Joshua Jackson Interview: Fringe Episodes to Focus on Various Characters, Backstories

The ratings might be suffering, but the quality of Fringe has never been better.

As fans remain glued to their screens each week, Joshua Jackson sat down with TV.com and previewed what's to come on this Fox drama. He doesn't give away any key spoilers, but he does say...

... future episode will focus on various characters: "The next sequence of episodes reveals big things about the characters they focus on. There Broyles' episode, there's a Walter episode, and there's an observer episode. And they serve to give you insight into the backstory of each of of these characters."

Walter and Peter Picture

... realities will collide, subtly: "I think it'll be much more cloak-and-dagger, and not some fleet lands on our shores. I definitely think the show is headed in that direction, and that confrontation is the whole purpose behind the show. But I don't think [Fringe] is ever going to be Battlestar Galactica, no full-fledged infantry and shock troops war. Most of it will happen in the back alleys."

Lance Reddick Readies Fringe Fans for Collision of Realities

A battle has been brewing on Fringe all season long.

It's more than just good vs. evil. It's "over here" vs. "over there," as alternative realities will eventually collide. What will happen then? Let's find out from Lance Reddick, who plays Broyles and who spoke to TV Guide this week.

Broyles

A few excerpts from the interview:

When will the realities meet? The truth is, I don't really know what it's going to look like. I can say that we're going to see more of the Observer and find out more about him or them. The episode with Charlie was a great precursor to what's going to come.

When will William Bell next appear? I would imagine that as we get closer and closer to the conflict and once we really get into it, he will be an integral part of that story line.

How does one decipher between good and evil? That's a good question, even with Walter. When you look at some of the things we know he's done in the past. I feel like one of the things this show deals with is looking at good and evil existentially, like whose point of view. We're going to be looking at that when the conflict comes. There's an episode we're about to start shooting that deals with that.

In other words: Reddick is privy to as many Fringe spoilers as the average fan. Thanks for nothing, Lance!

Fringe: Not in Danger... Yet

The move to the most competitive night on television hasn't been a success for Fringe.

Ratings for the drama have plummeted as it's gone up against CSI and Grey's Anatomy. But as fans almost all agree, the show has never been better creatively.

Therefore, it's comforting to hear that the series doesn't appear to be in danger of cancellation, not yet at least.

“The mood on set and in the writer’s room is as good as the ratings are bad, which is to say, wonderful,” J.J. Abrams told Entertainment Weekly. “Luckily, Fox has been insanely supportive, for which we are deeply grateful.”

Family Bonding

Abrams added that he's encouraged by the show’s “strong” DVR figures.

“Given that we’re on one of the hardest [nights] on television, we’re just focusing on making the best show we possibly can," he said. "What else can we do?”

The End of William Bell on Fringe?

Just a couple weeks after his latest appearance as William Bell on Fringe, Leonard Nimoy has bad news for fans:

He might never return to the show.

"I've done three appearances for them. I don't know if I will do a fourth," the actor told The Los Angeles Times this week.

Nimoy's Bell most recently appeared in "Momentum Deferred" an episode that revolved around Olivia's return to her alternative reality.

"They've asked me to do more, but we have to talk about where the character is going," Nimoy said. "So far my character and my appearances have been used to lay in information about this alternate universe and the experience of being in this other world. And that's OK, but I don't know yet what plans they have for really developing a dramatic story for the character. I'm waiting for a conversation about that."

Whether or not he appears on screen again, the star has nothing but praise for the show.

"They do a great production job. They have great story hooks, terrific production values and very interesting performances."

Fringe Question of the Week: Where is Agent Jessup?

Prior to this season of Fringe, it was announced that Meghan Markle would be joining the cast.

But the actress' character of Special Agent Jessup has only been seen briefly and many fans are wondering what her status is. Entertainment Weekly turned to producer Jeff Pinkner for the answer. He said:

“There was never any length of time [assigned to her stay]. There’s no end date. She’s an available tool in our toolbox and we’ll use her as we see fit.

[But] we’re really trying to tell stories about our main characters… we want to get deeper with them, so we don’t have a lot of time to go into the FBI. I think our fans really want to get to know our [core] characters more and that’s what we’re endeavoring to do this year.”

Fringe Producers Peer Ahead, Answer Questions

Considering that Fringe is based around alternative realities, it's safe to assume viewers crave answers about a number of topics and developments.

With that in mind, TV Guide went straight to the souces: producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman. The pair dished on a number of show-related topics this week, from the other Walter to multiple Observers.

Enjoy these excerpts...

On interactions between "over there" Walter and William Bell: "Over there Walter may have never worked with William Bell. He might have gone to medical school instead of being a scientist. But it's very possible that over there Walter is working with over there William Bell -- and in the same field." - Pinkner

Back to (Alternate) Reality

On meeting Peter's mom: "You're definitely going to get answers about Peter's mother this season. That element will be very illuminating and also a fantastic journey for Peter." - Wyman

On two versions of the same person meeting: "They might not like each other. But it's not like one of them has to explode. This isn't a time-travel show. There are no philosophical or physical conundrums with two people meeting. Somebody has come from their house to visit somebody at their house. And they just happen to be the same person." - Pinkner

On the Observers: "We're going to learn a lot more about them. People are fascinated by them. There will be a lot of answers about the Observers this season." - Wyman

On next week's Fringe episode, viewers will learn a lot more about Broyles and his family. We'll review it in full after it airs.

Leonard Nimoy Speaks on William Bell

On tonight's major new episode of Fringe, Olivia travels back to her alternate reality and meets, once again, with William Bell.

The mysterious character is played perfectly by Leonard Nimoy, who described Bell as "brilliant, wealthy and very powerful" in an interview with Reuters this week.

But is he good or evil?

"Time will tell," the actor said, adding: "The character was somewhat a blank slate and therefore attractive because there is an opportunity to build an interesting and unpredictable character."

Overall, Nimoy is simply thrilled that Fringe wanted him at all.

"I am very flattered that people are still finding me useful," he said. "I still feel strong and healthy and active, and as long as there is interesting work to do, I'll probably keep on doing it."

We'll post a detailed recap of "Momentum Deferred" soon after it airs tonight. For now, check out this preview of events and photos from the episode.

Lance Reddick Teases: More Observer Action Ahead!

As previous Fringe spoilers have revealed, multiple Observers are on the way.

In a recent interview with E! News, series star Lance Reddick previewed this, and one other, storyline on the way. He said:

"We've got a real page-turner of an episode coming up that's all about the Observers. And there's a whole episode about Broyles revisiting a case, a killer, that's the one that got away for Broyles. That episode introduces my ex-wife (Karen Holness) and talks about why we got divorced, and what my relationship with Fringe Division was in the past, versus what it is now."

Broyles

This week's episode of Fringe is a major one: it will showcase Olivia's return trip to the alternate reality she visited in May.

The Observer: Who is she? Why did you save her?
August: I saw her many years ago. She was a child. Her parents had just been killed. She was crying. But she... she was brave. She crossed my mind... somehow. She never left it. I think... it's what they call... feelings. I think... I love her.
