building.

Trouble always seems to follow Betty - her building is robbed, and it’s sort of her fault. Poor Marc! Something that was irreplaceable was stolen in the robbery.

Shocked by something or someone?

Meanwhile, Daniel and Wilhelmina are back at it - just like cat's and dog's fighting with each other. So, Amanda tricks them into attending couple's counseling. Frank Whaley guest stars as their Dr. Sparks.

Although Bobby has changed and become the man Hilda needs, Ignacio refuses to accept Bobby.

Everything for everyone changes when a citywide blackout hits New York. Here is an early look at what's ahead via the following photos from "Blackout!" Click on each to enlarge...

Rich Sommer to Romance Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty fans may need to observe a moment of silence in memory of Matt and Betty.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Rich Sommer has landed a potentially recurring role on the ABC series. The Mad Men star will play Jimmy, a love interest for the show’s suddenly-single main character.

A fireman, Jimmy will go on “the date from hell” with Betty, as described by a show insider. He'll debut in March.

Ugly Betty Review: "Back In Her Place"

We love Betty and Matt together. So on this week's installment, "Back In Her Place" we were naturally quite saddened by Matt's decision to leave town and head to Africa.

Sure! Saving lives and helping the planet is wonderful and great food for the soul - blah blah blah - and I suppose it was never definite that he would be out of her life for good, but yes, this was a very sad one for us. Our only hope now is for Betty and Daniel to finally hook it up! (Preview wise, how weird is it that Wilhelmina and Daniel might lock lips!?)

The overall episode was very uniting. Everything kind of had a meaning. And one common theme was making you walk a mile in someone else's shoes. Obviously, the most hilariouspart was seeing Betty be torchered by Wilhelmina's antics. Everyone loves a good torcher fest now and then, right? Or our we a little bit too S&M?

Either way, the episode really was about the heart having to say good-bye. One part we really had trouble with understanding is why Connor had to let Wilhelmina go? I agreed with Wilhelmina that if he really loved her then why wouldn't he just do what she made her happy? Would it really have been that difficult to carry on the way they have been?

Back that thang up!

So, all in all, the episode was very sad for us to watch. The one silver lining throughout it had to be Bobby. Wow! What a hunk of beef turned awesome man he is! He really came through and made us believe that he will not only be a good parent, but perhaps the lobster Hilda has always searched for!

There were some great Ugly Betty quotes from last night, but there was one that really tied up the episode and had great meaning for us. Because it was so great, we leave you with just this one.

Betty: I've had to say good-bye more times than I may have liked, but everyone can say that. And no matter how many times we have to do it - even if it's for the greater good, it still stings. And although we will never forget what we've given up, we owe it to ourselves to keep moving forward. What we can't do is live our lives afraid of the next good-bye because chances are they are not going to stop. The trick is to recognize when a good-bye can be a good thing - when it's a chance to start again. | permalink

Ugly Betty Preview of "Back In Her Place"

This Wednesday brings an all new episode of Ugly Betty. And by the looks of it, a whole new Betty too! Looks like lady got her braces off!

Braces?!?!

This has to be the silver lining in her dark cloud because this week is supposed to be Betty's worst week EVER.

The episode will have Betty recounting all the horrible things Wilhelmina puts her through to Mr. Z (guest star Fisher Stevens). However, she will not let Wilhelmina get the best of her. Throughout all of the evil experiments, Betty will prevail.

Meanwhile, Bobby treats a hormonal Hilda to some pampering during "Hilda Week," and Wilhelmina makes a conjugal visit to an incarcerated Connor.

Checkout some preview pictures below of what is to come! Don't forget to tune in Wednesday night at 10 p.m.! We can't let this amazingly funny show get the ax!

Ugly Betty Review: "The Passion of the Betty"

Last night did not disappoint with the return of Ugly Betty. C'Mon people! Gather your friends around the boob tube to start re-watching this beloved show! As sad as we are to see Eastwick take the ax, it is so nice to have Betty following two of our favorite shows: Modern Family and Cougar Town.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson from Modern Family made a cameo as Dr. Farkas and as great as it is to see our favorite red head, we don't believe him to be even the slightest bit straight! Stick to your own much loved show plaaahleese!

Betty seems to have it all - the great job, the amazing family, and the handsome - rich boyfriend who is totally in love with her, but as fate has it, all is not what it seems.

Matt really shows off his psycho side...err artistic side with his crazy obsession with her. Pretty much all his artwork is somehow related to Betty. This guy really needs to get a new love in his life - quick!

Lucky for Betty, it looks like Matt has come to his senses towards the end of the episode. We really like this pairing and can't wait to see some more make-out sessions between these two sans braces!

Here are a few of our favorite segments from last nights episode "The Passion of the Betty":

  • Marc has a boyfriend! Even though it looked like it was about to come to an end, Marc gave into Troy's adoration.

Troy and Marc

  • Wilhelmina is back! Thanks to the help of Daniel and Claire our favorite villain wasn't gone from Mode very long.
  • Hilda is preggo! Not only did she get herself knocked-up, but she ditched the fugly Senator for a much hotter new boyfriend. Go Hilda!

There were so many great one liners! Here are a few of our favorite Ugly Betty quotes from last night:

Troy: (to Marc) Look at you, you're an Adonis. You're like a gay Hugh Jackman! | permalink

Amanda: (to Mark about Troy) No! He is imprinted on you like a gay duckling. If you don't wean him off you slowly, he'll die. | permalink

Betty: Oh my lover is good!...At painting! | permalink

Amanda: (about Claire's whereabouts) How would I know what she was doing in South Dakota? I don't even know where that country is. | permalink

Daniel or Henry? Ugly Betty Creator Mulls Romance Options

It's not at the level of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob, but Ugly Betty creator Silvio Horta has his own dating dilemma to consider:

Should his show's title character end up with Daniel or Henry?

The issue is relevant because this may be Ugly Betty's final season, even though ABC is giving the series a major boost by shifting it to Wednesday nights, starting ths week.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Horta admits he's considering a romance between Betty and Daniel: “We’ve been batting around the idea. It is not outside the realm of possibility that something [could] happen, but we’re not sure yet.”

Betty and Daniel Pic

As for Chris Gorham's Henry? “I think there is a place for him to come back in some way,” Horta said. “But I don’t know if them being together at the end is what’s going to happen.”

What will happen? The creator isn't sure. However, he has resigned himself to one fact: “You’re always going to piss somebody off.”

You tell us, fans: Are you on Team Daniel or Team Henry?

Ugly Betty Sneak Peek: "The Passion of the Betty"

This Wednesday, Ugly Betty meets Modern Family.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell on the latter sitcom, reprises his role as Betty's orthodontist, Dr. Farkas.

Ugly Betty: Returning to Wednesday Nights, With Special Guest Stars

The bad news for Ugly Betty fans: the show is off the air until January 6.

The great news: that's a Wednesday.

As has been rumored for weeks, the show is abadoning its graveyard of a time slot on Friday nights and moving to the middle of the week when it returns. But that's not all:

Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family's Mitchell) will reprise his role as Betty's orthodontist on the January 6 installment. Among other storylines viewers can look forward to:

  • Betty surprises Matt with a gallery showing of his art work. Tony Award-winning actress Christine Ebersole (pictured below) guest stars as Frances, the gallery owner;
  • Matt Newton returns as Marc's one-night stand, Troy, who is clearly smitten with Marc;
  • Hilda struggles with whether or not to tell Bobby that he's the father of her unborn child;
  • Cal Hartley hires a major Hollywood player, Denise Ludwig, to replace Wilhemina.

As always, TV Fanatic will update our Ugly Betty music and quotes section after each new episode.
