1.
A Talented and Diverse Cast
The Rookie has one of the most talented and diverse casts on TV. These actors bring the goods every, single week and there's not one of them we feel we could do without. There aren't many shows we can say that about.
2.
Great Guest Stars
There have been so many phenomenal guest stars during The Rookie season 1 that we couldn't possibly name them all!
Will-I-Am and Mario Lopez have made cameos, while Robbie Kay (Once Upon a Time) as a rookie attorney, Sean Maher (Firefly) as a violent, escaped convict, and Shawn Christian (Days of Our Lives) as a veteran cop gone bad were just a few of our favorites.
We're clamoring to find out who season 2 will bring to our screens.
3.
It's Not Afraid To Put Main Characters At Risk
And break our hearts in the process. Losing Captain Zoe Anderson was heartbreaking but no one can say she didn't go at as the complete badass we'd grown to love. Having the nerve to kill off our beloved Captain in season 1 says that no character is ever safe, just like in real life.
4.
Heart Pounding Action
For those who crave heart-pounding action in their cop shows, The Rookie delivers it in spades. The gun battles and chase scenes in season 1 were epic and we can't wait to see what they come up with for season 2.
5.
The Twist
Unlike other police shows featuring rookies, this one has a twist. John Nolan may be new to the job but he's not some 20-something in it for the adrenaline rush. His life experience gives him perspective the others don't have, but also allows him to make completely different mistakes from his peers which makes the storylines more interesting.
6.
Heroes You Can Root For
Some TV shows have main characters that are so complex that they border on unlikable. The core characters on The Rookie are the people you hope and pray will respond to your call if you need to call 9-1-1, specifically John Nolan who is honest, brave, and thoughtful.
7.
The Rookie Delivers the Drama...
The Rookie knows how to deliver on the drama, whether it's police officers in danger, their jobs on the line, or them chasing down criminals or coming to the rescue of victims, the emotional tension is always there.
8.
...But Knows When to Lighten Up
Just like in real life, sometimes you need a break and The Rookie knows when to inject a little humor, whether it be a sarcastic quip from Lopez, a criminal making a comic mistake, or the rookies poking fun at one another.
9.
It's Based in Los Angeles
In a world where shows that are filmed in L.A. pretend to be in New York and Vancouver is the frequent faux-background of L.A., it's fantastic to see a TV show use it's Los Angeles, California location to such advantage. Between the cool architecture, Hollywood backdrop, and gorgeous beaches, we can't get enough.
10.
Realistic Partnerships and Fun Friendships
Whether it's how the working relationships between the rookies and their training officers have grown throughout the season, or the friendships that have formed, there isn't a single pairing that we haven't enjoyed. It would be depressing to think we'd never get to see these friends and colleagues together again.
11.
And a Bit of Romance...
Everyone is allowed to have a personal life and, although The Rookie doesn't let it monopolize their officers' lives, it doesn't ignore it either. Angela and Wesley's banter is great fun, Bradford and Isabel were heartbreaking, Jackson and Gino are adorable, and fans are still debating if Nolan and Jessica have a future or if he's better off with Lucy.
12.
The Cop's Perspective
This is the show that takes the time to see things from a rookie cop's perspective, which can run the gamut from humorous and frustrating to overwhelming, like when Nolan shot and killed an armed suspect who wouldn't back down. Seeing Nolan's devastated expression as he viewed his body-cam footage said it all.
13.
That Cliffhanger!
I can't imagine they'd kill off two main characters in the first season, but we've got to know if Tim Bradford passed out due to dehydration, side effects from the untested vaccine, or if he's been infected with hemorrhagic fever, so there has to be a season 2!
