Damon Lindelof Answers Fan Questions, Previews Final Season of Lost

It's both sad and exciting: we're just a couple months away from the final season of Lost.

Who will live? Who will survive? Did May's atomic bomb explosion reset life for the castaways? Countless questions keep many viewers of the show up at night, but Damon Lindelof is here to answer a few.

The final Season

The producer replied to a number of USA Today reader inquiries this week. While he didn't reveal any major spoilers, Lindelof shed some light on a few major topics. For instance...

The season six poster is chock full of meaning: "Everything in the design of that poster is intentional. We oversaw it - now we know the audience looks at that stuff so closely, so we don't want there to be anything that we don't approve, especially at this point in the game."

Yes, Walt is unique: "We said he has this special ability, and the Others obviously grabbed him and studied him for awhile, then they got freaked out by him and decided to let him go... hopefully, why Walt was special and the role he played on the show will have a new significance when all is said and done. I'm not sure we really need the character of Walt to explain the significance."

Lost Stars Reveal Season Six Spoilers

Soon after winning an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Benjamin Linus on Lost, Michael Emerson was asked by TV Guide whether or not fans will be satisfied with the show's finale next May.

"I don't know if they'll be fully satisfied or not," he replied. "I don't know if we want to be fully satisfied. I think it's always best to go away wanting a little more."

Lost Season Six Poster

Speaking of a little more, Emerson's co-star Jorge Garcia has revealed a trio of spoilers regarding the final season of this ground-breaking series. They are:

  • The bomb DID explode: "Basically a bomb went off at the end of the last one and all bets are off," Garcia said. He didn't elaborate as to the consequences of this major event.
  • Juliet will return. An insider says Elizabeth Mitchell recently flew back from shooting scenes in Hawaii; she may return again this fall.
  • Viewers have seen the last of Libby. "It looks like we're probably not going to see Libby," Garcia said. "They'll probably deal with the story, but [actress Cynthia Watros, who plays Libby] may not be joining us."

Boone to Appear on "Several Episodes" of Lost, Ian Somerhalder Confirms

Ian Somerhalder is a busy actor.

Well into the filming for the first season of The Vampire Diaries, the actor took a break this week to fly to Hawaii and reprise his role as Boone on Lost.

Asked about his character's future on the ABC hit, Somerhalder told Entertainment Weekly:

“The only thing I can say is that I’m going back for several episodes... I have a script that weighs like 200 pounds, but I don’t really know what’s happening.”

Damon Salvatore Pic

The actor added that he was excited to play a part on Lost's final season, but the schedule is far from relaxing.

"I wrapped [an episode of The Vampire Diaries] last night, I’ll fly there, I’ll work tomorrow, and then I’ll fly straight back and then come straight back to work on The Vampire Diaries. So it’s a 10-hour flight each way, and I’ll be on the ground for 24 hours... But I wouldn’t complain if you paid me.”

Revealed: Lost Season Six Premiere Title

Sadly, we're still months away from the season six premiere of Lost.

But it's never too early to speculate on rumors, spoilers - and episode titles!

As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, the title of the first episode of Lost's final season will "LA X."

The Meeting

What could this mean? There are many theories:

  • LAX is the airport code for Los Angeles International Airport. It might simply be featured in the premiere;
  • A hydrogen bomb was exploded to conclude season five. Might it have wiped out Los Angeles?
  • "X" is the roman numeral for 10. Could the premiere simply pick up, in Los Angeles, in the present day (2010)?

We have awhile before we know for sure. But send in your best guesses today!

Mr. Eko Might Return to Lost

Charlie. Claire. Boone. Faraday.

A handful of characters will return for the sixth and final season of Lost. But there's one name we never expected to find on that list: Mr. Eko.

After all, reports from season two of the show indicated that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje pretty much voted himself off the island back in the day.

But in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said "fans of Eko should have hope [for a return."

Mr. Eko

He said he “loved playing that character,” adding:

“I’m here for them. Adewale is open for business. We have had talks about some things they might do for the final season and there are other dead folks coming back allegedly, but at the moment it is still a maybe. A strong maybe, but I have not shot anything yet or signed any contracts. But I’m hoping.”

Our best guess: keep hoping, Adewale. It's hard to envision a scenario in which Eko returns to Lost.

Charlie: Officially Returning to Lost

It's no secret that Lost is bringing back a number of characters for its final season.

It's also been announced that Dominic Monaghan will be a series regular on ABC's FlashForward this fall.

So, does this mean that his Lost character of Charlie is not included among the returning individuals? No. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Dominic Monaghan as Charlie

Sources have confirmed to E! News that Charlie Pace will, indeed, appear on season six of everyone's favorite island-based drama. He'll return for three episodes.

Does this mean Charlie is alive? A ghost? You'll need to tune in and find out.

Returning to Lost: Juliet, Angry Sawyer

The sixth and final season of Lost may center around an entirely new timeline, but it will also return to its past in at least a couple of ways.

First, Elizabeth Mitchell has confirmed that she'll reprise her role as Juliet, despite the fact that her character was inches away from an exploded hydrogen bomb in May's finale and despite the fact that the actress is starring in a new series, V.

"[I'll appear] pretty immediately, and then I'm not sure after that," Mitchell told E! News this week about Juliet's role next year. "I think it will be satisfactory."

Juliet and Sawyer

Meanwhile, Josh Holloway says his character's state of mind, following the events of the season five finale, will hearken back to the former, bitter Sawyer.

"I think he's pretty destroyed. All of that growth got ripped away. I think he's gonna be a bit salty again, which I'm looking forward to. All I know is that he's destroyed and has given up on life again and on having any positive lessons. So watch out!"

We surely will. Lost returns to the air in January 2010.

Lost Season Six Spoilers, Scoop from Comic-Con Panel

As expected, the Lost panel was as popular as any other show or movie at last week's Comic-Con festival in San Diego.

The cast and crew members in attendance didn't disappoint, either, offering up key clues and hints about what's to come on season six. Let's get right to it!

  • Juliet and Faraday will play roles  in season six.
  • There will be significant backstory on Richard Alpert; the actor that plays him, Nestor Carbonel (pictured)l, has been promoted to series regular.
  • Producer Carlton Cuse said the flashbacks in season six would take a "different approach."
  • Cast and crew guaranteed a season that will somewhat resemble season one, in terms of jungle adventure, emotional resonance, and a sense of discovery.
  • In response to a fan question about Jacob, producers said the character has never taken on the form of another person.

Richard Alpert

Meanwhile, as part of The Vampire Diaries panel, Ian Somerhalder stammered when asked about a return to Lost, but the following words did leave his lips:

I am going to be coming back.

Lost Interview: The Man in Black Speaks Out

He appeared on screen for a total of one minute and 45 seconds.

But Titus Welliver made a lasting impression on Lost fans during May's fifth season finale.

The actor waxed poetic on the condition of human beings ("They come. Fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same."), inhabited John Locke's body and killed Jacob.

The Man in Black

Now, in an interview with TV Guide, Welliver speaks on his unnamed character. Here are a few excerpts:

On his character's lack of a name: "He has no name. He's just "the man," because they don't want to give anything away. I know that this character has a name and I know the importance of it; that's all that I know"

On good vs. evil on Lost: "The way that I interpreted it, on a biblical level, is that it's a sort of Cain-and-Abel scenario. So by destroying Jacob, what does that prove — that [the man in black] can ultimately have power over the island? Do the castaways become solely his playthings? And why was it so important that he find the loophole to be able to kill Jacob? That moved me in the direction of thinking that if he needs this loophole, there's a greater power than the two of them that they're answering to."

Lost Producers on Season Six: Anything Goes!

What's coming up on season six of Lost? According to executive producer Cuse and Lindelof: anything!

The pair didn't reveal much whole giving a few interviews in England last week as part of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts festival.

But when asked about the possible re-appearance of characters such as Boone, Shannon and Charlie, Lindelof said they do hope to give certain individuals a"curtain call."

Of course, as Entertainment Weekly properly asks: How might Lost accomplish this creative feat, considered the deceased status of those characters?

Simply put, Lindelof said, when it comes to season six, "anything goes."
