Dexter Review: "Road Kill"

The main plot of this week's Dexter episode appeared to mirror the issue the show is currently having.

Dexter went from trying to kill Trinity to actually saving his life, as Arthur was prepared to commit suicide until his friend/enemy made a last-second save. You can read all about these developments and more in our most recent episode guide.

The same back-and-forth seems to be going on with the series itself. It's not sure where it wants to go with the Dexter/Trinity relationship.

For the majority of "Road Kill," Dexter was stuck on the issue of remorse. Did he feel badly or not after killing an innocent last week? The answer, via Dexter's internal monologue, appeared to be no, but his reaction after learning of his mistake was a resounding yes.

The most intriguing aspect of this season's storyline is how Dexter tries to forecast his own future via Arthur's life. After Trinity tried to kill himself, Dexter wondered: if this how I'll eventually go, following years of pent up sorrow and regret?

A Kill Room

While Dexter's questioning of his own humanity is an interesting dilemma, any relationship not involving the main character is a snooze. Does anyone care about Angel and Laguerta? Is Rita really gonna cheat with her neighbor?

It all feels like filler meant to give Michael C. Hall a break from being in every single scene.

Overall, a mediocre episode. The action needs to pick up, as this week's installment simply felt like a look inside Dexter's head. That's a scary place, but not as scary as kill room that actually gets used.

Check out a few of our favorite Dexter quotes from the hour below:

Trinity: Confession is good for the soul.
Dexter: All the more proof I have no soul. | permalink
Deb: I love you, bro, but sometimes you're a f**king 'tard. | permalink
Dexter: I really do need to stab something. | permalink
Vince: I've almost banged so much tail at those geek fests. | permalink

Dexter Review: "Slack Tide"

Stop us if you've heard this before:

As Dexter befriends a like-minded individual, his co-worker's suspicion causes him to follow Dexter around at night, while Dexter accidentally kills an innocent man.

All three of these storylines were in play this week - and all three have been done before on the show. Read through our recap of "Slack Tide" for the specifics.

Due to Michael C. Hall's performance, among other aspects of the Showtime hit, it's always a pleasure to watch Dexter. But never have we felt so much television deja vu as last night.

Dexter and Trinity

Quinn stalked our favorite mass murderer, just as Doakes did in season two; Dexter continues to play a dangerous game of befriending Trinity, against Harry's wishes, the same scenario that played out last season with Jimmy Smits' Miguel Prago.

Meanwhile, the supposedly shocking conclusion that found Dexter distraught over killing an innocent would have been more effective if he hadn't done the same thing to Miguel's brother last year.

There were different circumstances then, as Oscar Prado was not a target that ended up on Dexter's table. But the guilt and confusion on Dexter's part was very similar.

Unlike his victims, we don't wanna see Dexter die a slow, painful death, taunting the audience with all it used to be. It's one of our favorites dramas ever and there's still a lot of time for it to recover and feel fresh as season four twists and turns.

But this week's episode, like Dexter chopping up Farrow's body, was a step in the wrong direction. Check out our favorite quotes from the installment below:

Dexter: We all have secrets, Deb. Some of them shouldn't be found out. | permalink
Dexter: Two serial killers go for a ride. Why do I get the feeling this joke ends with only one of them coming back? | permalink
Dexter: Dear Abby, I'm a serial killer and I need advice on how to keep my kids from taking over my life. | permalink
Deb: Take a bullet and suddenly you're everyone's best friend. | permalink

Dexter Review: "If I Had a Hammer"

Dexter, meet Trinity. Trinity, Kyle Butler.

Our favorite serial killer befriended Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer) this week, disguising himself as a guy named Kyle whose wife recently left him. For a full recap of "If I Had a Hammer," follow our link now.

Dexter vs. Trinity

Similar to last season with Jimmy Smits and Michael C. Hall, we could watch Hall and John Lithgow interact for hours. We can't wait to actually do so as season four unfolds, but this is the one drawback to the show:

There's only so many angles Dexter can take. Each season, he gets close to someone similar to himself, only to end up taking this individual's life in the most entertaining, gory ritual on television.

Don't get us wrong, there are much worse formulas on TV than hire a well-respected guest star; make him creepy; introduce him to Dexter; watch the intriguing cat-and-mouse game that follows; rinse; repeat.

And this season might be headed for something new, as Jennifer Carpenter claims the finale will change everything. But we hope the show doesn't overstay its welcome. It's currently one of our favorites hours on television and it would be sad to see it grow stale.

What did you think of this episode? Review a few Dexter quotes from it below as you answer...

Trinity: This is my home. I can be myself here.
Dexter: You make it sound so easy. | permalink
Rita: A bread maker?
Dexter: We're always running out of bread.
Rita: We're always running out of milk, too. Did you get me a cow, too? | permalink
Rita: When he does talk to me, it's all lies, all the time.
Dexter: Not... all the time. | permalink
Dexter: Camouflage is nature's craftiest trick. | permalink

Dexter Review: "Dex Takes a Holiday"

Wasn't it great to see the old, dark Dexter back on this week's new episode?

While the family dynamic has been interesting and humorous at times this season, it's grown stale. We get it. Dexter needs literal time to kill, and he can't get it with Rita and the kids in town.

That changed this week, and the prey our favorite mass murderer chose to pursue made for a fascinating game of cat and mouse. Granted, the show - via visions of Harry - hit viewers over the head a bit too hard with the comparison between the woman that killed her family and Dexter, but Michael C. Hall knocked it out of the park during his kill scene, when he realized that he did care about Rita and the children.

A Female Victim

Meanwhile, sorry Lundy, but it was also nice to see you go. The Trinity Killer storyline needs to take front and center of the season now, as every scene with John Lithgow can only be described as "chilling."

We're sure he'll end up as the culprit, but would anyone be shocked if the show tried to hint at Anton as the shooter over the next few weeks? Neither would we.

Overall, we understand Dexter must evolve from season to season, but we hope the series doesn't ignore his Dark Passenger for this long again. It's one thing to hear him wax poetic about it with Harry.

It's another to watch it rise to the surface, as it did this week. Here's to hoping the show maintains a better balance/struggle between Dex the husband/father and Dex the serial killer going forward.

In closing, check out a few of our favorite Dexter quotes from the week:

Zoe: Are you the kind of sicko that likes watching a woman in pain?
Dexter: I'm not that kind of sicko, no. | permalink
Angel: I'm having intimate relations with Laguerta.
Dexter: Congratultions? | permalink
Harry: Why do you think Trinity has been so successful? He doesn't have a family.
Dexter: Well, I do.
Harry: Miss them yet? | permalink
Quinn: I know. My d**k's been making some bad decisions. | permalink

Dexter Recap: "Remains to Be Seen"

Forget the body Dexter lost during this week's new episode.

Our favorite serial killer is mighty close to losing his mind.

While the overall plot wasn't advanced too much throughout "Remains to Be Seen," Dexter viewers got an idea of the crazy state of affairs that now comprises Dexter's life. A new baby. A new murderer in town. A Dark Passenger to feed.

Read a detailed episode recap now and let us know what you think will happen next.

Scene of His Crime

As always, we've listed a few of the top Dexter quotes from the evening:

Harry: You're juggling family, work and a Dark Passenger that's always got one hand on the steering wheel. | permalink
Harry: You've got a family to support, and people to dismember. You're spinning too many plates, Dexter | permalink
Dexter: I already have a killer to clean up after: me. | permalink
Dexter: If they find Benny is my car, it's lethal injection time. | permalink

Dexter Recap: "Living the Dream"

Wanna know a secret? Daddy kills people.
- Dexter

New daddy Dexter wants to kill people, at least, but on the fourth season premiere of this Showtime hit, we see how difficult that is with a new son at home.

We also meet a naked John Lithgow, who proves to be a creepy serial killer, one Frank Lundy has returned to hunt down. What sort of problems will this cause for Deb and Dexter down the line?

We'll soon find out. For now, read through our full recap of "Living the Dream" and let us know your thoughts on this show's return.

Rita and Harrison

Here's a look at a few of our favorite Dexter quotes from the hour:

Dexter: The perfect husband would have gotten rid of his old apartment. But I kill people. Not exactly the perfect husband. | permalink
Dexter: My dark passenger is like a trapped coal miner, always tapping; always letting me know it's in there, still alive. | permalink
Vince: The coroner can suck my uncircumcised d**k if he doesn't rule this a homicide.
Vince: Way TMI, Masuka. | permalink
Rita: Car pools and swimming pools? How much are we living the dream?
Dexter: So much. | permalink
Rita: Baby is down. Know what that means?
Dexter: Sleep.
Rita: Sex. | permalink
