The Walking Dead Season 6 Report Card

at .  Updated at .

Wow, there were a fair share of ups and downs on The Walking Dead Season 6. But doesn’t that seem to happen every season?

The show got off to a pulse-pounding start with Rick’s botched plan to lead the walkers and then the Wolves assault on Alexandria. The threat of Negan became ever present. Plus, the world even opened up to reveal that far more was going on outside of Alexandria.

But who could forget Glenn and his magic dumpster or that frustrating cliffhanger in the season finale? What about Carol’s breakdown or Rick’s new relationship with Michonne?

There’s plenty to talk about, good and bad, when it comes to The Walking Dead Season 6. Let’s run it down in the latest TV Fanatic Report Card.

1. Best Episode

The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 9 was packed with goodness. Name dropping Negan, Daryl using a rocket launcher, and the shocker of Carl losing an eye were all memorable moments. But the hour really closed the door on a chapter of Alexandria while looking to the future of a new world. Alexandria and Rick’s crew really came together as a unit, and yes, there was plenty of walker action, too. It was intense and a satisfying way to return to The Walking Dead Season 6 after the hiatus. It certainly restored my excitement for what was to come.

2. Worst Episode

I’ve got to pick The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 7 as it not only revealed that Glenn’s death was a lame fake-out that simply jerked viewers around on his fate, but it was overall a boring episode. Hanging out with mopey Enid? Training Ron to shoot a gun? Oh, and Spencer tried a stupid hire-wire act that was reminiscent of Glenn getting in the well in The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 4. The episode was simply a poor reveal followed by characters trying to fill time until the midseason finale.

3. Best Character

We all have our favorites from the core cast, but it was great to see a new character immediately prove to be exciting and interesting. Jesus was memorable right away in The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 10. He was a compelling character with a personality, and he was just mysterious enough that you weren’t sure if he was a good guy or bad guy. He also has humor, can wear a coat in the sweltering heat and introduced us and Alexandria to a larger world. We only saw him for a little bit of time, but I can’t wait to see more from Jesus next season.

4. Worst Character

Ron and his teen angst really became grating. The love triangle with Enid was just time wasting, and the fights with Carl were laughable. Plus, his last act before getting killed was trying to kill Carl. Even the crazy Wolf did something redeemable in helping Denise before he died. Sorry, Ron, not going to miss you.

5. Best New Couple

I do think it's a little lame that Rick didn't get any time to build up his budding relationship with Jessie, but I'm all for some Rick and Michonne. These two are a power couple. I'm intrigued to see how their relationship goes now that they are more than just surviving buddies. Though, with Rick's recent track record, let's hope that Michonne doesn't get put on the chopping block either. #Richonne

6. Worst Twist

Nicholas shooting himself in front of Glenn and then the two toppling over into the pit of walkers for certain death was jaw dropping. Just seeing Glenn scream out as walkers pulled out guts was graphic, heartbreaking and stunning. It's just too bad that the whole moment was undercut by the fake-out and poor choice from the writers to drag out the "did he die" question for multiple episodes. It went from a ballsy and shocking moment that was filled with tragedy to ridiculous and shocking that the writers even decided to try and pull it off in the first place. Ugh.

7. Most Shocking Death

If the Glenn death had stuck, that definitely would have won. However, Denise's death came when I least expected it. Everything was going fine and then, BAM, no more Denise. We had finally got to see her trying to help out and take some control of her life, and a sudden arrow to the eye ended all that. She wasn't as lucky as Carl, that's for sure. I was really starting to like Denise and appreciated the show fleshing out her character. Maybe I should have seen it coming, but it was such a shock when it happened, and I was bummed she wasn't going to be going back to Alexandria. It's a death that definitely stands out for the season.

8. Biggest Letdown

This had to be the cliffhanger on The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 16. There was so much hype for the season finale, and then it wasted most of its time. After all the buildup, there was no payoff. Instead, we got a cop out that just reminded me of the writers pulling the fake-out with Glenn. You could still have a cliffhanger and show who Negan smashed with his bat. Everyone could even debate if that person chosen by Negan was dead or what the heck Rick and his crew would do to get away or what’s next during the hiatus. I’m surprised by the choice not to reveal the death, and as the last thing of The Walking Dead Season 6, it left me frustrated and let down.

9. Best Villain

Say what you will about The Walking Dead Season 6 finale and that cliffhanger, but Negan's introduction was chilling and captivating. His presence was all over the latter episodes of the season, and when he finally showed up, it was obvious this guy was a scary menace... even if he seemed a bit charming. Sure, he wasn't around for long, but he immediately showed how much Rick and his crew should be worried. And that bat? This is a bad guy worth remembering and has me excited for more.

10. Standout Performance

It's still crazy to think that the Carol of The Walking Dead Season 6 was ever the meek and mild Carol of The Walking Dead Season 1. And Melissa McBride has continued to deliver fantastic performances as her character has grown and changed over the seasons. While I prefer the bad ass Carol that's taken care of business, I love what McBride has brought to Carol as the character struggles with her morals, with killing, and with her new life in the new world. That scene where she mows down the Saviors while crying? Powerful stuff. McBride delivers and it's such a pleasure to get to watch her act in either the emotional or action-packed situations.

11. Hopes for Season 7

No more fake-out deaths, please. And while I love the human vs. human aspect, it’d be great for the walkers be more of a threat than just a nuisance. Let’s fear the walkers again. I’m also hoping the world continues to expand as we explore other communities. Let’s get some more Jesus and whoever those guys are that Morgan and Carol met. A variety of new characters would be great, and not just ones there so they can get killed off. I’m also hoping that Negan remains as scary and evil as he was in his introduction. Let’s not water him down. I can’t wait to see more from him, and I’m looking forward to an intense confrontation over the new episodes. There’s plenty of directions and possibilities the show could explore overall, and I’m hoping that The Walking Dead Season 7 gets to reset on the path, really explore its characters in this new world (not just the leads) and deliver stories worth caring about. Let’s make it more than just about who is going to die next. I know The Walking Dead is capable of delivering quality episodes, and I’m hoping it can prove itself when it returns.
