Warehouse 13 Recap: Series Premiere

The SyFy network kicked off its rebranding with Warehouse 13 last night.

The show combines elements of The X-Files, Fringe and Bones to create a mysterious, light-hearted procedural.

After one episode, we can offer tips for improvement (as we do in our detailed recap), but we can also have hope that the series will enjoy a long, fruitful run. It's got the premise and characters in place to succeed.

Read through our complete recap of the series premiere now and let us know what you thought of it.

Among our favorite Warehouse 13 quotes from the pilot episode were:

Artie: And that is exactly what we do here. We take the unexplained.. and we just safely tuck it away in this super-sized Pandora's Box.
Pete: Metaphorically speaking.
Artie: Well, actually, Pandora's box is over in Aisle 989-B. Empty, of course. | permalink
Artie: Come on. Come on inside. I'll show you around.
Myka: Around what? What am I doing here?
Artie: I'll explain everything inside. Come on. I made cookies.
Pete: Ooh. | permalink
Pete: What's that?
Frederic: An invitation to endless wonder.
Pete: Okay, could you sound a little more creepy? | permalink
Artie: I'd like to think of it as America's attic. | permalink

USA Today Previews Warehouse 13 Series Premiere

Warehouse 13 premieres on the rebranded SyFy Channel tonight.

A departure from such serious fare as the recently-departed Battlestar Galactica on the same network, Warehouse 13 practically holds the new network's future in its hands.

"We were looking for an audience a little more female, a little younger, but also something with mass appeal that would be a good companion to Eureka," programming executive Mark Stern told USA Today, adding that he was quickly sold on the concept of a warehouse full of unusual artifacts and a pair of mismatched Secret Service agents (Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly) assigned to assist head honcho Artie Nielsen.

Said actor Saul Rubinek, who plays the main character of Nielsen:

"We're walking a tightrope between humor and thriller. I hope that keeps the audience off balance and entertained."

We'll be tuning in to Warehouse 13. Will you be?

Warehouse 13 Photos from Pilot Episode

On July 7, the Sci-Fi network rebrands itself as Sy Fy.

Helping to launch the redesigned channel? Warehouse 13, a mysterious drama that Sy Fy hopes will become a Fringe-like sensation.

We're intrigued by the concept of two Secret Service Agents being pulled away from D.C. and placed in charge of a structure that houses supernatural objects in South Dakota.

Warehouse 13 Producer Teases Show Inspiration, Mythology

Hoping to fill the science-fiction void left by Battlestar Galactica's conclusion, Warehouse 13 premieres on July 7.

In a recent conference call with reporters, producers Jack Kennedy and David Simkins spoke on various aspects of the show...

Kennedy, on combining the stars with their characters: One of the things is we brought [the stars] Saul [Rubinek], Jo [Kelly] and Eddie [McClintock] into the writers' room, all sat together, and we had a session. And we talked about the characters. We talked about them personally: What do they like? What do they do? What are their hobbies? Do any of them speak languages or play instruments? You know, what are their relationships with family members and things, so that we could mine who they were as individuals.

Because my approach has always been that every show I've ever done is a family show, whether it's a workplace comedy or an actual family show, and so in building this family of this brother, sister and father team that we've got going, we wanted to sort of bring who they were to the roles.

Warehouse 13 Cast

Simkins, on inspirations for the show: I wouldn't say so much inspiration as opposed to just touching upon cultural and dramatic touchstones. Jack and I, in going back and sitting with the characters, and with the characters in the writers' room, we talk a lot about the Thin Man series, Myrna Loy, William Powell, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

Simkins, on the series mythology: I don't want the idea of this 13th warehouse to feel like I'm going to need a history book to enjoy the show. These are colors that we're layering in onto the series just to give it a sense of reality and a sense of depth should someone go looking for that depth.

But, for the most part, you can come to it—I hope you don't—but you can come to it in episode three or four or seven and still really have a great ride. You won't have missed much, if anything. There's a couple of B plot runners that we're running through the series, but for the most part, when you tune in, and there's Pete and Myka and they're going off on a mission, you'll get it. It's pretty accessible.

Warehouse 13 Spoilers: Meet the Characters!

As one of the summer's most anticipated new shows, Warehouse 13 premieres on July 7.

The Sci-Fi network is using this X-Files-like drama to anchor its brand switch, as the channel premieres a new name on that same date: Sy Fy.

We have no idea if the re-branding will be a success, but the show looks promising.

It stars Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly and Saul Rubinek in the three main roles; as the first two actors portray Secret Service Agents assigned to Warehouse 13, a mysterious storage facility in South Dakota. Rubinek's character is in charge of it.

Warehouse 13 Spoilers: Battlestar Galactica Guest Stars

On July 7, the Sci-Fi Channel is rebranding itself as the Sy Fy Channel. It's a significant change, we know.

The network hopes that its new science fiction series - a combination of The X-Files and Fringe - serves as an anchor for this new persona, as Warehouse 13 airs its two-hour pilot on the same date.

The show focuses on a pair of Secret Service agents that receive a new assignment: protection of a warehouse in South Dakota. It houses supernatural objects, as the two agents must also investigate reports of new, eerie developments.
